REACCREDITATION FOR HEARING IMPAIRED PROGRAMING
Informal word has been received of the reaccreditation of EMU's programing in hearing impaired by the Council on Education of the Deaf. Gayle Nash and Kathleen Quinn have been instrumental in bringing this to successful closure.
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Janet Balowski recently returned from a two-week trip to France, Germany, and The Netherlands, serving as a volunteer certified athletic trainer with two high school all-star baseball teams and a softball team. She also presented lectures on sports nutrition, strength and conditioning for adolescent athletes, and preventing upper extremity injuries in baseball and softball athletes.
Ellen Hoffman (with William Arms, Jeanne Narum, and Ed Fox) presented "National SMETE Digital Library: From Prototype to Production to Transformational National Resource" at the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries in Portland, OR.
"Teacher Knowledge of Educational Technology: A Case Study of Student/Mentor Teacher Pairs," by Jon Margerum-Leys (with Ron Marx, UM) has been accepted for the Journal of Educational Computing Research.
Ron Williamson was in Chicago at the Principals' Partnership Summer Leadership Institute sponsored by Union Pacific. Williamson worked with Chicago high school principals on using data to improve student achievement and for school improvement.
Lizbeth Stevens attended two back-to-back conferences in Nashville, TN. The first was a one-day workshop on fluency disorders (i.e., stuttering) in children. This was followed by the three-day ASHA Schools Conference. While there, she attended a meeting of the ASHA SEALS (state education advocacy leaders), a position she holds for Michigan. She assisted with a display of materials produced to support IDEA.
Jon Margerum-Leys is in California today, the featured presenter at the UC-Santa Barbara's South Coast Writing Project (SCWriP) Technology and Writing Institute. He will be addressing K-12 teachers from Ventura to San Luis Obispo.
Peggy Moore-Hart has recently conducted the annual "Writer's Camp" for area elementary children. This year's theme focused on the Willow Run Airport and the Yankee Air Museum.
The most recent issue of EMU's "Eastern Edge" alumni publication included articles on the gift of Leah Adams (emeritus) and her husband Tim to support graduate research in early childhood; the award from Ameritech to support the COE's New Teacher Resource Network; and the MARS (Minority Achievement, Retention and Success) program conducted by Carolyn Finch (Deborah Harmon was pictured).
Jon Margerum-Leys was the guest conductor for the first half of last Thursday's Candy Cane Park concert of the Barnhill Concert/Ypsilanti Community Band. Jerry Robbins conducted the second half. Both Margerum-Leys and Robbins were featured in instrumental ensembles during the concert.
Students of Beth Johnson were pictured and featured in an Ann Arbor News story recently as they dressed as "burnouts, rebels, or outcasts" to gauge reaction on campus and in the community.
Retired faculty member Beverly Geltner was pictured in the Ann Arbor News, testifying (in anguish) before a local school board hearing.
STUDENT NOTES
Dale Ranson will defend his dissertation, "Analysis of the Effects of a Public School Developmental Kindergarten Program on Student Outcomes," today, at 9:30 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C. Charles Achilles is the chairperson. The public is invited.
Hillary Glowski, a prospective special education teacher (emotionally impaired), is the EMU student body president. Glowski is also the recipient of a Martha Horton Ramsey scholarship for Fall 2002.
Heather Copi, a prospective elementary/early childhood teacher, was featured recently in the Monroe Evening News. The story was about her experiences in preparing to be a teacher through EMU.
Lauri Rowley, Larry Kendzie, and Liz Mayfield were recently featured on EMU's web home page. All are present/prospective technology teachers in the area. Rebecca Tapia and Cheryl Zalba are featured on the current version of the home page.
Kappa Delta Pi chapter officers for the year are Alison Billings, president; Chris Webb, executive vice president; Elizabeth Beaudoin, vice president of undergraduate affairs; Hollie Rowe, vice president of graduate affairs; Susan Arslanian, secretary; David Rodgers, treasurer; Nami Nielipinski, historian; Megan Klein, foundation representative; Sarah Glasco, public relations chair; and Tricia Rodgers, webmaster. Thomas Gwaltney is the longtime counselor.
Amy Feldkamp, prospective music teacher, was guest conductor for one number at the recent Candy Cane Park concert of the Barnhill Concert/Ypsilanti Community Band. Feldkamp, concert master of the EMU orchestra, will be featured electric fiddle soloist with the band on the next concert. The next concert will also feature prospective elementary teacher Cara Jasiolek, who is the featured twirler with the EMU marching band.
ALUMNI NOTES
Alene Constance Steinbach, age 93, died recently in Chelsea. After receiving her teaching certificate from The Normal, she taught at the Townline, Worden, and Parker Schools. She was a longtime substitute teacher in the Chelsea schools.
Bradley Hamilton '77, '82, '94 is the new superintendent of the Grass Lake district.
Richard Naughton '84, '89 is the new superintendent of the Addison Community Schools.
Alums featured in the most recent issue of the EMU "Eastern Edge" alumni publication include Andrew Lindsey '94, '97, '02, teacher in the Van Buren schools and recipient of the 2002 EMU Outstanding Young Alumnus Award; Letitia J. Byrd '70, retired Ann Arbor teacher and recipient of the 2002 EMU Distinguished Alumnus Award; and 13 alums who are principals of schools that received a Golden Apple award from the state.

COE COUNCIL MEETING
The College of Education Council met on July 24, with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding.
Upon recommendation of the Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee, the Council endorsed the approval of a non-teaching major in Japanese Language and Culture and changes in ATM 302 Fashion Manufacturing Techniques and ATM 392 Pattern Design.
The Council also approved changes in the following courses: SPSI 508, 568, 607, 620, 624, and 694.
The Council reviewed and approved the core materials for "science" for submission to NCATE in September, subject to editorial review. The Council also reviewed and approved revisions in the computer science materials that had been made since an earlier review. There was also a review and approval of materials that had been prepared for the advanced program in physical education.
The Council received from the dean a status report related to the web posting of materials that are due to NCATE and NCATE-affiliated organizations by September 15. (As materials are posted, they may be viewed at http://www.emich.edu/coe/ncate/2003/Docs/G-10/nprogstnds.html)
The Council will not meet again until after the start of the Fall semester.

The Renaissance Group has announced the competition for two $5,000 faculty fellowships. Applications are due August 1. Information brochures are in each COE department. COE faculty members have held this award the past two years.
