What: Election for office-holders at the local, state, and national levels; election on policy issues.
When: Tuesday, November 5, all day, extended hours.
Where: Voting precinct in your neighborhood!
Why: Because those elected will make critical decisions affecting finance, education, schools, children and youth, and other social services closely related to the programming of the COE (among a lot of other reasons).
AWARDS
Nelson Maylone received the Phi Delta Kappa District V "Outstanding Dissertation Award." The award was made during ceremonies of the PDK District V conference, held October 24-27 in Cleveland, OH.
Suzanne Hobson received the Human Rights Award from the Michigan Counseling Association for her work on behalf of gay, lesbian, and bisexual students. The award was presented in Grand Rapids as part of the Michigan Counseling Association conference.
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Beth Johnson and her family are featured in the November 11th issue of People magazine.
Ian Haslam (with J.G. Fishburne) is the author of the chapter on "Using the Information Highway to Teach Physical Education: Examples from Singapore and Canada" in B. Cope and M. Kalanzis (eds.), Learning for the Future (Melbourne, Australia: Common Ground Publishing).
Cristina José-Kampfner and EMU were featured in articles that appeared recently in Mexican newspapers. The articles included information about COE plans to offer programming at Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa.
Gary Banks attended the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association convention in Orillia, Canada. Banks is collaborating with other Michigan and Ontario authors on a book concerning safety guidelines for physical educators.
Nancy Halmhuber (with Robin Lackey) presented "Measurable Objectives: A Strategy for a Quality Program" at the Learn and Serve America Grantee meeting in Potomac, MD last month.
Lou Thayer presented "Coping with Transitions and Other Life Challenges" at the Michigan Counseling Association conference held last month in Grand Rapids. He and Liz Broughton displayed their wood carvings during the "art show" section of the conference.
Jon Margerum-Leys has had "Work Circles in Systemic Reform: Achieving Sustainability" accepted for presentation at the AACTE convention in January in New Orleans. Margerum-Leys has also been invited to serve as the chair/discussant for the session in which this will be presented.
Ron Williamson has been commissioned by a national organization to prepare a "white paper" on the importance of leadership in comprehensive school reform.
Nancy Halmhuber attended the board meeting of the Council for Educational Diagnosticians in Alexandria, VA. She is vice president of the organization. This was followed by attendance at the CEDS conference.
Gary Navarre attended the annual conference of the Council for Educational Diagnosticians, held in Alexandria, VA.
Ron Williamson attended the annual conference of the National Middle School Association, held in Portland, OR. While there, he conducted a pre-conference session on "Leadership for High Performing Middle Schools" and, with colleagues, during the conference, presented on "Schedules to Improve Student Achievement" and "Leadership to Support Effective Teaming." He also participated in a meeting of the Leadership Committee of the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform.
As president, Suzanne Hobson presided over the annual conference of the Michigan Counseling Association, held in Grand Rapids and attended by over 850 counselors from a variety of work settings.
Jim Berry was an accreditation reviewer from the Michigan Department of Education this past week, reviewing matters from the Clinton RESA.
Nelson Maylone has been appointed to membership in two Washtenaw Intermediate School District advisory groups. These are the Best Practices Work Group and the Leadership Academy Steering Committee.
Sharon Pendleton will conduct a yoga session on November 6, 7:00-9:00 p.m. in Phelps-Sellers Hall, near Eastern Eateries.
Diane Haslam presented "Nutrition and Healthy Living" to the EMU Black Student Association during their Health Awareness Week.
Stephen McGregor will present "Basic Physiological Responses to Muscle Injury and the Involvement of Inflammatory Cells, and Studies Examining Metabolism of Nutraceutical Products" on November 15, 2:00 p.m. in Porter 218. The public is invited. This is the second in the HPERD seminar series.
Kevin Carney, principal of Ypsilanti's Erickson Elementary School and husband of Karen Carney, was featured in a recent issue of the Ann Arbor News.
The October 29 issue of Focus EMU included substantial COE coverage. The below-the-fold front page story was an interview with Nel Noddings, current holder of the John W. Porter Chair in Urban Education. Of the 18 people mentioned in the "People" section, 11 have a COE affiliation. References to the Phil Jenkins gift to the COE and to alum Dean Rockwell were included in a report on major gifts to the university. The COE Director of Development, Susan Rink, was included in a story on new assignments related to the EMU Foundation. Numerous COE faculty and staff members were included in the list of donors to the EMU faculty/staff campaign. Two prospective teachers, recipients of scholarships, were quoted as to how the funds assisted them.
Lou Porretta, emeritus, had bypass surgery a few weeks ago.
A member of our "extended family," Don Phillips (Chemistry), 60, died last week. Phillips had a long history of "making chemistry alive" for school children. He had served at EMU since 1972. The funeral was held last Friday.
Margrit Zinggeler (Foreign Language and Bilingual Studies) will present "Promoting Foreign Language Education: A Proposal to Add the 6th 'C' (For Computer) to the ACTFL Standards With the Magic of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales" at the Hawaii International Conference on Education in January.
Recently, the Halle Library hosted the second annual Celebration and Poster session-a collaboration of librarians, an EMU history class, and sixth graders from Belleville North Middle School.
NEL NODDINGS SCHEDULE
Nel Noddings, the current holder of the John W. Porter Chair in Urban Education, will be in residency November 4-6. Among her major activities during that time:
November 4:
"Mathematics and the Ethic of Caring," breakfast meeting with the faculty of the Department of Mathematics.
"The Ethics of Care and the Future of Feminism," brown bag lunch, cosponsored by Women's Studies and philosophy, Burson Room, Roosevelt Hall. The public is invited. For additional information, call Kate Mehuron at 487.1177.
"Care and Public Policy" session with supervisors of the counseling internship.
She will meet with the students in CSAP 655 (College Student Development Theory) for a session on "Caring."
November 5:
Activities all day with personnel from the Comer Project schools in Detroit. Evening: Meet with combined classes of SOFD 550 (Philosophy of Education) and CURR 655 (Curriculum Foundations)
November 6:
Visit to Gaudior Charter Academy; meeting with principals of EMU-affiliated public school academies. Present "Care in the Classroom" to SPGN 491 (special education student teacher seminar).
STUDENT NOTES
Cynthia L.M. Swift will defend her dissertation "A Model for Educational Leadership: Problems, Solutions and Policy Entrepreneurs" on November 7 at 1:00 p.m. in Porter 221. James Barott is the chair. The public is invited.
Today is the deadline for dissertation submission for possible December graduation. November 15 is the deadline for thesis submission. For information, deb.delaski-smith@emich.edu
ALUMNI NOTES
Nila Carter '54, '66, a teacher of English at Lincoln High School, Van Dyke district, Warren, was named recently as "Teacher of the Week" by the Detroit News. Her classes' yearbooks have won national competitions and copy-writing awards.
Dennis McComb '72, '75, superintendent of the Milan schools, is serving as the current president of the Michigan Association of School Administrators.
Mary Ann Jaeger '84 is principal of Pittsfield Elementary School in Ann Arbor. Her school recently received a $10,000 "Golden Apple" award from Governor Engler for great improvement in scores on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program tests. The school may determine how the money is spent.
Mike Erspamer, a teacher of art at Lincoln Elementary School in Westland, was recently named by the Detroit News as "Teacher of the Week." His students have won the state "Tar Wars" poster contest for the past three years.
Ann Gordon Rosenkrantz, age 90, died recently after a long illness. She spent the bulk of her career as a psychiatric social worker.
UNITED WAY
As of November 1, 74 COE faculty and staff members had contributed/pledged $13,715 to the United Way campaign. This represents a 40% increase in participation and an 18% increase in gifts over last year at this time.
