FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Christine Karshin presented "Mixing Sex and Alcohol: Factors Predicting Risky Sex After Drinking" at the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality conference in San Diego last month.
Cristina Jose Kampfner was the keynote speaker at the fourth conference of the National Hispano/Latino Community Prevention Network, held in New Mexico. Jose Kampfner also recently attended the national panel meeting in Washington, D.C. to discuss "people of color with behavioral health needs who cycle through the justice system."
Ron Williamson presented "Human Perspectives on High Stakes Accountability Systems: How Preparation Programs Respond" at the Southern Regional Council on Educational Administration annual conference in Jacksonville, FL this past weekend.
Nora Martin was one of the presenters at the first Leadership Training 101 session, held near Dearborn, sponsored by DEY (Detroit, EMU, Yale) on October 22-26. There were 192 people enrolled in training related to the Comer Project, including participants from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, South Carolina, and Florida.
Dean emeritus Scott Westerman was one of two honorees at a recent dinner to benefit the Ann Arbor Public School Educational Foundation. The citation included "for distinguished service as Superintendent of Ann Arbor Public Schools, as Dean of Eastern Michigan College of Education, and as a Community Leader."
Lynne Rocklage attended a meeting last week at Michigan Virtual University concerning the autism collaborative.
ON THE INTERNATIONAL FRONT
The COE International and Global Education Project will hold its next discussion session on November 7 in Room 213, Porter Building, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Bring your lunch. SPOTLIGHT ON EBONI ZAMANI . . .
Eboni M. Zamani joined the Eastern Michigan University Department of Leadership and Counseling this fall as an assistant professor in educational leadership. She is a Chicago, IL native and completed her post-secondary education within her home state. She holds a B.S. in psychology and an M.S. in experimental psychology from Western Illinois University. Her doctoral studies were pursued at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she earned a Ph.D. in higher education administration with cognates in community college leadership and educational evaluation.
Zamani was previously a graduate faculty member at West Virginia University in the Department of Advanced Educational Studies. She has taught a variety of courses (e.g., community college leadership, educational leadership theory and practice, educational policy analysis, introduction to higher education, and diversity in education). She also has had a wide assortment of teaching posts on a part-time basis.
Zamani has held various research appointments, including fellowships with ACT, Inc., Mathematics Policy Research Associates and the Office of Community College Research Leadership. She has presented at numerous professional meetings and maintains active scholarly endeavors. Her research and publications have largely examined retention and transition among two- and four-year students, college readiness and remediation of high school graduates and the changing context of attitudinal responses toward affirmative action in higher education.
STUDENT NOTES
Lori Zahrt will defend her dissertation, "High School Reform Math Programs: A Program Evaluation for Leaders," on November 6, 3:30-5:30 p.m., in the conference room in Suite 304, Porter Building. David Anderson is the chairperson. The public is invited.
Vignettes of several prospective teachers were included in the annual report of the EMU Foundation. These include Jordan Desilets, a prospective science teacher, involved in EMU track and field events; Tracy Carroll, a recent graduate in POHI and a viola player; Willie Hunt, a recent graduate now teaching kindergarten in Westwood; Tim Hoff, a prospective secondary teacher, probably in the social science areas, a member of the EMU wrestling team; Chen-Chen Tu, from Taiwan, who is studying educational media and technology; and Charlotte Tillerson, of Detroit, with a 12-year-old son, studying to become a teacher of the emotionally impaired.
ALUMNI NOTES
In the Detroit News "teacher of the week" feature for October 29, three county honorees were EMU alums. These included the Wayne Teacher of the Week, Margie Lemkuhl, Central Middle School (Plymouth-Canton), who teaches a group of 31 students from 11 countries, who speak, among them, 13 languages; the Oakland Teacher of the Week, Jim Cromie, Hart Middle School (Rochester), a teacher of the seventh grade who also coaches track; and the Livingston Teacher of the Week, Marilyn Nielsen, a third-grade teacher at Northwest Elementary (Howell). Neilsen's master's degree is in learning disabilities.

SPONSORED PROJECTS
Nora Martin, with Jerry Robbins as the administrator, has been awarded $450,000 by the Skillman Foundation for "Comer Schools and Families Initiative, Year 8." This is the eighth year of support from the Skillman Foundation for continuing the implementation and replication of the nine elements of the school development program in the Detroit Comer Schools.
DEVELOPMENT NEWS
A substantial donation by Barbara and Stan Smart to the Marylyn Lake Scholarship Fund has been received. Barbara Smart is an EMU alum, a teacher, and Marylyn Lake's sister. The Smarts live in Kalamazoo.
DEAN'S ACADEMIC SERVICE-LEARNING INITIATIVE
Jerry Robbins announces the formation of the Dean's Academic Service-Learning Initiative. Stipends are available for a limited number of faculty members in the COE who develop/update their course syllabus and conduct activities to include Academic Service-Learning in a course.
Academic Service-Learning blends curriculum objectives with community service to meet academic goals. The initiative enables students to meet a community need through service while reflecting upon how the service ties into their course objectives.

UNITED WAY REPORT
As of last Friday, COE contributions to the United Way drive came from 52 persons in the amount of $11,600.05. This included 13 participants in Special Education, 12 in Teacher Education, 10 in Leadership and Counseling, seven in HPERD, six in the dean's office, and five from other COE offices. Thanks to all who participated and especially to our team leaders Merri McClure, Jennifer McLaughlin, Karen Garvey, Lou Thayer, Yulanda Woods, and Sara Higgens.
CREDIT HOURS
OPPORTUNITIES AND EVENTSAs of October 24, COE credit hours for Fall were 7.39% ahead of the final figure for last Fall. This includes a 14.81% increase for Teacher Education, a 10.65% increase for Student Teaching, a 3.23% increase for HPERD, a 2.39% increase for L&C, and a 1.63% decrease for Special Education. For the fiscal year to date, COE credit hours are 5.94% ahead of the same time last year, including a 14.28% increase in Teacher Education, a 10.61% increase in Student Teaching, and a 0.14% increase in HPERD.
Between FY98 and FY01, COE credit hours increased 13%, during which time EMU credit hours increased 4%. The COE percentage increase was larger than that for any other EMU college.
