COE CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE
The annual College of Education Celebration of Excellence will honor several hundred students during ceremonies on March 21, 4:00-5:00 p.m., in the McKenny Union Ballroom.
Entertainment will be provided by a choral group under the direction of Leonard Riccinto (Music). The address of the hour will be given by former EMU president William Shelton, Regents Professor in the Department of Leadership and Counseling.
Joan Quinlan is chair of the planning committee. She is assisted by Sylvia Bethea, Andrea Brown, Charlene Chambers, Jennifer Rieger, Limor Gutnick, and Heather Shelton. Technical support for the event will be provided by Cliff Elston.
Light refreshments will be served prior to the ceremony. The public is invited.
EDUCATION ALUMNI HALL OF FAME
The second class of inductees into the Education Alumni Hall of Fame will be recognized in ceremonies including a public reception on March 22, 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., Student Lounge area, 2nd floor, Porter Building. The public is invited. A dinner and concert party will follow for the invited guests.
Those to be honored are: the late Isaiah Bowman, world-famous geographer and former president of Johns Hopkins University; the late Marylyn Lake, beloved and distinguished EMU faculty member in Special Education; William "Bill" Mays, longtime executive secretary of the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association; Wilbert J. McKeachie, world-famous psychologist and leader in higher education; and Jack Price, distinguished mathematics educator and educational leader.
The reception will be followed by a dinner and a concert party for invited guests. The committee consists of Eddie Bedford, Lindsey Martin (Alumni Relations), Vicky Mushisky (Alumni Relations), Carolyn Nelson (G.A., dean's office), Kathlyn Parker, Sharon Pendleton, and Jerry Robbins.
MAHPERD HEALTH CONFERENCE
The third annual Health Conference of the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, on the theme of "Got Health," was held in the Porter Building last Saturday, hosted by HPERD.
Jeff Schulz presented "Using the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model to Evaluate School Violence Prevention Programs."
Christine Karshin presented "Curriculum Infusion: A Vehicle for Health Education."
Susan McCarthy presented "Participation Opportunity Points for Students."
Kay Woodiel presented "Peaceful World- Using Music and Health Education for Conflict Resolution."
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Jim Berry will be studying institutions in Mexico as part of his ACE Fellowship program during approximately the second half of April.
Eboni Zamani is in London this week, presenting "Revisiting Postsecondary Access and Inclusion for Diverse Populations: The Role of Affirmative Action and ADA in Providing Opportunity" at the Oxford Roundtable. This paper is an outgrowth of research she conducted with support from the Provost's New Faculty Research Award.
Nora Martin will be writing about and speaking on "Inclusion and Special Education" in several national Comer Project activities in the near future.
At the recent Michigan Association of Computer Users in Education (MACUL) conference in Grand Rapids, Ellen Hoffman (with Reuben Rubio and Tracy DuBay) presented a pre-conference workshop, sponsored by the new SIG on Teacher Education, on "Start Your Digital Portfolio Today." Hoffman also attended the organizational meeting of this SIG. Hoffman also presented "Best Practices in Michigan Classrooms: 'InTime' Videos." Jon Margerum-Lays (with K. Karr) presented "Effective Communication of School Data: Livening the Unleavened" as part of the main conference.
Jerry Robbins was elected chair of the Michigan Department of Education's Periodic Review/Program Evaluation Council at its recent meeting, which he did not attend.
Ron Williamson presented two invited pre-conference sessions for the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators at their annual conference. The sessions were on "Developing and Maintaining a High Achieving Middle School" and "Breaking the Time Barrier: Schedules to Improve Student Learning."
Gary Banks has been invited to present a paper at the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association midwinter conference in Traverse City.
Jenny Clark received the "Building Bridges for Disabilities" award last week at the "Where Eagles Soar" recognition.
Don Staub met this past week with representatives of the Monroe, Lenawee, and Hillsdale ISD's, along with representatives of other higher education institutions, to plan for a proposed NSF-funded Math and Science Partnership Grant. Staub was in Lansing on Friday to meet with Michigan Department of Education Field Service officers to discuss possible funding for a variety of school improvement projects. On behalf of the COE, Staub is pursuing several other funding opportunities.
Leah Adams, emeritus, is one of 40 professional development experts from across the country invited to participate in a working symposium April 14-16 at the University of North Carolina. The symposium is sponsored by the National prekindergarten Center and will discuss national strategies for producing a quality prekindergarten teacher work force.
STUDENT NOTES
Graduate Research Fair. The Graduate Research Fair will be held on March 18 in McKenny Union.
MACUL. Marcia Mardis, a doctoral student in educational leadership, was a featured speaker at the recent MACUL conference in Grand Rapids. She spoke on "The Curse of the Dead Text: A New Gestalt for Web Searching."
Jane McCraight-Wertz, student in the M.A. program in educational technology, with lecturer Nancy Copeland, presented "A Job Well Done! MCOATT, Recognition for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching With Technology." Amy LaVigne-Benore, also a master's student in educational technology, with Amy Jannsen (recent recipient of the graduate certificate in educational technology), presented "Integrating Technology With Career Education."
Jannsen and LaVigne-Benore presented "Net-scape Communicator: A Browser and So Much More." LaVigne-Benore (with S. Hoffman and J. Boyer) presented "Graphing Data in a Variety of Ways Using Claris or Appleworks."
Deb Dunbar, doctoral student, with S. King and Ellen Hoffman, presented "Improving Your Technology Plan: MDE Resources for Planners."
ALUMNI NOTES
Edith Dorothy Blackhurst, age 100, of Mayfield and Chelsea, died recently in Chelsea. After receiving her Life Certificate from The Normal, she taught for 37 years in the Traverse City and Flint areas. She retired from Cherry Knoll School in 1967 and helped start a Head Start Day Care Center in Traverse City.
Monday Report has learned of the deaths of Bernice M. Ries '30, of Blissfield; Lois E. Firtzharris '36, of Ypsilanti; Ada W. Fritz '42, of West Branch; Helen Oltmanns '54, '56, '61, '83 of Naples, FL; Dorthea V. Burger, '56, '60, of Cleveland, OH; and Barbara Hiser Andrews '57, of Dearborn.
Jim Carras '58 has retired after a long career as a golf coach, culminating in serving as head golf coach at the University of Michigan. Earlier he had taught for the Allen Park school district.
Mary Jo Kramer '72 was recently appointed superintendent of Darien schools in Connecticut. She previously served as superintendent of the Milford schools.
Robin Raymond '73 has left his position as assistant principal of Chelsea High School to serve the district as interim assistant to the executive director of business operations.
Tom Fahlstrom '76, '82 was recently featured in the Milan News for his many accomplishments as a teacher at Milan High School, where he has worked for 25 years. He teaches an array of classes, including AP English, radio broadcasting, video film, and public speaking.
Bill Wescott '78 is retiring after 26 years with the Chelsea school district. In recent times, he has been principal of Beach Middle School.
Mazie Brewer Wilmer '80, '81 received a 2001 Crystal Apple Award from the Saginaw News- one of 10 teachers that it says exemplify what is right in education. She teaches seventh grade.
Rollie William Hopgood '81, age 62, died recently while vacationing in Hawaii. He was the retired president of the Michigan Federation of Teachers and School-Related Personnel. His first teaching job was in Taylor, where he quickly became president of the local union. He spent two years as treasurer of the State Board of Education before going to work for the state federation.
Ed Richardson '84, '87 is retiring from education and from his position as superintendent of the Chelsea schools. He was formerly superintendent of the Olivet Community Schools, having worked earlier in the Adrian-Madison and Onsted-Morenci districts.
Walter Miller '86 has been appointed associate vice president for student development at the University of New Mexico.
Gene C. Skidmore '89 received the Region 2 Assistant Coach of the Year award from the Michigan High School Coaches Association for the 2001 football season. He is a middle school girls track and head field coach in Wyandotte.
Amy Joy Wedge '89 '96, who teaches at Leesville High School in Raleigh, NC, recently earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Lorene Reed '91, '97 was featured in the Guardian newspaper recently. She teaches social studies and language arts at Custer I Elementary School in Monroe.
Julie Deppner '94 is now the interim assistant principal for Chelsea High School. She was named the Chelsea district's exemplary employee for 1999-2000.
SPONSORED PROJECTS
Ellen Hoffman, with co-director Jon Margerum-Leys, has received $10,584 from Spring Arbor University for "Developing an Ecology for Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers for Technology."
This project will develop an ecology for preparing teacher candidates who teach excellently with technology. The candidates will be teamed with cooperating teachers and university supervisors. An increasing percentage of the teams will involve school districts that are technologically under-served.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
April 9. The "Day in the Life of the COE" photography event and competition needs volunteers for the organizational aspects and needs numerous participants to provide still and video photographic coverage of a "typical" day in the life of the COE- both in the Porter Building and elsewhere. SHORT NOTES
USA-SINO Consortium. The USA-SINO Teacher Education Consortium, of which the COE is a member, has changed its name to the SINO-American Education Consortium. The organization's headquarters are now at Kennesaw State University in Georgia.
TMP. TMP, the architectural firm for the Porter Building, proudly announces three recent awards for design work.
ICET. The International Council on Education for Teaching (ICET) is accepting abstracts of proposals for presentations until March 16. The ICET meeting will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on July 3-7. For information, see www.nl.edu/icet.
Book Fair. Five major publishers will be represented in the Book Fair to be held on the second floor of the Porter Building on March 18 and 19, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
"No Child Left Behind" Videoconference. The Michigan Department of Education is sponsoring two video sessions on the new "No Child Left Behind" federal legislation. The date is March 21 and the times are 9:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m. Washtenaw ISD is a site for the morning session and Wayne RESA is a site for the afternoon session. Liberal Education. Carol Geary Schneider will speak on "Contemporary Understandings of Liberal Education" under the auspices of the General Education Reform Committee and the Division of Academic Affairs on March 25, noon to 1:30 p.m., Room 300, Halle Library.
School Finance. The third statewide Summit on School Finance will be held on March 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Plymouth Salem High School cafeteria, which is located in Canton at the southwest corner of Joy Road and Canton Center Road. The public is invited. For information, see www.mischoolfunding.org.
Webcast. A webcast on computerizing college composition, featuring Joel Foreman, whose current article in The Technology Source proposes a number of information technology innovations that can help streamline teaching composition. Banner Day. "Banner Day" has been rescheduled to April 4. Sessions will be held in G03 Halle (Auditorium) from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. and 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. The campus community is invited to see "a demonstration of the seamless, single sign-on web environment that EMU is creating to deliver services, information, campus communications, and academic resources."
Call for Reviewers. The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has issued a call for reviewers of papers for the 2003 AACTE annual meeting. Forms are available in each COE office or from AACTE Reviews, 1307 New York Ave., NW, Suite 300, Washington, DC 20005-4701. The deadline for submission is May 17.
Call for Papers. The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has issued a call for papers for the 2003 annual meeting, to be held in New Orleans, LA. The deadline is June 3. For additional information, see www.aacte.org.
AACTE participation is strongly encouraged. The dean's office will cover the travel expenses to the 2003 AACTE convention of one person per accepted presentation.
COE COUNCIL MEETING
The College of Education Council met on March 13, 2002 with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding.
Upon recommendation of the Basic Programs Committee, changes in the description for PLSC 310 were approved. Upon recommendation of the Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee, the following new courses were approved: INDT 445 Industrial Direct Response Marketing, INDT 446 Wholesale Policy and Distribution, INDT 448 Industrial Climate, MFG 580 Engineering and Enterprise Integration, HIST 529 History of Detroit, and LAW 603 Legal Environment of Nonprofit Organizations.
Various reports were received and there was a question-and-answer period with the dean.
