FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

Gary Navarre has been selected to review proposals for the next convention of the Council for Exceptional Children, to be held in Seattle.

Martha Tack was recently named state coordinator for the Michigan-American Council on Education (ACE) Network for Women Leaders in Higher Education. 

 ALUMNI NOTES

Gaylord Roy Grandy '67 of Owosso died recently.  He was a former teacher of mathematics in Corunna and in Stockridge.  However, for some years he was a charter bus driver.

Edward Schultz ' 67, '71 is the new superintendent for the Rogers City area schools.

John D. White '72 is the new superintendent for the Highland Park school district.

Sheila Light ' 72, '86, '96 is the new principal at Pleasant Ridge Elementary School in Saline.  She is coming to Saline from the Northside Child Development Center in Niles.

Saline High School  assistant  principal Jean Britton '80 is leaving that position to serve as director of the South and West Washtenaw Consortium, which includes Dexter, Chelsea, Manchester, Milan, and Saline.

Dennis Stratton '81, '87 is the new superintendent of the Posen Consolidated school district.

David Raft ' 92, assistant principal at Heritage Elementary School in Saline, will become the principal at the new Harvest Elementary School in Saline.

SHORT NOTES

The Renaissance Group has announced the competition for two $5,000 faculty fellowships for the coming year.  Applications are due August 1.   Information brochures are in each COE department.

The deadline for paper proposals for the  SINO-American Education is August 10.  For information, see http://www.kennesaw.edu/sino-american/ Materials related to academic service-learning in K-12 schools, developed by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) and the National Service-Learning in Teacher Education Partnership, have been received and placed in the Educational Resource Center.

COE CREDIT HOURS

As of June 16, COE credit hours for the COE for Spring were 3.03% ahead of final figures for last Spring.  This brings fiscal year credit hours to 6.17% above final figures for last fiscal year.  We are already 5.10% above final figures for last Summer.  There were 26,158 credit hours posted for the Fall semester.

DEVELOPMENT REPORT

As of May 31, $462,958 had been donated to the COE this fiscal year.  This includes $110,775 to various scholarship accounts and $261,284 to various expendable accounts.  The total compares with $187,669 this time a year ago and $338,202 this time two years ago.   More than $10,000 will be available to the COE for next fiscal year in income from the COE endowment.

STUDENT NOTES

Nelson Maylone will defend his dissertation "The Relationship of Socioeconomic Factors and District Scores on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program Tests: An Analysis" on June 24 at 11:00 a.m. in Room 301 C/D of the Porter Building.  Helen Ditzhazy is the chairperson.  The public is invited to attend the session.

Shawn Davis, a prospective elementary teacher, was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News.  Davis is a teacher's aide at Ann Arbor's Lawton Elementary School.  He works another part-time job and attends EMU classes at night.

SPONSORED PROJECTS

As of the end of May, the number of proposals submitted by COE faculty/staff for the year stood at 37, a 61% increase over the same time last year.  The amount of dollars requested was 32% ahead of the same time last year.  To date, 27 awards have been received, a 50% increase over the same time last year.  These awards are in the amount of $1,825,804. 

COATT SUMMER WORKSHOP

The COATT Summer Technology Workshop for student teachers, cooperating teachers, and university supervisors will be held on June 25, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Porter Building.  There is no charge, but registration is required.  The event includes lunch.  For additional information, see http://www.coatt.org/
