RESEARCH ASSISTANT AWARDS MADE

Half-time research assistant awards for the coming academic year have been announced by Donna Schmitt.  Awards were made to Irene Ametrano for continuing research on counseling effectiveness and gender/role orientation;

To James Berry and Jackie Tracy to support systemic change in school districts; to Jane Goodman for research on the forthcoming Counseling Adults in Transition; to Nancy Halmhuber to study student attitudes, values, and perceptions as related to helping behavior among special education preservice teachers;

To William Hetrick to support research on the development of a team-building strategy for educational organizations; to Olga Nelson to study the beliefs and practices of teachers as related to literacy instruction and assessment;

To Christine Phelps to investigate student attrition among women and people of color; to Sandra McClennen to investigate the comparison of preschool children with disabilities in two different settings;

To Kenneth Schatz to study the written and auditory comprehension in learning disabled students; and to Lech Wisniewski to (a) identify technologies for students with special needs and (b) compile a manual for use by COE for grant proposal writing.

Proposals were reviewed by the COE Personnel Committee and, following review and approved by the dean, were awarded in the order determined by the Personnel Committee, up to the number of RA slots available at this time.

RUPERT RESIGNS

Terry Rupert has resigned his position in the HPERD department to accept a position at West Virginia Tech, where he will be Director of Athletics and Physical Education.

SKILLMAN FOUNDATION SELECTS EMU COE AS "PARTNER"

The Skillman Foundation of Detroit has announced the selection of the EMU College of Education as its "University Partner" for the implementation of the Foundation's "Schools and Families Initiative."  The Initiative is modeled on the work of James Comer at the Yale Child Study Center.

COE JOINS USA-SINO TEACHER EDUCATION CONSORTIUM

Based on a COE Council recommendation, the COE has joined (effective July 1) the USA-Sino Teacher Education Consortium.  Because of previously expressed interest in the work of the Consortium, Jerry Robbins has invited Leah Adams, George Barach, Trevor Gardner, Jane Goodman, Bill Hetrick, Robbie Johnson, Ariel Weymouth-Payne, Lech Wisniewski, and Suzanne Zelnik to serve as an informal advisory group concerning local participation in Consortium activities.

VOTE IN SCHOOL ELECTIONS ON MONDAY

COE SPONSORS GOLF TEAM FOR YES SCHOLARSHIP BENEFIT

The COE is sponsoring a golf team in the June 19 benefit for scholarships for members of the Young Educators Society (YES).  The event will be held at the Highland Hills course, near DeWitt.

Playing for the local team will be Andrew Carrigan, assistant golf coach; George Beaudette, Director of Alumni Relations; John Nordlinger of the Development Office; and student Shane Omar.

FACULTY NOTES

Sandra McClennen presented a pre-conference workshop on "Facilitated Communication: 'Hands-on' Takes on New Meaning" at the American Association on Mental Retardation convention.  During the convention she presented "Family Use Following Introduction of Facilitated Communication."

This week McClennen will present a day-long workshop on facilitated communication at Drake University in Des Moines, as part of a state-wide conference for general education teachers related to inclusion.

Suzanne Zelnik and dance students Kim Warner, Abby Dunbar, Patricia Cherney, Melissa Bykowski, and Kristin Roedel prepared dances and choreography for the Multicultural Fair at a local-area junior high school.

ALUMNI NOTES

COE Alum Sharon Johnson Ryles was recently named Willow Run Community Schools "Teacher of the Year."  Ryles teaches fifth grade at the Kettering School.

COE Alum Neil Van Riper recently retired as superintendent of the Trenton schools after 44 years in education, 42 of which were at Trenton.  In recent ceremonies the district's administration building was named for him.  Van Riper received an EMU "Distinguished Alum" award in 1989.

MILKEN FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES AWARDS FOR MICHIGAN EDUCATORS

The MI State Board of Education, in cooperation with the Milken Family Foundation, will recognize six Michigan educators with a cash award of $25,000 each and other aspects of support and recognition.  Nominations are due June 25.  Information and nomination forms are available in each department office and additional information is available from Gertrude Bonaparte at 517-335-0351.

This past year, two Michigan educators received this award, both of whom were EMU alums.

MIDDLE LEVEL DISSERTATION AWARD

NASSP has called for nominations (due October 1) for the Distinguished Middle Level Dissertation Award (dissertation completed between July 1, 1992 and June 30, 1993).  Information is available in Teacher Education and L&C.

Teaching Education has set August 1 as the deadline for receiving manuscripts on "Questioning the Primacy of Classroom Management and Discipline."  November 15 is the deadline for manuscripts on "Teaching on the Cutting Edge: Transforming Students & Ourselves, Schools & Societies."  Information is available from J. Proposals concerned with the mental health needs of school-age or preschool children are due to the Innovating Worthy Projects Foundation by September 1.  Contact Dorothy Spurlock in ORD for information.

A call for papers and proposals for the National Educational Computing Conference has been issued, with items due October 1.  Additional information is available through Internet: NECC94@BBN.COM.  NECC meets in Boston, June 13-15, 1994.

October 1 is the deadline for proposals to the Ittleson Foundation for mental health projects including minorities and AIDS.  The next deadline is April 1, 1994.  Contact Dorothy Spurlock in ORD for information.

ASCD announces its annual Outstanding Dissertation Awards program for 1993.  Dissertations in the fields of curriculum, instruction, and supervision that significantly advance the knowledge and understanding of educational theories, concepts, and practices are eligible.  Dissertations must have been completed between September 1, 1992 and August 31, 1993.  Nominations are due November 12.  Information is available in the Department of Teacher Education.

Applications may be submitted to the William T. Grant Foundation at any time for (a) research on the development of children, adolescents, and youths; (b) research to evaluate broadly-based social interventions; (c) the faculty scholars program (young investigators working with mental health of children and youth); (d) consortia programs across institutions and disciplines; and (e) small grants within the program interests of the foundation.  Contact Dorothy Spurlock in ORD for information.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation accepts proposals at any time for projects addressing severe chronic health and mental health conditions.  Contact Dorothy Spurlock in ORD for information.
