"BROWN BAG" LUNCH SET FOR JUNE 29

Mary Dean Barringer of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards will present at a "brown bag" lunch on June 29.

The session is scheduled for noon to 1:00 p.m. in Boone 107.  Beverages will be provided.  All professional education faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend and to bring a "brown bag" lunch.

A copy of an article about the work of the NBPTS is attached for background information.

BRETTING NAMED AS HPERD HEAD

Michael M. Bretting has been named as Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance effective July 1. Bretting will replace Patric Cavanaugh, who is retiring from the headship after some 25 years at EMU.

Bretting has served as chairman of the Department of Sport and Recreational Sciences at Barry University (FL) and as Chairman of the Department of Physical Education at Valparaiso University (IN).  In addition, he has taught at the University of Maryland and at East Carolina University (NC).

He holds the B.S. in physical education and health education from East Carolina University and the M.S. in physical education from the same institution.  His Ph.D. is from the University of Maryland in administration, curriculum, and supervision of physical education.

He holds a number of academic recognitions as well as athletic recognitions in swimming and racquetball.  He has coached aquatics, has published in such outlets as the Journal of Sport Management, and is a member of a number of professional organizations.

TENURE AWARDED TO ADDITIONAL THREE

In addition to COE tenure awards announced earlier, the Board of Regents, at its recent meeting, awarded tenure to Michael Bretting, James Riley, and Jerry Robbins.

PROMOTIONS GO TO THREE IN COE

Promotion to the rank of full professor was recently approved and announced for Ronald Hoodin, Steve Moyer, and Valerie Polakow.

Each was recommended for this rank by the respective departmental personnel committee, the respective department head, the dean, the provost, and approved by the president.

Hoodin, Moyer, and Polakow are in the departments of Special Education, HPERD, and Teacher Education, respectively.

SIX TO JOIN COE FACULTY IN FALL

Two African-American men and four white women will be joining the COE faculty this fall.  New hires in Leadership and Counseling include Beverly Geltner, John Gooden, and Don Hackman.  Joan Eckerson will be joining the HPERD faculty.  Mimi Salamat will be joining the faculty in Special Education, and Bruce Crawford will become a member of the Teacher Education faculty.

BUCH NAMED TO GRADUATE FACULTY

Esther Rosalind Buch, director of the EMU Children's Center, has been named as a provisional part-time graduate faculty member by Ronald Goldenberg, dean of the Graduate School.

ALUMNI NEWS

Hayes Jones, teacher education alum and 1960 Olympics bronze winner in the 110 high hurdles, recently ran for mayor of Pontiac.

NICE RECEIVES GRANT AWARDS

The National Institute for Consumer Education (NICE) recently received an award of $34,705 from the National Coalition for Consumer Education to continue the services of the national credit education clearinghouse. 

NICE also received an award of $10,565 from a coalition of sponsors to conduct workshops on "Consumer Approach to Investing" in Colorado, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C.

Rosella Bannister is the project administrator for both activities.

OPPORTUNITIES

Some opportunities for faculty:

The MSU COE announces a conference on Aging and Learning on July 29 in East Lansing.  For information, call 517-355-2395.

The American Association of School Administrators will sponsor a "conference within a conference" on professor-practitioner school-based research.  Proposals must be received by September 8.  For information, contact Michael Martin at 303-556-4857.

Contact Dorothy Spurlock in ORD for information on requests for proposals (RFP's) for "ethnic minority families with retarded members," "exploratory/developmental grants for psychosocial treatment research," "child and adolescent development and psychopathology research centers," and "aging and mental health."  Deadlines are July 21, October 1, October 1, and December 1, respectively.

Contact Michelle Barnes in ORD for information on RFP's for "college student exchange," "personnel training for children with disabilities," and "drug elimination."  Deadlines are September 15, varies by program starting with September 17, and no specified deadline, respectively.
