FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
John Tonkovich recently served as a CARF medical rehabilitation surveyor for a hospital program in Miami, FL. CARF is an international accreditation body for rehabilitation programs.
Q.S. Samonte (emeritus) recently had accepted for publication "Oh, Yes, I Have Been to Honolulu" for Filipinas magazine, a U.S. publication. The article is a parody on the knowledge of American teachers about world geography.
Fran Herrick Swailes, age 93, died recently in Lapeer. She was director of EMU's occupational therapy program from 1950-1975. Prior to the creation of the College of Health and Human Services, occupational therapy was part of the College of Education.
ALUMNI NOTES
Olive Jane Lockwood '38, age 85, died recently in Ann Arbor. She taught in the Melvindale schools, followed by work at the Ypsilanti Chamber of Commerce, Larue Insurance Agency, and as an editor at the University of Michigan.
Lillian R. Standen '45, age 80, died recently in St. Joseph. She was a special education and elementary teacher at Willow Run, Fairplain, Pier, Benton Harbor, and St. Joseph.
SHORT NOTES
September 2 is the deadline for applying for the position of Director of Undergraduate Studies and for the position of interim Director of the Honors Program. September 12 is the deadline for application for various AACTE awards. See "Calls for Papers/Proposals" below for additional information.
A "Program Review Workshop" will be held on September 27 for the Department of Teacher Education. Members of the faculty are encouraged to attend. The session will be in Halle 300, 9:00-11:00 a.m.
The MACTE Fall Conference will be held on October 4 at the Kellogg Center at MSU.
November 15 is the deadline for applications for the Provost's Research Support Fund for New (1st or 2nd year) Faculty. Awards are typically in the $2,500-$5,000 range.
Awards in the $300-$2,000 range are made monthly through the Graduate School Research Support Fund. All faculty members are eligible.
COE CREDIT HOURS
As of August 14, COE credit hours for Summer stood at 7,146, a 12% increase over last summer. As of the same date, COE credit hours for Fall were at 33,325, within 6.5% of final figures for last Fall. Teacher Education is already within one percentage point of last Fall's final credit hour production.
COE FALL CONFERENCE
The annual College of Education Fall Conference will be held on September 3, starting at 8:00 a.m., at the Eagle Crest Conference Center, Auditorium I.
New COE administrators and faculty members will be introduced, along with mentors for the new faculty members. Provost Paul Schollaert will deliver remarks, followed by an announcement concerning general education. During the course of the morning, several persons will receive special recognition, including six recipients of the first Dean's Awards for Distinguished Professional Activity in the COE.
Jerry Robbins will present on the state of the college, major activities for 2002-2003, and certain major challenges. The lunch session will be held in Salons IV and VI, over which Michael Bretting will preside. President Samuel Kirkpatrick will deliver remarks, Jack Minzey will introduce retired/emeritus faculty members, and Dale Rice will deliver the address of the hour.
Department/unit meetings will be held during the afternoon, also at Eagle Crest.
