FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

Alane Starko's column "Extensive Pedagogy Training Essential to Teacher Education" appeared in the back cover "debate" section of the Spring 2002 issue of the "Michigan Education Report," a publication of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

John Tonkovich recently served as a medical rehabilitation surveyor at the largest children's specialty rehabilitation hospital in the U.S., in Mountainside, NJ, for CARF, the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission.

Don Staub is in Atlanta, GA, representing the COE at an AACTE national conference on building K-12/teacher education partnerships related to the provisions of the "Leave No Child Behind" Act.

Lynne Rocklage was at the Michigan Virtual University headquarters in East Lansing last week attending a meeting of the Autism Collaborative. Tuesday, she will be in Lansing attending the Aspire Higher Conference of the ACE and Michigan Women's Leadership.

Julianne O'Brien Pedersen danced in the Performance Network's annual Tree Town Festival in Ann Arbor, May 29-June 2.

ALUMNI NOTES

Bill Bushaw '79, '81, the chief academic officer of the Michigan Department of Education, is leaving that position to become Director of Learning Systems for Merit Network, Inc. in Ann Arbor.

Jackie Flores '84, a special education teacher at Ypsilanti High School, received the 2002 "coach of the year" award for the Washtenaw County Special Olympics program. Flores and her work were featured in a recent article in the Ann Arbor News.

SHORT NOTES

Nominations are open for USA Today's All-USA Teacher Team, honoring K-12 individuals and instructional teams. Nominations are due June 29. Additional information is available at http://www.usatoday.com/life/academic/teachteam2002.htm.

The SINO-American Education Consortium (formerly the USA-SINO Teacher Education Consortium), of which the COE is a member, has issued a call for papers for the forthcoming international conference. The deadline is August 10. For information, see http://www.kennesaw.edu/sino-american/

COE CREDIT HOURS

As of June 2, for the first time in many years, COE credit hours for the Spring term exceeded 10,000. This represents a 3.05% increase over final figures for last Spring. For the fiscal year, the COE is 6.18% ahead of final credit hour figures for the previous fiscal year, including a 12% increase for Student Teaching, a 9% increase for Teacher Education, a 5% increase for HPERD, a 1.5% increase for Special Education, and a 0.59% decrease for Leadership and Counseling.

RENAISSANCE GROUP FELLOWSHIPS

The Renaissance Group has announced the competition for two $5,000 faculty fellowships for the coming year. Applications are due August 1.

All EMU faculty members are eligible to apply. Awardees are expected to define and work on a single scholarship project that addresses research issues that emerge from The Renaissance Group Principles. Projects that meet all other selection criteria and call for scholarship from two or more Renaissance institutions will receive higher priority.

Shawn Quilter and Lisa Frankes have each held one of these Fellowships in recent times. A brochure with additional information is available in each COE department office.
