FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Jerry Robbins' article, "Drops in the Bucket: One Institution's Efforts in Urban Education," appeared in the Spring/Summer issue of Teacher Education and Practice.
Mary Rearick recently participated in the ASCD training workshop, "Understanding by Design," held in Boston.
Gary Banks presented "New Legal Developments in Physical Education and Athletic Coaching" in Troy to an athletic coaches' conference sponsored by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
Michael Beebe, Valerie Polakow, and Eboni Zamani served this past year on the university's Human Subjects Review committee.
Jerry Robbins conducted the Barnhill Concert/Ypsilanti Community Band in concert during the Heritage Festival last Saturday. Jon Margerum-Leys guest conducted two numbers. Amy Feldkamp, concertmaster of the EMU orchestra and music education major, was the featured jazz fiddle soloist on one number with the band. Cara Jasiolek, longtime featured twirler with the EMU marching band and a prospective elementary teacher, performed a twirling exhibition during the concert. The Ypsilanti Community Band will change its administrative home to Washtenaw Community College, effective with the fall term.
Service anniversaries have been announced for the following persons: Irene Allen, 34 years; Nancy Dahl, 32 years; Judy Williston, 31 years; and Jean Rauch, 30 years. Twenty-five year service anniversaries are being celebrated by Mary Bigler, Gayle Nash, and Roberta Anderson. Ten year anniversaries are being celebrated by Yvonne Callaway, Jackie Tracy, and Jane Gordon.
ALUMNI NOTES
John Gardiner '60, '66 is retired from his position as superintendent of the East Detroit schools, in which he served his entire career as English teacher, high school principal, and in other administrative positions. Gardiner has been in the news in recent times in connection with financial irregularities in the district.
Bob Bullock '76 has retired from his position as principal of Lindbom School in Brighton. He has been replaced by L. Kay Short. Short comes to the position from serving as an instructional facilitator in Lenawee County's Hudson Area Schools.
Kirk Hobson '92 is a new assistant principal at Brighton High School. He formerly served as director of the Renaissance alternative high school at the Livingston Educational Service Agency. He replaces Cheryl Deford '90, '93, who moved out of the district.

September 2 is the deadline for applying for the position of Director of Undergraduate Studies and for the position of interim Director of the Honors Program. September 12 is the deadline for application for various AACTE awards. See "Calls for Papers/Proposals" below for additional information.
A "Program Review Workshop" will be held on September 27 for the Department of Teacher Education. Members of the faculty are encouraged to attend. The session will be in Halle 300, 9:00-11:00 a.m.
The MACTE Fall Conference will be held on October 4 at the Kellogg Center at MSU.
November 15 is the deadline for applications for the Provost's Research Support Fund for New (1st or 2nd year) Faculty. Awards are typically in the $2,500-$5,000 range.
Awards in the $300-$2,000 range are made monthly through the Graduate School Research Support Fund. All faculty members are eligible.
The Department of Geography & Geology and the Institute for Geospatial Research and Education (IGTE) are seeking up to 15 faculty, administrators and staff at EMU to teach GIS (Geographic Information Systems) skills for classroom, school-based or research use. Three on campus, eight hour Saturday modules will be offered during September and October. Participants will receive software. Call Chris Mayda, 4877856, or cmayda@online.emich.edu.
