ATHLETIC TRAINING ACCREDITATION RECEIVED
EMU was recently notified by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Athletic Training (JRC-AT) of the continuing accreditation of our program in athletic training. The determination was made during a meeting of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Jodi Johnson has been the faculty member primarily responsible for overseeing the accreditation process.
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Gloria Neve will be honored this Friday night in Mt. Pleasant as she is inducted into the Central Michigan University Athletic Hall of Fame in the multi-sport category. Hall of Fame members will be honored again on Saturday at the CMU-Ball State football game. Neve played four years in field hockey and two each in basketball, softball, and volleyball. She was a member of the 1963 Michigan All-Star field hockey team that played the touring German national team.
Ron Williamson's chapter, "Principals Make a Difference: Learning and Teaching Together," appeared recently in Transforming Ourselves: Transforming Schools, published by the National Middle School Association.
Ian Haslam's "Psychological Skills Education (PSE) for School Age Athletes" appeared recently in the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation: Sport and Dance Journal.
Martha Baiyee received one of the twelve ORD "dedicated time for proposal development" awards. She proposes to present "The Preschool Expulsion Project" to the National Institute for Child Health Development.
Georgia Langer (with Amy Colton) led a two-day professional development institute on "The Collaborative Analysis of Student Work" for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development recently in Washington, D.C.
Charles M. "Chuck" Achilles presented "There's Sumpin Fishy About Them Scales" and (with Jeremy Finn, SUNY Buffalo) "Constructing 'Common Sense' From Class-Size Research, Theory, and Use," both at the Mid-South Educational Research Association conference in Chattanooga, TN.
Irene Allen presented "East Asian Cultural Connections Through Recent Children's Books" at the annual state conference of the Utah Council of the International Reading Association in Salt Lake City.
Joe Bishop attended the American Association for Educational Studies and Midwest/Northeast Comparative and International Education Society conventions in Pittsburgh. At the former, he was nominated to serve on the Editorial Advisory Board for Educational Studies. At the latter, he served as a discussant for a session on civic education reform and globalization.
Sally Rae presented "No Gym? No Problem," "Five Minute Heart Starters," and "Let's Get the Couch Potatoes Off the Couch!" at the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance convention in Battle Creek.
Sherry Jerome choreographed a piece, based on Degas paintings, that was premiered at the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance convention. She and her students will be performing later this month at a Saline elementary school as part of a "Ballet and Degas" assembly program. The Dance Forum students will travel to Detroit on November 17 to experience the Degas exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Art.
Gary Banks presented "Statutory Law and Case Law in Michigan High School Athletics" to athletic coaches at an MHSAA workshop held in Allen Park.
Ian Haslam and Eddie Bedford attended the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance convention recently. At that convention, Janet Balowski presented "First Aid in the Elementary Classroom: Basic Instructional Skills."
Vic Chiasson presented at a recent session of Leadership EMU.
Sally Rae was recently inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, An International Honor Society in Education. Beth Johnson and Thomas Gwaltney will be presenting at a KDP conference at the University of Michigan.
Beth Johnson was on the "Mojo in the Morning" (95.5) radio show, related to the recent article in People magazine about her teen-aged triplets.
Joe Bishop is working with the International Club at Ypsilanti's West Middle School, assisting with a web-based project on international affairs and diplomacy in an international competition. Bishop is also involved with a campus project involving students from SOFD 328 and a dozen international students from eight countries in social events.
The work of Carolyn Finch with the MARS project was a recent feature of the "ORD Digest." Among other activities, the project provides biweekly seminars for 20 minority seniors enrolled in teacher preparation programs. Also involved in the project are Elizabeth Broughton, Deborah Harmon, Christine Lancaster, Jim Berry, and graduate assistant Jewell McClendon.
Marina McCormack recently celebrated a 10-year service anniversary in the COE and at EMU.
ALUMNI NOTES
Tim Dyer '61, '65 has announced his retirement from his professorial position at Arizona State University, as of January 1. Dyer, a member of the EMU Education Alumni Hall of Fame, is the former executive of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, a former EMU Regent and Ypsilanti mayor, and a former school administrator in Michigan and Arizona.
Kathy Poole '73, '76, a first grade teacher at Kettering Elementary School in Westland, was recently named "Teacher of the Week" by the Detroit News.
Patricia Nelson '74 is the associate dean of the College of Education at Pennsylvania State University.
Alene Collins, aged 94, died recently. She obtained her teaching certificate from "The Normal" c. 1930 and then taught in Milan.
Beatrice Ruth Wooley '33, '60, died recently at age 92. She taught at all grade levels in such communities as Charlotte and Olivet. In her retirement, she was a reading volunteer in the Ann Arbor schools.
STUDENT NOTES
Pi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi is sponsoring both a used clothing and a nonperishable food drive. Collection boxes are in several locations, including near the south entrance of the Porter Building.
EMU students were active in the MAHPERD convention in Battle Creek-presiding over sessions, presenting international games, and completing other activities associated with the conference. The group has held the organization's participation banner for several years. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation makes available at least one graduate-level fellowship worth up to $24,000 in each state. Current and prospective secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and social studies are eligible to apply. The deadline is March 1. Educational Testing Service has called for nominations/applications for the Harold Gulliksen Psychometric Research Fellowship Program. COE BY THE NUMBERS
As of October 23, COE credit hours stood at 38,054, a 6.87% increase over last Fall final figures. This is a 7.59% increase in credit hours for the fiscal year to date.
As of the end of October, COE faculty/staff members had submitted nine proposals for external funding in the amount of $2,653,252. Six awards had been received, in the amount of $371,515.
As of November 1, 839 persons had been admitted to COE graduate programs during this fiscal year.
The number of undergraduate students attributed to the COE (headcount) for Fall 2002 is 3,778, a 2% increase over Fall 2001. This includes 609 in HPERD (1% increase), 649 in Special Education (1% increase), and 2,520 in Teacher Education (2% increase).
SHORT NOTES
The program review of the Department of Teacher Education has been postponed until 2004-05.
