FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Don Bennion (with Associate Provost Michael Harris) presented "Preparing the University Assessment Program for a Visit from its Regional Accreditation Agency" at the 2002 American Association of Higher Education assessment conference in Boston.
John Tonkovich recently served as a medical rehabilitation surveyor at an outpatient rehabilitation center for children in Erie, PA for CARF, the Rehabilitation Commission.
Don Bennion's article "When Discussing Assessment, We Need to Define Our Terms" was published in the May-June 2002 issue of Assessment Update.
Jerry Robbins is in Washington, D.C. today and tomorrow participating in a meeting of the Nominations Committee of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
This past weekend the Detroit Tigers celebrated the Negro Baseball League. Eddie Bedford was a consultant to the Tigers Public Relations Department. In addition, he was interviewed by Kaye Byrd of the Inside Detroit (WCHB) morning talk show and by John Mason of Mason in the Morning talk radio program (KISS 102.7).
Last Friday, Vic Chiasson coordinated the 17th annual tug of war across the Detroit River between U.S. and Canadian teams.
Jerry Robbins and Jon Margerum-Leys recently performed with the Barnhill Concert/Ypsilanti Community Band in concert in Ypsilanti's Recreation Park.
The following promotions were announced at the recent meeting of the EMU Board of Regents: to professor: Jim Berry, Kathleen Conley, Sylvia Jones; to associate professor: David Anderson, Elizabeth Broughton, Lisa Frankes, Suzanne Hobson; to assistant professor: Jodi Johnson.
COE ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES
Ian Haslam has been named as Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Haslam comes to EMU from a position as visiting professor in the Department of Kinesiology at CSU Fresno.
Prior to his CSU Fresno appointment, he was the Head of Public Relations and International Affairs at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. In Singapore, he was formerly the Associate Dean of the School of Physical Education. Previous positions were at the University of Western Ontario, Brock University, and the University of Regina.
Haslam holds the Certificate of Education (Distinction) from the Madeley College of Education, Staffordshire, England; the B.Ed. (Honours) from the same institution; the M.A. in sport management from the University of Alberta; the Ed.D. from SUNY Buffalo; and the M.B.A. from the University of Birmingham, England.
He is a prolific author and conference presenter, with special interests in physical education, sport, and coaching. He is an accomplished squash player and soccer player and coach.
Jim Berry has been named Interim Associate Dean, replacing Carolyn Finch. Finch has assumed a position teaching reading in the Department of Teacher Education. Jackie Tracy will continue as the Interim Head of the Department of Leadership and Counseling.
Shawn Quilter has been named Interim Assistant Dean (Advising) for the College of Education.
ALUMNI NOTES
Arthur Lieder '42, '43, of Cheboygan, died recently at age 81. Trained as a teacher, his World War II experience sent him into engineering and he had a long career with Ford Motor Company.
Carol Fanning '99, a special education teacher with endorsement in POHI, was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News for her work at Mott Children's Hospital. She works with patients in their rooms or in the schoolroom at the hospital.
SHORT NOTES
The Renaissance Group has announced the competition for two $5,000 faculty fellowships for the coming year. Applications are due August 1. Information brochures are in each COE department.

COE CREDIT HOURS
As of June 22, COE credit hours for Spring are 3.52% above final figures for last Spring. For the fiscal year, credit hours are 6.23% ahead of final figures for last fiscal year. Credit hours for Summer are already 9% above final figures for last Summer.
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT BOARD
The College of Education Resource Development Board met last Wednesday. The majority of the discussion was focused on fund-raising for scholarships for prospective teachers.
