Professor emeritus Louise Jernigan, mother of David Jernigan (student worker in Teacher Education), has been traveling in Mexico in recent times. Highly unfortunately, her husband, Professor emeritus (English) Jay Jernigan suffered a heart attack and died while they were in Guadalajara.
SPONSORED PROJECTS
Ellen Hoffman has received $115,000 from the Eaton County Intermediate School District for "Michigan Coalition for School Technology Improvement-Center for Information Development, Year 2." This partnership with Eaton County ISD and Michigan State University will continue identifying and evaluating effective practices and developing new information that can assist districts and teachers in their efforts to implement instruction technologies that improve student performance.
ALUMNI NOTES
Monday Report has learned of the death several months ago of Ernest J. Buckholz '32. Buckholz was a member of the famous EMU football team of 1930. He later taught and coached in Mt. Clemens, served as the athletic director in that district, and served 13 years as the secretary-treasurer for the Michigan High School Athletic Association, accumulating many honors and recognitions along the way. The Mt. Clemens football stadium is named in his honor.
Jim Owens '71, '77 and Pete Kudlak '92, '94 were featured recently in the Ann Arbor News for the successes their Erickson Elementary School students have had in state competition in chess.
Beth MacCurdy Wigner '79 sang in Carnegie Hall with the Shawnee Mission (KS) High School alumni choir.
Jeff Bradley '90, a science teacher at Slauson Middle School, has had his 8th grade students promote the idea of having the mastodon adopted as the state fossil for Michigan. Students have gathered more than 4,000 names on a petition and about 300 parents and students held a rally last Wednesday on the Capitol steps.
ADMISSIONS, INITIAL PROGRAM
Admissions to the EMU initial teacher preparation program are now predicted to be 1,409 by the end of the fiscal year. If the prediction holds, that will be a 12% increase over last year, a 27% increase over two years ago, and a 41% increase over the number admitted three years ago.
Of these, 27% are men, 36% are post-baccalaureate students, and 12% are persons of color. All these are unusually high numbers and percentages.
Prospective elementary teachers make up 46% of the total group admitted, about the same as last year. Prospective secondary teachers make up another 34% of the population, with growth in most "high demand" areas. The prospective teachers in the K-12 fields account for about 9% of our admissions this year, with prospective special education teachers accounting for the remaining 9%. The acceptance rate is 87%.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
April 26. The statewide Young Educators Society (YES) will meet at EMU. Presenters are needed for small group sessions during the day. For additional information, contact Carolyn Finch. Names are needed by February 19.

"HONOR AN EDUCATOR" OPPORTUNITY ESTABLISHED
The College of Education has established an opportunity for anyone to "Honor an Educator," both at an April 26, 2002 recognition event and in perpetuity through a Porter Building wall plaque.
Recognitions may be originated by an individual (to honor your first-grade teacher, your high school math teacher, your basketball coach, your favorite college professor, etc.) or by a well-defined group of persons (former students of X, XHS class of '62, etc.). It is not necessary for either the honorer(s) or honoree to have "an EMU connection."
Proposed recognitions must be accompanied by a check (made payable to the EMU Foundation) or a pledge of $1,000. Contact Alice Preketes (734.484.3237) for information concerning making a pledge or paying in installments. EMU employees may also arrange for payroll deduction. Proceeds from the event will go to support a scholarship for a prospective teacher that will be administered through the College of Education.
Proposed recognitions for this year's event must be submitted by February 28, 2002. Forms for doing so are available in the dean's office of the COE.
There will be two parts to the April 26 recognition event. At 5:30 p.m., there will be a reception in the Student Lounge area (second floor, Porter Building), to which the public is invited. During the reception, there will be an unveiling of wall plaques commemorating both the honoree and those initiating the recognition.
A by-invitation-only dinner will follow. Each donor will receive four complementary tickets and others may be purchased by prior arrangement for $25 each. During the dinner, each donor will have an opportunity to explain why the honoree has been significant in her/his life. Honorees will receive a framed certificate commemorating the recognition and the event.
