FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Ellen Hoffman and Marcia Mardis (doctoral student/adjunct faculty) presented "Building Digital Libraries for Children: Reviewing Information Literacy of Students and Teachers" at the International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries in Singapore last month. Hoffman (with Edward Fox, VA Tech) also presented "Building Policy, Building Community: an Example from the U.S. National Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Library."
Ron Williamson's article "Women Transitioning into Leadership: Gender as Both Help and Hindrance" appeared in the Fall issue of Advancing Women in Leadership.
Don Staub and David Anderson will present "Let's Play: Using Games to Connect Online and Face-to-Face Learning in Comparative and International Education Courses" at the annual conference of the Comparative and International Education Society in New Orleans in March. Joe Bishop will present "Democracy Achieved? A Comparison of Secondary Student Definitions of Democracy in the Czech and Slovak Republics" at the same convention.
Shawn Quilter is a member of the editorial board for the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration.
Jon Margerum-Leys will present "Professional Development: Many Means to Many Ends" at the MACUL conference in Detroit in March. Ellen Hoffman (with Sue Wittick, MI Department of Education) will present "Technology Standards for Teacher Education." Student Renee Bow (with Pam Shoemaker, Walled Lake schools) will present "Strategic Planning for Technology Literacy" at the same meeting.
Jerry Robbins conducted a concert of the Ypsilanti Community Band at Washtenaw Community College on December 19.
The son of former faculty member Jan Collins-Eaglin, Fulton Christopher Eaglin, a senior at Morehouse College in Atlanta, has received a Marshall Scholarship to attend Oxford University.
ALUMNI NOTES
Gayle Green '66 is leaving her position as superintendent of the Willow Run schools to become assistant superintendent for instruction for the Macomb Intermediate School District.
James Ryan '71, '73 was recently named as superintendent of the Plymouth-Canton school district. He had previously served as acting superintendent and deputy superintendent in that district. He has also been superintendent of the Waverly schools and the Reed City schools.
Saundra Mull '89 is the director of operations for the Southern Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.
Kelly MacGregor '92, a biology teacher at Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, was recently named by the Detroit News as "Teacher of the Week."
The person who may have been EMU's oldest living alum died recently at age 106. Sarah Emily Rice Blair '24 received a life certificate from The Normal, after which she spent a 41-year career in schools in Adrian, Pontiac, Whitmore Lake, and several one-room schoolhouses in Washtenaw County.
Helene Jedele, age 88, died recently. She held two degrees from EMU and had a 35-year career as a first-grade teacher in Michigan schools.
Dennis Henry Chase '42 died recently. For 35 years he taught wood shop in the Wyandotte schools.
Valerio DeLuca '43, longtime coach, principal, and school board member in the Melvindale school district, died recently. He was associated with the district from 1943 until his retirement in 1975. He was elected to the school board in 1978 and served as its president in 1982-83.
Gloria Hatcher Keener, age 63, of Southfield, died recently. She began her career as a teacher in the Detroit schools. However, in 1970 she became a caseworker in adoption and foster care programs, later becoming a U.S. probation officer for the Eastern District of Michigan.
STUDENT NOTES
Marcia Pray, age 53, a bachelor's level student in exercise science and a personal trainer at the Liberty Athletic Club in Ann Arbor, was featured in a recent issue of the Ann Arbor News.
Students from Joe Bishop's SOFD 328 class spent the day recently in Alison Park Elementary School in Cambridge, Ontario, near Toronto. The purpose of the visit was to consider similarities and differences between U.S. and Canadian schools.

At the December commencement, 280 graduate students received degrees through the College of Education. These included 13 doctoral students and 16 specialist students. So far this fiscal year, completers of COE graduate programs are running 14% above the same time last fiscal year and 22% ahead of the same time two years ago.
SPONSORED PROJECTS
Nora Martin, with Jerry Robbins as administrator, has been awarded $461,000 by the Skillman Foundation for "Comer Schools and Families Initiative, Year 9." This is the ninth and final year of support from the Skillman Foundation for the implementation and replication of the nine elements of the school development program in the Detroit Comer Schools.
DEVELOPMENT NOTES
Bill Morris of Monroe has completed a $10,000 gift to the COE. An office in the Porter Building has been named in honor of his parents.
Johnny and Charlotte Carson of Bloomfield Hills have completed a $10,000 gift to endow the Carson/McCree Scholarship. Many thanks to these and other generous benefactors!
COE BY THE NUMBERS
As of December 18, COE credit hours for Winter were at 34,615, within 6% of last Winter's final credit hours. As of December 18, Teacher Education was already 7.1% ahead of final credit hours for that department last Winter.
For Summer + Fall credit hours, the COE is 7.7% ahead of Summer + Fall in the previous fiscal year, with increases of 11% in HPERD and 8% in each of Leadership and Counseling, Special Education, and Teacher Education.
For the Winter semester, 675 student teachers have been placed, an all-time high for any semester at EMU.
On December 24, the counter on the opening page of the COE web site passed the 100,000 mark! From mid-November to mid-December 2002, the Department of Teacher Education page was accessed 64 times per day, on average, followed by the COE Office of Academic Services (39) and the Departments of Leadership and Counseling and Special Education (22).
According to the December 17 issue of Focus EMU, of approximately 900 students enrolled in the EMU Honors Program, 228 are prospective teachers.
SHORT NOTES
Today is the deadline for nominations for the K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award. Graduate students planning a higher education career are eligible. The stipend covers travel, lodging, conference registration, and a one-year membership in the American Association for Higher Education. For information, contact AAHE in Washington.
Nominations are due by January 10 for the awards to be presented at the annual EMU Alumni Awards Dinner. Categories are (a) Outstanding Young Alumnus/Alumna, (b) Alumnus/Alumna Achievement, ( c) Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna, and (d) John W. Porter Distinguished Service, which may be awarded to a person not an EMU alum. Forms are available in each COE office. For information, alumni.relations@emich.edu.
The COE's membership in the SINO-American Education Consortium makes faculty and staff members and students eligible to participate in the "Education Trip to China" of that organization (May 31 to June 15). Application must be received by February 15. For information, ywan@kennesaw.edu.
February 17 is the deadline for submitting proposals to the fifth International Conference of the Athens Institute for Education and Research in Greece. For information, atiner@otenet.gr.
COE IN THE MEDIA
A December 18 article in the Detroit Free Press featured Vernor Elementary in Detroit and its substantial accomplishments in test score improvements. Vernor has been a "Comer School," with substantial participation by EMU students and faculty members from several disciplines, for the past eight years.
A December 15 article in the Ann Arbor News carried the headline "EMU's Student Teachers for Blind in Big Demand." George Barach and several students in the visually impaired program were quoted at length.
An Ypsilanti Courier December 19 article covered the formal creation of East Middle School as the COE's third "consociate" school.
Four of the nine persons included in the "People" section of the December 17 issue of Focus EMU are COE affiliated-Leah Adams (emeritus), Beth Johnson, Suzanne Hobson and Julianne Pedersen.
DANCEORATIONS!
The Dance Program will present "Danceorations!" on January 17 and 18 at 8:00 p.m. and January 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the Quirk Theatre. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. The concert is dedicated to Mohammed Kordadian, an Iranian-born American dancer currently under house arrest in Iran for allegedly corrupting youth by teaching dance.
EMU student dancers will perform the choreography of Sherry Jerome, Joann McNamara, and Julianne O'Brien Pedersen, along with other local choreographers.
The accompaniment for several dances will be provided by Tamara Wilcox on piano, as well as by Diane Wilder (Music), 'cellist. The concert also features a performance of Pedersen's choreography by the Troy-based MooreDances Contemporary Dance Company.
