FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

A new journal-The Journal for Effective Schools-is advertising that the inaugural issue will contain an article by Charles M. Achilles.

Julianne O'Brien Pedersen performed at Pinckney High School on April 27 as a culmination of a residency between the high school and the Peter Sparling Dance Company.

Jerry Robbins and doctoral fellow Ron Flowers attended a meeting in Lansing called by the Michigan Department of Education to plan a process for state wide follow-up of new teachers.

Peggy Moore-Hart has been awarded $1,690 from the Graduate Studies and Research Support Fund. This will provide equipment, books, and transcription costs related to her project "Illuminating Diversity Through a Pre-Service Outreach Project."

Valerie Polakow, with Marjorie Ziefert (Center for Child and Family Programs), conducted a study and compiled the results which are the basis of a report on affordable child care for EMU students. This report and recommendations have been presented to the EMU Cabinet.

President Kirkpatrick has appointed the following COE persons to "crosscutting" committees as part of the next cycle of university strategic planning: Alane Starko, chair, and Jeff Armstrong, member, "the graduate experience"; Dibya Choudhuri and Helen Ditzhazy, members, "international initiatives and programming"; Dale Rice, member, "public engagement and linkages"; Jeff Schulz, member, "institutes, centers and interdisciplinary research planning; and Don Bennion and Susan McCarthy, members, "the undergraduate experience."

Deborah Harmon is one of the instructors for the EMU Summer Institute on Curriculum Diversity.

Pat Sullivan graduated from EMU in recent ceremonies. A reception was held in her honor last week in the COE Office of Academic Services.

Samira Moosa, (Sultan Qaboos University, Oman), Stuart Karabenick (EMU-CRS) and Leah Adams, emeritus, are authors of "Teacher Perceptions of Arab Parent Involvement in Elementary Schools." This article appeared in The School-Community Journal, Fall/Winter 2001. Moosa was a COE Fulbright Scholar in 2000-2001.

Leah Adams, emeritus, was in Skokie, Illinois last week for the Spring board meetings of the U.S. National Committee of OMEP, World Organization for Early Childhood Education.

Jack Minzey, emeritus, will speak on "The Future Direction of Education" at the May 10 meeting of the local chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. The event is at 6:00 p.m. in the Main Lounge of McKenny Union. For reservations, jbartz@mich.com.

AMERITECH NEW TEACHER RESOURCE NETWORK

The award by Ameritech to the College of Education to support the "New Teacher Resource Network" was featured in "Syllabus News, Resources, Trends," an on-line newsletter. The project also received publicity in the Ann Arbor News. On campus, it has been recognized on the EMU home page on the Web and in Focus EMU.

The Network partnership is intended to use online resources to support student teachers and beginning teachers through access to high-quality instructional information resources, provide support and training from technology and expert teaching mentors, and provide opportunities to share experiences with each other.

SHORT NOTES

Call for Reviewers. The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has issued a call for reviewers of papers for the 2003 AACTE annual meeting. Forms are available in each COE office or from AACTE Reviews, 1307 New York Ave., NW, Suite 300, Washington, DC 20005-4701. The deadline for submission is May 17.

Call for Papers. The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has issued a call for papers for the 2003 annual meeting, to be held in New Orleans, LA. The deadline is June 3. For additional information, see www.aacte.org. AACTE participation is highly encouraged. The dean's office will support convention travel expenses for one person per accepted presentation.

Program Review. As part of the EMU program review process, there are open sessions for interested parties in a series of roundtable discussions. The teacher education programs of each of these departments will be included in the discussions. All sessions are scheduled for Halle 300, 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. These include Psychology, May 14; and HPERD, May 21.

ALUMNI NOTES

Esther Williams '65, principal of Coolidge Elementary School in Livonia, will retire next month after 49 years in public schools.

Diane Keller '83 is the education coordinator for the Ypsilanti Area Chamber of Commerce. She was previously director of the Ypsilanti visitors and Convention Bureau.

Dave Phillips '83 is the new principal of Centennial Middle School in the South Lyon district.

At the April 27 EMU Alumni Awards dinner, not only was Andrew Lindsay '94, '97, '02 recognized with the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, and Letitia J. Byrd '70 recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, but another COE connection was brought out. Arthur J. Timko '68, '68, '71, who also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award, has "made his mark" in public radio, especially through WEMU, but he was originally prepared as a teacher.

STUDENT NOTES

Joseph Thomas will defend his dissertation "A Comparative Study of Peace Officers Basic Training and Their Actual Job Experience" on June 12 at 1:00 p.m. in Porter 304. Helen Ditzhazy is the chair. The public is invited.

Three sisters, Renae Holtz, Karen Mayes, and Sara Gregg are all prospective special education teachers. They are all health education minors and are taking at least one class together this term.

TECHNOLOGY

As a result of the recent "Day in the Life of the College of Education" photographic event, almost 600 digital images and many rolls of film were received. Expect to see displays soon!

Do you have "retired" educational technology (film strips and projectors, slide rules, classroom record players, early computers, etc.) that you would be willing to make available for a display that will run until the end of the Fall semester? If so, contact bfilipiak@online.emich.edu.

COE CREDIT HOURS

As of April 25, with incomplete registrations for the Spring term, College of Education credit hours for the fiscal year were already 5.6% ahead of final credit hours for last fiscal year. These include an 11.7% increase in Student Teaching, an 8.2% increase in Teacher Education, a 4.8% increase in HPERD, a 0.02% increase in Special Education, and a 2.4% decrease in Leadership and Counseling.

SPONSORED PROJECTS

As of the end of April, the number of proposals submitted by COE faculty and staff members was 36, an 89% increase over the same time last year. The dollars requested are 36% ahead of the same time last year. As of the end of April, 25 awards had been received, a 39% increase over the same time last year, in the amount of $1,778,389.

THE 'HOT' JOBS

A recent issue of Time identified a list of "hot jobs" for the first decade of this century. Leading the list was "K-12 teachers," with a notation that 711,000 additional teaching positions would become available. Others on the list included "health therapists" (145,000 additional jobs) and "recreation and fitness workers" (118,000 additional jobs).
