MARGERUM-LEYS RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

At 10:30 this morning, Jon Margerum-Leys will make an invited presentation in New York City at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education convention. This presentation will be based on his dissertation, completed at the University of Michigan, on “Teacher Knowledge of Educational Technology: A Case Study of Student Teacher/Mentor Pairs.”

Tomorrow morning, Margerum-Leys will be presented with the AACTE 2002 “Outstanding Dissertation Award” for the quality of his work.  The AACTE award recognizes excellence in doctoral dissertation research that contributes to the knowledge base of teacher education or of teaching and learning with implications for teacher education. The award carries several kinds of professional recognition: a  presentation based on the dissertation research at the AACTE Annual Meeting; publication of an article in the Journal of Teacher Education based on the dissertation; and a cash prize.

Margerum-Leys’ study explored teacher knowledge of educational technology through the lens of three components of Shulman’s model of teachers’ knowledge–content, pedagogy, and pedagogical content knowledge–using data from a three-month observation period.  The study also investigated ways in which teacher knowledge was acquired, shared, and used by student teachers and their mentors.

Margerum-Leys joined the COE/Teacher Education educational technology faculty full time in the Fall of 2000 after working as a part-time lecturer for the previous year and a half. Prior to joining Eastern's faculty, Margerum-Leys was a Spencer Foundation Research Training Fellow at the University of Michigan from 1995—2000.

Margerum-Leys' background includes Master of Arts degrees in educational technology (University of Michigan) and curriculum and instruction (California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo), along with a bachelor's degree in  music education from the University of Wisconsin. His classroom teaching experience includes two years at the  middle school level in New Hampshire and five years at the high school level in California, including two years as a department head.

Robbins presided over a meeting of the Education deans of The Renaissance Group institutions and over a meeting of a Renaissance Group task force which he chairs on “The Nation’s Report Card.”

This afternoon, Robbins will represent EMU at a meeting of the USA-SINO Teacher Education Consortium.  He will also present “Recognizing, Recording, and Reporting Excellence in Performance as a Collaborative Endeavor” as part of a panel on accountability in teacher education.

Still later today, at the request of the AACTE Global and International Teacher Education Committee, he will present “Curriculum, Program and Response to 9-11.”

“HONOR AN EDUCATOR” OPPORTUNITY ESTABLISHED

The College of Education has established an opportunity for anyone to “Honor an Educator,” both at an April 26, 2002 recognition event and in perpetuity through a Porter Building wall plaque.

Recognitions may be originated by an individual (to honor your first-grade teacher, your high school math teacher, your basketball coach, your favorite college professor, etc.) or by a well-defined group of persons (former students of X, XHS class of ‘62, etc.).  It is not necessary for either the honorer(s) or honoree to have “an EMU connection.”

Proposed recognitions must be accompanied by a check (made payable to the EMU Foundation) or a pledge of $1,000.  Contact Alice Preketes (734.484.3237) for information concerning making a pledge or paying in installments.  EMU employees may also arrange for payroll deduction.   Proceeds from the event will go to support a scholarship for a prospective teacher that will be administered through the College of Education.

Nominations for this year’s event must be submitted by February 28 (later by arrangement).  Forms are available in the dean’s office of the COE.

There will be two parts to the April 26 recognition event.  At 5:30 p.m., there will be a reception in the Student Lounge area (second floor, Porter Building), to which the public is invited.  During the reception, there will be an unveiling of wall plaques commemorating both the honoree and those initiating the recognition.

A by-invitation-only dinner will follow.  Each donor will receive four complementary tickets and others may be purchased by prior arrangement for $25 each.  During the dinner, each donor will have an opportunity to explain why the honoree has been significant in her/his life.  Honorees will receive a framed certificate commemorating the recognition and the event.
