FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
John Tonkovich has been named to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) program committee for 2002. He will chair the subcommittee on motor speech disorders in children and adults.
Lizbeth Stevens recently attended the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) 2001 Schools conference in Boston. She was involved in sessions related to her work as the State Education Advocacy Leader (SEAL) for Michigan.
Jim Berry, Ron Williamson, Helen Ditzhazy, and Chuck Achilles are attending the annual meeting of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration this week in Houston, TX.
Carolyn Finch and Barbara Gorenflo are in Portland, OR, attending the ATE summer workshop.
Beth Johnson presented a workshop on “Teach and Reach ‘Em Like a Drug Dealer!” for faculty at Edmonson Middle School, Willow Run. Caroline Gould presented a session on communication.
Jerry Robbins attended a meeting of the MACTE Executive Board this past Friday. The meeting was held here at EMU.
Lynne Rocklage will be in Lansing on Friday attending an autism training collaborative meeting.
Jeanne Pietig (past president) and Irene Ametrano (member at large) are on the EMU-AAUP Executive Committee.
A number of COE faculty members and administrators participated in last Saturday’s EMU student recruitment activity.
Nancy Dahl recently published on the poetry page of “The Herb Network.”
ALUMNI NOTES
Michelle May ‘00, who did her student teaching in Missoula, MT, will teach fifth grade in Vancouver, WA this fall.
Jenny Page ‘00 is now teaching 5th grade in Maryland and will start a masters in reading at the University of Maryland this fall.
Dave Hebert ‘00, who has elementary and early childhood education credentials, is scheduled to teach in Farmington Hills this fall.
Mary Durban ‘00 and Amy Beckett ‘01 will be teaching in the same building in the Brighton district this fall.
SPONSORED PROJECT AWARD
Dale Rice has received a $25,500 award from the U.S. Department of Education for “Sustainable Model for Academic Service-Learning–Supplement.” This will provide support for a second two-day workshop and travel for participating universities to attend conferences and disseminate project information.
CREDIT HOURS
The Department of Teacher Education’s credit hours for the Summer term are 10.10% higher than final credit hours for last Summer term. Teacher Education is already 5.71% ahead of last Fall’s final credit hour amount.
WELLNESS MURAL
There is a new, large “wellness mural” on the wall of the middle north-south corridor of the second floor of the Porter Building, courtesy of HPERD. The purpose of the mural is to increase awareness of the importance of personal wellness and positive behavior change through the six major dimensions of wellness. The mural was prepared by J Giordano Studios and executed by Julie Giordano and Loraine Hodgson.
STUDENT NOTES
In the Fall of 2000, both the number of “new undergraduate students” in the COE (835) and the number of “returning undergraduate students” (2,767) were at all-time record highs for the college. Among declared majors, the COE had 24.14% of EMU’s undergraduate students and 35.17% of EMU’s graduate students.
The number of undergraduate students in the COE in Fall 2000 (3,602) was an all time for the COE. By contrast, the number of graduate students in the COE in Fall 2000 (1,467) was only the 14th highest such number in the past 21 years.
The most popular “major” for EMU students for the past five years has been “elementary education-intent” and the second most popular “major” in Fall 2000 was “three minors-elementary.”
