EMU AT ATE

Several COE faculty/staff members attended the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) convention in Denver.

Presentations by EMU personnel included:

Georgea Langer (with Barbara Leapard, Mathematics, and Jeanna Fox, Ypsilanti West Middle School), "Linking Teacher Preparation to K-12 Student Learning Gains: One University's Experience in the Renaissance Partnership for Improving Teacher Quality."

Sue Grossman and Judy Williston, "Developing a Model for Leadership Across the Professional Life Span."

Wendy Burke, Toni Stokes Jones and Martha Baiyee, "Using Authentic Assessment to Evaluate Teacher Candidates."

Barb Gorenflo attended meetings of the Field Directors/Student Teaching Supervisors group. As president of the Michigan Association of Teacher Educators (MATE), Gorenflo attended the Council of Unit Presidents meeting. MATE received two awards, one for Achievement and the other for Excellence in Program/Services during the awards and recognition ceremony.

FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

The Standards-Based Administrative Internship: Putting the ISLLC Standards into Practice, by former faculty member Don Hackman, Donna M. Schmitt-Oliver (emeritus), and Jaclynn C. Tracy will be released on April 28 by Scarecrow Press' Education Division.

Deborah Harmon published "They Won't Teach Me: The Voices of Gifted African-American Inner-City Students" in the recent issue of Roeper Review-A Journal on Gifted Education.

John Tonkovich's review of Legal Aspects of Documenting Patient Care appeared in a recent issue of Topics in Language Disorders.

Georgea Langer's work (with Amy Colton) on analyzing student performance is featured in a new videotape ("Collaborative Analysis of Student Learning") recently produced by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Kathleen Conley presented "InTime (Integrating New Technologies into the Methods of Education): Perspectives from a Participant" at the Stop Surfing Start Teaching conference in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Ron Williamson (with Jodi Wirt, Naperville IL schools) presented "Restoring Confidence in the Middle School: Collaborating to Strengthen the Educational Experience for Students" at the National Council of Professors of Education Administration (NCPEA) conference-within-a-conference during the AASA convention in San Diego.

Jeff Schultz has been named as a reviewer of proposals submitted to the Research Council of the American School Health Association.

Jim Berry recently attended the annual meeting of the American Council on Education. He also attended the American Association of School Administrators convention in California, during which he participated in a board meeting of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration.

Gary Banks presented "Release/Waiver/Immunity: Gross Negligence and the Protection is Gone" at the Michigan Recreation and Parks convention in Traverse City. At the same convention, Jerry Ricciardo presented "Grant Usage Among Park and Recreation Agencies in the State of Michigan."

Irene Allen presented "A Life of Learning and Enjoyment Through Literacy" at the recent Open Classroom conference held at the Emrich Conference Center.

Shel Levine, Jeff Armstrong, and Steve McGregor recently attended the Michigan American College of Sports Medicine convention in Gaylord.

Jerry Robbins was in Lansing recently, presiding over a meeting of the Committee of Scholars (of the Michigan Department of Education) review of materials submitted by the University of Phoenix.

Lizbeth Stevens represented the Michigan Speech Hearing Association at the recent meeting where State Superintendent Tom Watkins announced proposed revisions in the Administrative Rules that relate to special education services. Stevens had earlier testified on the subject and her testimony was picked up by the news services.

Jerry Robbins has been named to membership in the Horace Mann League. This national organization was created in 1922 to strengthen public education in the country.

Lisa Delpit, holder of the John W. Porter Chair in Urban Education, will be the keynote speaker for the C-SIP winter conference on February 19.

Carolyn Finch has been selected to participate in the next cohort of "Leadership EMU."

Karen Paciorek has been appointed to the university Strategic Planning Committee. Olga Nelson has been named to the university's Undergraduate Individualized Studies Program committee.

Leah Adams, emeritus, was honored recently at a brunch at The Ohio State University. The event was in honor of those initiated into Phi Upsilon Omicron honorary 50 years ago. Adams was elected to membership in six honor societies during her undergraduate program at OSU.

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

Leah D. Adams, emeritus, with her husband Tim, have created the Leah D. Adams Endowment to support high quality graduate research relating to the education of young children, 0-8. When fully funded and implemented, the endowment will support the Leah D. Adams Graduate Research Scholarship.

This scholarship will provide support for high quality graduate research relating to the education of young children, birth through age eight, which shows promise for increasing knowledge about the education of the young child and/or implications for teacher education.

Leah Adams served as a faculty member in the Department of Teacher Education from 1969-1999.

ALUMNI NOTES

Jim Vick '75 was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News as one of the Finalists in the "Citizen of the Year" recognitions in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area. Vick is Vice President for Student Affairs at EMU. He was recognized in particular for his work with Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels.

Three of the six awards made recently by the Michigan Association of School Administrators went to EMU alums. They are:

Arnold Kummerow '68, '75, superintendent of the Armada Area Schools, for his leadership in establishing a program such that all Armada elementary students now receive weekly piano lessons.

Kathy Malnar '88, '90, '96, superintendent of the Hudson Area Schools, for her leadership in the Community Resource Fair, an all-day event that brought together residents and service providers to match resources and meet needs.

Bob Staple '69, superintendent of the Breitung Township School District (Kingsford) for initiating the "Great 8 Winter Games" for regional student athletes. Eight school districts, with more than 2000 participants, come together for Olympic-style events.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

April 9. The "Day in the Life of the COE" photography event and competition needs volunteers for the organizational aspects and needs numerous participants. For information, contact dayinthelife@online.emich.edu.

April 26. The statewide Young Educators Society (YES) will meet at EMU. Presenters are needed for small group sessions during the day. For additional information, contact Carolyn Finch. Names are needed by February 19.

May 4. The COE will sponsor a Tech Fair in the Porter Building on May 4. There will be tracks for faculty, students, alumni, and teachers. Volunteers are needed to help plan and coordinate activities for the day. To volunteer, contact Jean Rauch at coetechsig@online.emich.edu or at X2645. Names are needed by February 18.

STUDENT NOTES

MACSM conference. Undergraduate student Kara Spencer presented "Rating of Perceived Exertion Responses to Pharmacological Stress Testing" at the Michigan American College of Sports Medicine conference in Gaylord.

Graduate student presentations were made by:

Patrick Johnson, "Hormonal Responses to Administration of 1-Androstendiol in Young Males"; Jillian Smith, "Exercise Concerns in Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome"; and Alicen Faltisco, "Effects of Different Methods of Weight Training on Blood Pressure in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease."

Other students in attendance were: (undergraduates) Katie Rybicki, Grace Vondra, Sue Clevenger, Lisa Mauch, Sean Deering, Alicia Brashear, and Laura Diekman. Graduate student Jennifer Packas also attended.

In the second annual Exercise Science Jeopardy competition, EMU won (over MSU and CSU). The EMU team consisted of Lisa Mauch, Kara Spencer, and Patrick Johnson.

Dissertation Defenses. The public is invited to attend the following dissertation defenses.

Katherine Ellis will defend her dissertation "Diversified Gender Leadership in Michigan Public School Superintendent Positions" on February 19 at 2:00 p.m. in Porter 304B. Helen E. R. Ditzhazy is the chair.

Joseph Thomas will defend his dissertation "A Comparative Study of Peace Officers' Basic Training and Their Actual Job Experience" on March 11 at 1:00 p.m. in Porter 301B. Helen E.R. Ditzhazy is the chair.

MCOATT. The January issue of the MACUL Newsletter contains an interview with several of the nine preservice teachers and 12 inservice teachers who were awarded the Michigan Certificate for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching with Technology (MCOATT). Among these was Jane McCraight-Wertz, who became interested in the MCOATT credential through her EMU course work and the influence of Ellen Hoffman.

G.A. Award. Nominations are accepted until March 4 for the Ronald W. and Gerri Collins Medals for Excellence in Graduate Assistantship. Additional information is available on the Graduate School web site or from Patrick Melia, 7-0379.

Student Affairs Careers. Undergraduate students interested in a career in student affairs are invited to an event on February 19, 3:30-5:00 p.m., 205 Welch Hall, sponsored by the Divisions of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services and by the COE Department of Leadership and Counseling.

MACTE Scholarship. The Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education has announced its 2002 scholarship program. Applications may be obtained in the COE Office of Academic Services and the application deadline is March 4. Finalists will be honored at the April 12 MACTE Spring Conference.

Eligibility for the $1,000 award includes a 3.5 or better overall GPA, formal admission into the teacher education program, expectation of completing requirements for eligibility for certification by June 2002, and completion of the required application materials.
