FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
International Perspectives on Homelessness, co-edited by Valerie Polakow and C. Guillean, will be officially released Wednesday by Greenwood Press. This is Polakow's fourth book to be published this year, the others including Tab Af Rettigheder, The Public Assault on America's Children, and Diminished Rights.
Jerry Robbins has been elected vice-chair of The Renaissance Group.
Lizbeth Stevens, in her capacity as vice president for public schools of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, recently presented a position statement to the Michigan State Board of Education concerning Public Act 387.
Peggy Moore-Hart recently completed the annual Writer's Camp for local-area elementary students, held this year in Estabrook Elementary School. The focus this year was on the Ann Arbor airport. A number of EMU persons were present for the closing ceremonies last Friday morning.
Nancy Dahl recently published poetry in the Gentle Reader from South Wales.
ON THE INTERNATIONAL FRONT
Papers by Jerry Robbins and Shirley Stennis-Williams (Southeastern Missouri State University) on the work of The Renaissance Group have been accepted for presentation at the World Council for Curriculum and Instruction (WCCI), to be held in September in Madrid, Spain.
Art Stellar, the executive of Ypsilanti's High/Scope Foundation, will be presenting at the same conference. Stellar is the North American vice
president for WCCI and invites COE faculty members who would like to become involved with the activities of the organization to contact him.
STUDENT NOTESCara Jasiolek, who has been, for the past several seasons, the featured twirler with the EMU Marching Band, is a prospective elementary teacher. She is scheduled to twirl with the Ypsilanti Community/Barnhill Concert Band, directed by Jerry Robbins, during the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival at 3:30 p.m. on August 18.
ALUMNI NOTESRon Collins '74, principal of Ann Arbor's Thurston Elementary, is one of 10 Michigan educators picked for a highly selective state program that aims to improve performance of lagging schools by bringing in specially trained professionals through the Partnership for Success program. Collins will spend a two-year assignment at Hampton Elementary School in Detroit.
William J. "Bill" Bushaw '79, '81 is now the "Chief Academic Officer," a new position, in the Michigan Department of Education. Bushaw will head efforts related to accreditation and accountability.
Louise Marshall, age 88, died recently in Detroit. She was one of the very early Black teachers in the Ypsilanti schools. She also taught in Mt. Clemens and was principal of Howe Elementary in Detroit.
George A. Moroz '37, age 86, of Detroit, died recently. He was a star athlete at "The Normal," later having a career as a special education teacher at the high school level in Detroit and Redford.
Charles H. Lane '48, age 77, died recently in Florida. For 20 years he was principal of Chelsea High School.
There will be an August 5, 2:00 p.m. memorial service at the Ladies Literary Club for Leila Riley '59, who died in May at age 86. Riley's late husband was a professor in the EMU Department of Music and she assisted him in writing a history of the viola. Riley taught 5th grade for 25 years at Willow Run's Holmes Elementary School.
CREDIT HOURSFinal, official credit hours for the COE for 2000-2001 produced a total of 83,446, an increase of 3,188 (3.97%) over the previous year. This included an 8.80% increase in Teacher Education, a 6.64% increase in Student Teaching, a 4.20% increase in Special Education, a 0.29% increase in Leadership and Counseling, and a 2.05% decrease in HPERD.
COUNCIL OF GREAT CITY COE'sThe EMU College of Education is one of 73 members of the Council of the Great City Colleges of Education. This is an organization of COE's that have a special mission or programming related to the needs of schools in the "Great Cities." The Council of Great City Schools is seeking nominations for the Richard R. Green Award for outstanding contributions to urban education, and for the Queen Smith Award for commitment to urban education. Information is available from Terry Tabor at 202.393.2427.
