COFFEE WITH THE DEAN

The first "coffee with the dean" session of the year will be held today from 9:00-10:00 a.m., in the Porter Building 3rd floor Faculty/Staff Lounge. There is no agenda. All faculty, staff, and students are invited.

FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

Jeff Schulz has been named to the review board for the American Journal of Health Studies.

Gary Banks presented "Coaching Athletics and Case Law Developments" to a group of high school athletic coaches at a workshop sponsored by the Michigan High School Athletic Association and held in Farmington.

An interview with Jerry Robbins on certification issues has appeared in the Michigan Education Association Voice.

Marvin Johnson has renewed his instructor certification in the American Sports Education Program (ASEP). He will be presenting the ASEP foundation course for local-area high school coaches at Lincoln High School.

Dean Emeritus Scott Westerman, along with others, will be honored at a benefit dinner on October 18, sponsored by the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation. For information, call Robin Wax at 734.971.2458.

Lynne Rocklage recently represented EMU at the Institutions of Higher Education Special Education Advisory Board meeting in Lansing.

Yvonne Callaway presented a mini-workshop on "Diversity in the Workplace" for the support staff of the College of Health and Human Services.

Carolyn Finch has been named as the COE representative on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee.

Among the service anniversaries being celebrated this month by COE personnel are: John E. "Jack" Sheard, 38 years; Thomas Gwaltney, 37 years; Kathleen Quinn, 36 years; Irene Anderson, 35 years; Nora Martin and Dale Rice, 34 years; Erik Pedersen, 33 years; Gary Banks, Betty Barber, George Barach, Gloria Neve, and Lou Thayer, 32 years; and Joe Coyner and Gary Navarre, 31 years.

ALUMNI NOTES

Phyllis Ranson '78, '88, a physical wellness teacher at Lakewood Elementary School in West Ottawa, has been selected as a runner in the relay to light the Olympic torch for the 2002 Winter Olympics. She will run 0.2 mile in Indiana on January 3 or 4. About 300 of her students wrote letters last spring nominating her.

Alice Brobst-Walsh of Milan was the subject of a feature article in the Ann Arbor News for her receipt of the Odyssey Award from the Michigan Historical Center Foundation.

STUDENT NOTES

This summer the Men's Gymnastics Club spent $2,954 to update gymnastics equipment in Warner. This equipment is also used by various physical education classes.

The Michigan Department of Career Development and the Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan, is sponsoring an opportunity for student research "to continuously improve the Career Development System that produces a workforce with the required skills to maintain and enhance Michigan's economy. CREDIT HOURS

As of September 13, the College of Education's credit hours for Fall was 5.02% ahead of final figures for last Fall. This included a 13.42% increase in Teacher Education, a 3.20% increase in Student Teaching, and a 1.43% increase in HPERD.
