FROM "THE SCHOOL THAT WENT TO COLLEGE" By Ruth B. MacFarlane
(Continued from previous issues)
Professor Carroll Osborn, who had been with the project since that first Bicentennial Committee meeting [in the '70's], watch dogged the process [of making the Geddes Town Hall ready for public use on the EMU campus]. He held out for restoration, whereby the building would be restored to its original state, instead of being only repaired or remodeled. That turned out to be an expensive proposition, and there had to be compromises. Formerly, the schoolhouse had rested on only a foundation, but a new basement was built to house the administrative offices. The front steps were eliminated and the door widened, to permit access for wheel chairs. At the rear of the classroom, there were two new doors, one leading to a modern restroom, the other to the basement.
A Town Hall School Reunion, held in conjunction with Ypsilanti's Heritage Festival, drew former students from near and far. Others who wanted to come, could not, because of health or economics, but those who did had a great time reminiscing. A float in the weekend parade carried Dean Rockwell, general chairman of the Town Hall Schoolhouse Project, along with Frank B. Norman, former treasurer of the school board. At Homecoming in October, the little schoolhouse was formally dedicated as an education museum.
The One-Room Schoolhouse Committee dissolved, to metamorphose into the Friends of the One Room School, many of the same individuals continuing to work to preserve and utilize the old-new facility. There were continuing needs, such as wrought-iron desks, old text books, and a multitude of other items, as well as continuing maintenance.
