STUDENT NOTES

Several students in Judy Williston’s CURR 693, Seminar in Early Childhood Education, recently presented their final seminars before State Representative George Mans (D, 23rd District). In addition, Representative Mans discussed the debate over educational issues in the Legislature and asked for the teachers’ input. Representative Mans requested copies of the five papers that were presented. Members of the class presented him with a copy of one of the texts for the course, Education on the Edge of Possibility.

Cara Jasiolek won the Miss Redford/Wayne pageant and is headed to the Miss Michigan pageant.

FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

Sherry Jerome participated in the National Ballet School of Canada’s week-long intensive dance teachers seminar. She was one of 100 dance teachers from around the world invited to participate.

John Tonkovich recently surveyed a medical

rehabilitation program in Alton, IL for the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

Sylvia Jones received a Provost’s Faculty Travel Grant.

Sherry Jerome recently taught an intermedi-ate/advanced ballet master class at the Arts in Motion Dance Studio in Ann Arbor. She also taught a week-long jazz dance workshop for high school students who were participating in EMU’s Upward Bound program.

Nancy Dahl had three poems published in a “Michigan Poets” edition of “Sound of Poetry.”

ON THE INTERNATIONAL FRONT

Leah Adams (emeritus) sent her regards by email, using a Spanish-language keyboard in the lobby of a hotel in Santiago, Chile. She was there for two weeks for back-to-back conferences, three presentations, and committee and executive board meetings, much of which was related to the World Council on Early Childhood Education, of which she is a top officer.

ALUMNI NOTES

Bessie E. Kramer, age 98, of Ypsilanti Township, died recently. As a young woman, she attended the county normal school in Mason, MI and she then taught in a one-room school in the Stockbridge area. Desiring to improve her skills, she attended summer sessions during the early 1920's at “Ypsilanti Normal.” However, during WWII, she worked at Willow Run making bombers and became the first woman to work in a tool crib.

SPONSORED PROJECT ACTIVITY

During July, COE faculty members submitted eight proposals in the amount of $276,250. This compares very favorably with two proposals in the amount of $189,516 for July 2000. During July there was one award in the amount of $25,000.

CREDIT HOURS

The COE is within 165 credit hours (2.54%) of matching our very large number of credit hours last summer. We are already within 11% of matching our very large number of credit hours for last Fall. Teacher Education is already 6.79% ahead of last Fall’s final figures.

FOOTBALL TICKETS

EMU faculty/staff season football tickets are available at $35 each. In addition, there is a “combination package” available that permits the holder to use tickets in any combination for any game(s). For information, 734.487.2282.

STUDENT STATS

In the Fall of 2000, the COE undergraduate student body included 218 students from Ohio, 105 from elsewhere in the U.S., and 16 foreign students; 707 men (19.6%); 372 Black (10.3%); 113 Unknown (3.1%); 71 Hispanic (2.0%); 35 Asian/Pacific Islander (1.0%); 27 American Indian (0.7%), and 17 Alien (0.4%).
