FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

Charles M. "Chuck" Achilles is the author of the chapter on "Racial Disparities in School Discipline" in School Desegregation in the 21st Century (Praeger Publishing).

Ian Haslam is the author of "Integrating Thinking Skills and Movement Processes in Physical Education" which appeared recently in the Korean Journal of Thinking and Problem Solving.

Charles M. "Chuck" Achilles is the senior author of two items that have been released in the ERIC system recently. The first, "A District Planning Model," was done with W.E. McHenry. The second, "Serendipitious Policy Implications from Class-Size Initiated Inquiry: IAQ?" was done with Jean Prout (recent Ed.D. graduate), J.D. Finn, and Gordon Bobbett.

Dibya Choudhuri presented "Putting Together the Pieces: International Students in Counselor Education" at the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision in Park City, UT.

Alane Starko will be in Denver later this week, presenting at the National Association for Gifted Children.

David Anderson and Don Staub will be in Pittsburgh, PA later this week to present "Maximizing the Impact of the Comparative Education Program within the College of Education" at the Comparative and International Education Society Midwest regional conference.

Jackie Tracy will be in Birmingham, AL next week to present (with Dawn Malone and Dan Gaymer) at the conference of the Association for Continuing Higher Education. The presentation will be "Program Planning A-Z."

Ian Haslam completed his Union of European Football Association "A" License recently. The UEFA "A" is the highest soccer coaching award in Europe and is the credential required to coach in the European professional leagues. Haslam has played and coached the world game for 30 years, working with youth, college, and professional players and coaches during that time.

The Alliance for Excellent Education recently acknowledged National Advisory Board member Charles M. "Chuck" Achilles for his contribution to the publication "Every Child a Graduate: A Framework for an Excellent Education for all Middle and High School Students."

John Tonkovich recently served as a CARF surveyor of the medical rehabilitation and brain injury programs at The Ohio State University Medical School in Columbus.

Ron Williamson was recently in Los Angeles assisting the Galef Foundation to design a national leadership study for comprehensive school reform.

Jim Berry was recently in Houston, TX for a strategic meeting of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration.

Jeff Schulz has been named a School Health Education Advocate through a joint project of the American Association for Health Education and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Elizabeth Broughton (with graduate student Colleen Hanson) presented "Millennial Students: The Next Greatest Generation" at the Michigan College Student Personnel Association meeting in Grand Rapids.

David Anderson (with Nelson Maylone and Don Staub) presented "Data-Based Decision Making: Keys to Success" at the state NCA meeting. At the same meeting, Georgea Langer (with Amy Colton) presented "The Collaborative Analysis of Student Work."

Sally Rae presented "Activity and Advocacy" to physical educators in an inservice workshop held at Canton Charter Academy.

The following persons represented the COE at Information Sessions held recently in Livonia, Flint, Monroe, Detroit, Jackson, and Livingston County: Jackie Tracy, Ella Burton, Yvonne Callaway, Alane Starko, Regina George, Georgea Langer, Lynne Rocklage, and Joe Coyner.

David Anderson and Don Staub presented "Maximizing the Impact of the Cooperative Education Program within the College of Education" last Wednesday as part of the observance of International Education Week. Dibya Choudhuri will present "OSEAS Training" as part of the same series this coming Wednesday.

Standing committee chairs for this year are: Advanced Programs Committee, Ron Williamson; Basic Programs Committee, Russ Olwell (History & Philosophy); Personnel Committee, Gloria Neve; Planning and Finance Committee, Mary Rearick; and Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee, Yvonne Callaway.

Thomas Gwaltney has been named to the New Lecturers Outstanding Teacher Award committee.

Jenny Clark and CATE client Anna Dusbiber were featured on the EMU home page recently.

David Anderson facilitated a morning-long session on program review and evaluation for the College of Technology.

Leah Adams, emeritus, was elected to a second three-year term as Vice President for North America and the Caribbean for the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP). The election occurred during the organization's meeting in Durban, South Africa.

Margie Dargo will be joining HPERD as secretary, as of November 4.

Correction: A recent listing of COE faculty members who had previously received the Alumni Teaching Award inadvertently omitted the name of Dale Rice. Monday Report regrets the error.

STUDENT NOTES

Todd Heft and Donney Moroney won the master's Case Study Competition at the Michigan College Student Personnel Association convention in Grand Rapids.

University Scholarship applications are due January 31. Forms may be obtained at the EMU Scholarship Office or at EMU Financial Aid.

ALUMNI NOTES

Esther Williams '65 retired in June from being principal of Livonia's Coolidge Elementary School. She had 49 years of service in education. She was recently featured in the Detroit Free Press for her many accomplishments.

W. Frances Deckard '71, '74, a retired teacher from Willow Run's Edmondson Middle School, recently was named "Most Valuable Member" of the local branch of the NAACP. She is an Ypsilanti District Library board member, among many other activities.

Dennis Desmariais '85 is now the superintendent of the Northwest district.

Robert Szymoniak '95 is now the superintendent of the Onaway district.

Frank J. Krimbacher '49 died recently. He formerly taught in Plymouth, Chelsea, and Anchorage, AK. He retired as head of buildings and grounds for the Plymouth district.

COE COUNCIL

The College of Education Council met on October 23, with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding. The Council approved a change in ENG 328 and changes in the sociology teaching major and teaching minor. In addition, the Council approved changes in the Geology/Earth Science programs, including changes in the teaching major and teaching minor. All these changes had been recommended by the Basic Programs Committee.

Acting on recommendations of the Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee, the Council approved a new graduate certificate in Technical Communication and changes in ACC 340.

Various reports were received. Under old business, the Council recommended approval of LAW 550 "International Business Law" after the Department of Marketing demonstrated appreciable differences between this course and LAW 350 "International Business Law."

COE CREDIT HOURS

As of October 9, COE credit hours for Fall stood at 37,926-a 6.51% increase over last Fall. This included a 9.4% increase for HPERD, a 9.2% increase for L&C, an 8.1% increase for Special Education, and a 5.7% increase for Teacher Education. The increase for Student Teaching was 0.2%.

For the fiscal year to date, COE credit hours are 7.28% ahead of (Summer + Fall) for last year. This includes a 10.5% increase for HPERD, an 8.2% increase for L&C, a 7.5% increase for Teacher Education, and a 6.9% increase for Special Education. Student Teaching has a 0.06% decrease.

DEVELOPMENT REPORT

Gifts to the College of Education totaled $11,068 during the first quarter (July through September) of this fiscal year. This included $7,641 to endowed scholarship funds, $1,950 in the event/expensed category, $1,404 in expendable funds, and $73 to endowment funds in the COE.

UNITED WAY

As of October 25, there had been 53 gifts or pledges to the United Way from the COE, totaling $9,435. This includes 11 contributors from Special Education, nine from each of Teacher Education, Leadership and Counseling, HPERD, and Academic Services. There have been an additional six donors from the Dean's Office. The annual drive continues through the end of the month, with goals for the COE that we are not yet close to!

HOLIDAY PARTY SET

The second annual Dean's Holiday Party has been set from December 10, 2:00-4:00 p.m. in Porter 301 B/C. All faculty and staff members, including graduate assistants, are invited.

COE WEB SITE

During a recent month, the COE web site home page was visited an average of 139 times per day. Other sites visited frequently included (average per day) Teacher Education, 69; Office of Academic Services, 38; Special Education, 27; and Leadership and Counseling, 25.
