FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Ron Williamson's article, "Building Bridges: Increased Trust and Understanding Between School Administrators and School Counselors," was published in a recent issue of the AASA Professor.
Lizbeth Stevens' article, "Incorporating Academic Service-Learning into an AAC Curriculum," was published in the ASHA Special Interest Division 10 "Newsletter."
Elizabeth Broughton was instrumental in obtaining grants from the DTE Energy Foundation and the Michigan Humanities Council of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs to support activities of the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival 2002.
Beth Johnson reports from Traverse City that her graduate students re-enacted the landing on Ellis Island by immigrants-using a real boat and experiencing turbulent water and motion sickness. They also constructed costumes, simulated language difficulties, and endured unfortunate food and sleeping problems.
Ron Saunders '63 (emeritus) is a member of the Grand Rapids Barbershop Chorus. This group has been selected to participate in international competition next month in Portland, OR against 20 other such ensembles from elsewhere in the U.S., Sweden, China, Australia, and Canada.
ALUMNI NOTES
Helen E. Baker '36 died recently in Chelsea. She was a former teacher of home economics in the Milan schools.
Harold Simons '68, '70, was named to the Huron High School River Rat Hall of Fame. As a high school student, he lettered in three sports and received all state honors in basketball. At EMU, he was captain of the basketball team, later serving as an assistant basketball coach and head golf coach. In 1977, he became basketball coach at Huron High School and had a highly successful record over 22 years in that position. Since 1981 he has coached golf at Huron High School.
Lawrence Hood '97, an assistant principal at a Detroit charter school, has produced a rap CD, "School Bus Rap," designed to teach history, math, science, and morals to elementary-age children.

September 2 is the deadline for applying for the position of Director of Undergraduate Studies and for the position of interim Director of the Honors Program. September 12 is the deadline for application for various AACTE awards. See "Calls for Papers/Proposals" below for additional information.
A "Program Review Workshop" will be held on September 27 for the Department of Teacher Education. Members of the faculty are encouraged to attend. The session will be in Halle 300, 9:00-11:00 a.m.
The MACTE Fall Conference will be held on October 4 at the Kellogg Center at MSU.
November 15 is the deadline for applications for the Provost's Research Support Fund for New (1st or 2nd year) Faculty. Awards are typically in the $2,500-$5,000 range.
Awards in the $300-$2,000 range are made monthly through the Graduate School Research Support Fund. All faculty members are eligible.
COE CREDIT HOURS
For the 2002 Summer term, COE credit hour production is almost 12% higher than for Summer 2001, including a 25% increase for HPERD and a 15% increase for Teacher Education.
Fall 2002 credit hours for the COE are already within about 10% of last Fall's final figures, although three departments are already within 2-4% of last Fall's final figures. It is highly likely that credit hours in the COE for 2002-2003 will set an all-time high record.
