SPONSORED PROJECTS

For the July through November period, faculty members have submitted 22 proposals for external funding. This compares with seven at the same time last year, a 214% increase. Fourteen awards have been received, compared with eight at this time last year, a 75% increase.

The dollar value of proposals submitted is 4% more than at the same time last year. To date, $1,274,800 has been received. If awards continue for the remainder of the year at the same rate, we will break last year's all-time high record!

MVU ON-LINE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS

The Michigan Virtual University has issued a call for proposals for on-line professional development grants. MVU is interested in offering short, CEU-generating, learning experiences, taught by faculty members in Michigan universities and colleges, for K-12 faculty members.

Five priority topic areas have been identified, although others will be considered as well. It is expected that most teaching/learning activities will occur over the Internet. Awards will range from $5,000 to $10,000 per workshop. Funds may be used for released time, spring/summer salary, direct project costs, GA's, software, or supplies.

There are two deadlines. Awards will be made following February 15 and again following April 15. For additional information, contact Perrin Fenske at perrinf@mivu.org.

COE COUNCIL MEETING

The College of Education Council met on December 12 with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding.

Upon recommendation of the Basic Programs Committee, the COE Council endorsed changes in CHEM 241 and ESCI 303. In addition, the Council endorsed proposed changes in the geography teaching major and the geography teaching minor.

Upon recommendation of the Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee, the COE Council endorsed changes in NURS 341 and approval of the proposed new PSY 777 Advanced History and Systems of Psychology. However, the COE Council tabled action on a proposed undergraduate program in Aviation Flight Technology and eight proposed courses to support that program. The Council requested that a representative of the program attend the next meeting to answer questions.

At an earlier meeting, the COE Council adopted a conditional approval of changes in master's level programming in the College of Technology. In response to COE concerns, the Department of Business and Technology Education proposed changed wording, which was approved by the COE Council, in effect removing the conditional approval.

A number of reports were received, concluding with the Dean's report about calendar and preparations related to the forthcoming NCATE and State Periodic Review. There was a lengthy discussion, which will be continued at the next meeting, about how to determine who drafts the various documents needed.
