DEVELOPMENT REPORT
For the fiscal year recently ended, $476,498 was donated to the College of Education. Among the EMU colleges, this amount was second only to that contributed to COAS. The total amount is the second largest ever for giving to the COE, and it considerably exceeds last year's $198,867 and FY2000's $357,211.
Of the total, $261,982 is in the "expendable" category. This includes a gift of $157,001 to "market" programs of the COE (cultivated by Jackie Tracy) and a gift of $75,000 from Ameritech for technology enhancements involving student teachers, university supervisors, and cooperating teachers. Other large expendable gifts included $10,000 to the Department of Leadership and Counseling and $14,775 in undesignated gifts through the annual fund. An additional $2,175 was donated for expendable scholarships.
Various endowment funds in the COE received $18,671 during the year, including $6,671 to the COE general endowment fund.
A total of $121,195 was donated to 24 scholarship accounts, in amounts ranging from $41,000 to $50. The "event/expensed" category received $69,273. There were gifts-in-kind donated in the amount of $3,203.
STUDENT NOTES
Anna Elizabeth Schlecte, a major in education of the mentally impaired, was recently inducted into membership in the Golden Key International Honor Society.
COE CREDIT HOURS
As of July 6, near-final semester credit hour totals for the COE for Spring term were 4% above final figures for Spring 2001. For the fiscal year just ended, July 6 totals for the COE are 88,692-a 6.29% increase over the previous fiscal year total and the second largest number ever.
Summer 2002 credit hours are 9.49% above last summer, including increases in all four departments.

INITIAL PROGRAM ADMISSIONS
During the fiscal year just ended, we processed 1,630 applications (an all-time high) to the EMU initial teacher preparation program and we admitted 1,438 (an all-time high) of those persons. This is a 14% increase over last fiscal year.
We admitted 371 men. This is a 21% increase over the previous fiscal year. The portion of the admissions cohort that is male-25.8%-is the highest since 1997-98. We admitted 150 known minority persons. This is a 20% increase over last fiscal year. The portion of the admissions cohort that is minority-10.7%-is the highest since such records have been kept.
We admitted 534 post-baccalaureate students. This is a 24% increase over last fiscal year. This large number of "non-traditional" seekers of initial teacher certification makes EMU one of the largest (if not the largest) providers of services to the non-traditional audience of prospective teachers in the country.
Of those admitted, 45% are prospective elementary teachers, 34% are prospective secondary teachers, 10% are prospective K-12 grades teachers, and 10% are prospective special education teachers.
Admissions are up in almost all of the "high demand" teaching fields.
