FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

Valerie Polakow received the Research in Global Child Advocacy Award recently. It was made by one of AERA's special interest groups for her "outstanding scholarship and advocacy for children and families in poverty."

Judy Williston and Sue Grossman presented "Growing Leaders for the New Millenium" at the annual conference of the Association for Childhood Education International in San Diego. They also attended meetings of the organization's publication committee, of which they are members.

Jerry Robbins was quoted in a recent story on male teachers in Michigan written by a reporter for the Associated Press. The story appeared in the Detroit Free Press and the Ann Arbor News, among other state papers, and has been picked up by at least one web-based education news "clipping service."

Carolyn Carter presented workshops on (with Raahue Reddy, Evans Solutions) "Sentence Basics: What Students Absolutely Must Know About the Sentence" and "Paragraph Basics: What Students Absolutely Must Know to Write and Understand Paragraphs Better" at the recent meeting of the Michigan Reading Association.

Jerry Robbins was a member of a panel at last Friday's Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education spring conference, held at UM-D, on "Periodic Review." Robbins is the president-elect of the organization.

Valerie Polakow was among those featured in a recent issue of "Focus EMU." The article focused on her scholarly activities.

Dick Adams, emeritus, suffered a heart problem while on campus last week. He underwent bypass surgery last Friday.

LISA DELPIT SCHEDULE

Lisa Delpit, holder of the John W. Porter Chair in Urban Education, will be in residency today through Wednesday. There will be a reception in her honor, to which the public is invited, on Tuesday, April 16, 4:00-5:00 p.m. in Porter 300 A/D.

BELL RECEIVES MACTE AWARD

Kathleen Bell was one of two students from throughout the state who were honored by MACTE at its spring conference at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Bell received a plaque and a check for $500 from the organization's scholarship committee.

Bell, of Livonia, is a major in Mental Impairment. She is currently student teaching at Webster Elementary School in Livonia. Bell is a post-bac student who also holds a master's degree in English.

ALUMNI NOTES

Heloise W. Travis Dunstan '49, '59 died recently at the age of 90. She had a 40-year career as a teacher in the Wayne-Westland school district.

Mary Lou Durbin '52, '60, '66 is still active as a teacher after more than 50 years in the classroom. Her career has been spent in the Garden City school district, with special interests in reading and in special education. In addition to her three degrees from EMU, she holds the Ph.D. from UM, computer credentials from Schoolcraft College, and she has recently explored pursuing additional credentials in reading.

Letitia J. Byrd '70 will receive the EMU Distinguished Alumnus Award in ceremonies at Eagle Crest on April 27.

Stanley Heath '88 was recently named head basketball coach at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Heath, who prepared as a secondary social studies teacher at EMU and who later earned a master's in sports administration at WSU, served as an assistant coach at Hillsdale College, Albion College, WSU, Bowling Green State University, and MSU. Most recently, he has been head basketball coach at Kent State University. He was a three-year letterman in basketball at EMU during his undergraduate years.

Andrew L. Lindsay '94, '97, '02 will receive the EMU Outstanding Young Alumnus Award in ceremonies at Eagle Crest on April 27.

COE CREDIT HOURS

As of April 11, COE credit hours for Winter were 7.00% ahead of final figures for last Winter (which were 4.3% ahead of the previous Winter and 17.7% over Winter 1999). This includes an increase in all units. For the fiscal year to date (Summer, Fall, Winter), the COE is 6.52% ahead of the same time last year, including an 11.6% increase in Student Teaching and a 10.3% increase in Teacher Education. Including those Spring term enrollments already received, the COE is 4% ahead of final figures for last fiscal year.

SPONSORED PROJECTS

As of the end of March, the number of proposals submitted for external funding during this fiscal year by COE faculty and staff members was 28, a 75% increase over the same time last year. The number of awards received stood at 24, a 50% increase over the same time last year. This is likely to be a record-breaking year for the COE in terms of proposals and awards. To date, the COE has received $1,753,389.

DEVELOPMENT REPORT

As of the end of March, private-sector donations to the College of Education amounted to $445,828, a substantial increase over end-of-the year totals for recent years and one of the best years ever for the COE.

This total includes $257,457 that has been donated to various college and department expendable accounts, $107,370 that has been donated to various scholarship funds, $18,584 donated to various endowment funds, $2,452 in gifts-in-kind, and $2,175 to expendable scholarship funds.

DISTANCE LEARNING LABORATORY

The COE's Distance Learning Laboratory, located inside the Bonisteel Computer Laboratory suite, second floor of the Porter Building, is fully functional and accepting space and time reservations for future terms. The laboratory supports two-way video, including appropriate supporting computer and media hardware. To book class or meeting times, for training, or for additional information, contact Marina McCormack. Potential users are expected to demonstrate proficiency or attend a training session.

NCATE/STATE REVIEW DATES SET

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education has announced that the next site visit for EMU (which will include representatives of the Michigan Department of Education as well) will occur on November 15-19, 2003. Faculty members and administrators are requested to be on campus during those days.

SHORT NOTES

World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP). The COE will host the meeting of the Executive Board of the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP) on April 19-21. Representatives will be present from Nigeria, Switzerland, Chile, Columbia, Singapore, and the U.S.A.

Community College Dialogue. Lansing Community College, the Michigan Department of Career Development, and the Michigan Department of Education are sponsoring "a day of dialogue" on "The Role of Community Colleges in Teacher Preparation" at the Holiday Inn West in Lansing on April 19. Technology Conference. Sponsored by the College of Education, the first (probably annual) Technology Conference will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Various tracks/strands during the day will include such topics as HPERD, teaching with technology, leadership, COATT, teacher education, special education, etc. If you have a suggestion for a workshop or a featured speaker, please contact coetechsig@online.emich.edu.

Call for Reviewers. The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has issued a call for reviewers of papers for the 2003 AACTE annual meeting. Forms are available in each COE office or from AACTE Reviews, 1307 New York Ave., NW, Suite 300, Washington, DC 20005-4701. The deadline for submission is May 17.

Call for Papers. The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has issued a call for papers for the 2003 annual meeting, to be held in New Orleans, LA. The deadline is June 3. For additional information, see www.aacte.org.

AACTE participation is strongly encouraged. The dean's office will cover the travel expenses to the 2003 AACTE convention of one person per accepted presentation.

Program Review. As part of the EMU program review process, there will be open sessions for interested parties in a series of roundtable discussions. The teacher education programs of each of these departments will be included in these discussions. All sessions are scheduled for Halle 300, 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. The calendar includes Chemistry, April 23; Psychology, May 14; and HPERD, May 21.

COE COUNCIL MEETING

The College of Education Council met on April 10, with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding.

The Council endorsed a recommendation of the Basic Programs Committee to change the name of the "Industrial-Vocational Education" program to "Vocational Education." The Council reviewed the draft materials for the ITEA/CTTE folio from Technology Education, along with the findings/recommendations of the Basic Programs Committee. Several recommendations were made to the Technology Education program, with a request that revisions be submitted to the COE Council by May 1.

The Council considered a recommendation from the Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee to approve two new courses in Social Work-SWRK 602 Community Building and SWRK 694 Community Action Seminar. Both courses were endorsed.

Various reports were received. The Council reviewed the status of the various draft program folios and set a next meeting date of Wednesday, April 17, 2:00 p.m. to review materials expected from the Basic Programs Committee and the Advanced Programs Committee.

STUDENT NOTES

Sara L. Terrell has been awarded $461 from the Graduate Student Research Support Fund to cover costs associated with her thesis project "Neuromuscular Training Techniques as a Preventive for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Female Athletes."
