FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Don Bennion and Michael Harris (Associate Provost) presented "Developing a Directory of Assessment Activities" to a capacity crowd of 650 at the 2002 Assessment Institute in Indianapolis.
Ellen Hoffman recently represented EMU in St. Louis, MO at a meeting of the partners in the CATALISE project.
Don Bennion recently attended the annual meeting of the National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT). Bennion has been a member of NAIT's board of accreditation since 1989.
Gary Banks presented "Must Do and Must Not Do for Safety in Your Gym" and "Recess is for Fun but Protect Your Assets, Don't Get Burned" at the recent convention of the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in Battle Creek.
Lidia Lee presented "Noise-Induced Hearing Loss and Hearing Safety" at the Audio Engineering Society, Detroit Section, meeting in Southfield.
Jerry Robbins represented EMU at last Friday's meeting of the Michigan (Education) Dean's Council in Lansing.
Charles M. "Chuck" Achilles (Australia), Jim Berry (Mexico), Yvonne Callaway (Zimbabwe), and Ian Haslam (Great Britain, Canada, Singapore) were mentioned in a recent publication of EMU's World College.
Marvin Johnson, Christine Karshin, Sarah Ginsberg, Jackie McGinnis, and Alane Starko represented the College of Education and its programs at the recent "Explore Eastern" session.
Nelson Maylone's "Assessment Tips for EMU Professors" was included in the October issue of EMU's "Assessment Matters" newsletter.
Beth Johnson was featured in the Detroit News and is scheduled to be featured in today's issue of the Ann Arbor News. The features include her triplet sons, adoption, parenting, and the like.
Connie Witt has been named as the COE's first grants associate. She will begin half-time duties on December 9. Witt will assist awardees with grant management tasks as well as assist with obtaining new and additional awards.
ALUMNI AWARDS
Two alums received major awards during the recent convention of the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, held in Battle Creek.
Kirk Pedersen '95, an elementary physical education teacher in the Walled Lake district, was honored by MAHPERD with the annual "Young Innovator of the Year" award. This award goes to the physical education teacher in the state with seven years or less of experience who has made significant contributions to the field and who has demonstrated outstanding potential.
Pedersen was EMU's 1995 "Physical Education Major of the Year." In 2000-2001, he was recognized as the "Teacher of the Year" by Glengary Elementary School in Walled Lake.
Kamala Laird Waryas '89, a teacher in the Detroit Public Schools, received the MAHPERD "Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year." She was recognized for the innovative programs in physical education for students with disabilities that she has brought to the Detroit Public Schools.
ALUMNI NOTES
Dean Rockwell '35, highly decorated WWII hero, successful coach, and businessman, was cited in the annual report of the EMU Foundation for his generous gift to the Foundation to support track programs.
Richard G. Telfer '48 visited the Porter Building recently. He is the owner of Educational Directions of Las Vegas, NV, which is involved with nuclear waste issues. Telfer was in the area to lecture to the nuclear engineering faculty and students at the University of Michigan. He is the author of "A New Role for the Nevada Test Site" in the March/April 2002 issue of Radwaste Solutions and of "What's Next for Yucca Mountain" in the September/October 2002 issue of the same journal.
Tom Wall '71, '73, '76, a retired special education and driver education teacher in the Willow Run Community Schools, was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News. Wall is known for his enormous sense of humor and his community work with the disabled.
Charles A. "Chuck" White '88, '96 was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News. He is head football coach and mathematics teacher at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor.
Timothy Frusti '91 is an assistant professor of education at Concordia University, Ann Arbor.
Francis Winter '55, '60, aged 73, died recently in Phoenix, AZ. Winter retired from serving as principal of Wayne Memorial High School in the Wayne-Westland district. Walker-Winter Elementary School in that district is named in his honor. He not only spent his entire career in the Wayne-Westland district, but, after retirement, he ran for the school board and served five years as its president.
Edwin J. Lindberg, aged 71, died recently in North Carolina. He was a former teacher of art in area schools.
STUDENT NOTES
Master's student Mark Oglesby, a social studies teacher at Howell High School, was one of 56 U.S. teachers to receive a James Madison Memorial Fellowship, and the only Michigan person to receive this recognition this year. The award, provided by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation, will pay up to $24,000 toward completion of a master's degree with a concentration on American history and the U.S. Constitution.
Peiyi (Chris) Lin, a master's student in educational leadership, was pictured and featured in the EMU Foundation annual report. Lin received the May Tuan Wu Ting endowed scholarship.
COE COUNCIL MEETING
The College of Education Council met on November 13, with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding.
The Council reviewed a proposal for ENGL 307 Writing Process for Elementary Teachers. The Council approved the course, subject to Jim Berry's verification that the course proposal document was internally consistent. The Council approved proposed revisions in the teaching major and the teaching minor in biology, with a comment.
The Council approved State Periodic Review/Program Evaluation materials submitted by eight programs and that were recommended by the Basic Programs Committee.
Members of the COE Planning and Finance Committee presented the draft COE Strategic Plan for this cycle, along with the priority order. After discussion, the Council approved the draft plan, subject to small editorial revisions.
The components are (in descending order of priority): additional COE support staff and faculty/staff training in technology; Warner Building renovations; internationalization/enhance work of COE Office of Collaborative Education; doctoral programming in curriculum and instruction; expansion of the Porter Chair role; creation of the Michigan Educational Policy Center. In addition, the proposal supports a multi-college activity, the proposed nutraceutical research and training center.
The Council adopted a resolution encouraging EMU's Business and Finance Division to include in its strategic plan, and/or through other mechanisms, funds such as to address/resolve maintenance issues in the Warner Building. Various reports were received, including a notification that a wide variety of modifications in special education courses had been handled administratively.
ADVISING LISTSERV
An advising listserv for prospective elementary, secondary, and K-12 teachers will begin in December and continue with monthly updates. This is an e-mail service that will send those students who register the latest advising information about teacher preparation programs, potentially including course offerings, program changes, and opportunities for individual advising.

COE BY THE NUMBERS
After the processing of various "drops" and "adds," as of November 10, COE credit hours for Fall stood at 38,038, an increase of 6.83% over last Fall. For the fiscal year to date, the COE is 7.55% ahead of last year's (Summer + Fall). HPERD leads in growth, with an 11.1% increase over last year to date.
During October, the COE Advising Office handled 120 student appointments. In addition, approximately 70 phone calls and emails were handled. There were 12 group advising sessions for undergraduate students and an additional three group advising sessions for post-baccalaureate students. The largest single category of questions had to do with the requirements of the student's major or minor.
SHORT NOTES
The deadline for applications for the Artistic Recognition Award and the Scholarship Recognition Award is February 15. These awards include $1,000 cash and a commemorative plaque. Announcements will be made in March. For additional information, contact Graduate Studies and Research.
