ASHA REACCREDITATION RECEIVED
EMU's graduate program in speech-language pathology has been fully reaccredited for the next eight-year cycle, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's (ASHA) Council on Academic Accreditation.
An earlier probationary status has been removed as there is now a full complement of faculty, including a full-time Ph.D. audiologist, and program revisions have been completed.
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Julianne O'Brien Pedersen contributed to the "Narrow Flame" and "Requiem for a Virtual Man" dances in Peter Sparling's "Bodytalk" performance as part of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival.
Karen Paciorek and Jerry Robbins ran into each other in the AACTE headquarters in Washington a few days ago, neither knowing the other was going to be there.
ALUMNI NOTES
Steve Koponen '93, one of four 2002 Michigan winners of the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards, was recently in Los Angeles to receive his $25,000 check. He was one of 120 educators honored from across the country. Koponen, who teaches at O.E. Dunckel Middle School in Farmington Hills, is EMU's 22nd known recipient of the Milken Award.
STUDENT NOTES
Eric Lemkin will defend his thesis "A Comparison of Super Slow Motion Versus Traditional Speed Resistance Training on Strength and Body Composition in Moderately Active Individuals" on July 10 at 10:00 a.m. in 318 Porter. Jeff Armstrong is the chair.
James Satterfield will defend his dissertation on "African American Higher Education: A Story of Institutionalized Racism" on July 12 at 9:30 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C. Jaclynn Tracy is the chair.
SHORT NOTES
The Renaissance Group has announced the competition for two $5,000 faculty fellowships. Applications are due August 1. Information brochures are in each COE department. COE faculty members have held this award the past two years.

COE CREDIT HOURS
As of June 29, COE credit hours for Spring are 3.79% above final figures for last Spring. For FY02, credit hours are 6.26% ahead of final figures for the previous year. Credit hours for Summer are 9.79% above final figures for last Summer.
SPONSORED PROJECTS
During the fiscal year just ended, COE faculty and staff members submitted 41 proposals, an all-time high and 41% above the previous fiscal year. COE faculty and staff members received 28 awards, another all-time high, up 40% above the previous year. The amount received was $1,848,304. There are 12 proposals pending for $2.5 million, many of which have good prospects for funding.
INITIAL PROGRAM ADMISSIONS
Based on formal admissions to the EMU initial teacher preparation program through May (11 months), it was projected that the COE would process 1,622 applications (an all-time high) to the initial teacher preparation program during the fiscal year just ended and admit 1,430 (an all-time high) of those persons. This is a 13% increase over the previous fiscal year.
The 367 men admitted represents a 21% increase over the previous fiscal year. The 508 post-baccalaureate students (persons who already hold a bachelor's degree or, in many cases, one or more graduate or professional degrees) represent an 18% increase over the previous fiscal year. The 145 minority persons admitted represent a 16% increase over the previous fiscal year.
Of those admitted, 44% are prospective elementary teachers, 33% are prospective secondary teachers, 10% are prospective K-12 grades teachers, and 11% are prospective special education teachers.
Approximately 19% of the prospective elementary teachers are also seeking endorsement in early childhood education.
Within secondary, the number of admissions in mathematics and the physical sciences are at or near all-time highs. Within K-12, the number in technology education is unusually high. Special education admissions are up 10%.
