COE AT AACTE
An all-time high number of COE faculty and staff members recently attended the annual convention of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education in New Orleans. A number of related organizations met during this time as well.
Wendy Burke organized a session on "Integrating the Use of Assessment Strategies During a Sequence of Professional Education Courses." Papers presented during this session included "Beginning to Use Student Data to Plan for and Assess Instruction," by Pat Pokay; "Incorporating K-12 Student Assessment into the Reading Phase," by Mary Rearick and Peggy Moore-Hart; and "Applying the Teacher Work Sample During Student Teaching," by Wendy Burke. Alane Starko served as the critic/discussant for this session.
Jon Margerum-Leys presented "Work Circles in Systemic Reform: Achieving Sustainability."
"Online Self-Advising Project from Plan to Product: How Low $$$ + High Tech = High Returns + Rapid Implementation," by Olga Nelson and Ellen Hoffman was presented by Hoffman, who also served in the chair/discussant role for this session as well.
Pat Pokay organized a session on "Issues in the Assessment of Dispositional Behaviors in a Large Teacher Preparation Program." Papers presented in this session were "Critique of the Dispositional Behaviors Instrument: Strengths and Challenges," by Kaia Skaggs; "Development of a Dispositional Behavior Instrument," by Pat Pokay; "Dispositional Behavior: An Administrator's View," by Alane Starko; and "Dispositional Behavior: The View from Student Teaching," by Barbara Gorenflo.
"The MARS Program: Supporting Minority Achievement, Retention, and Success," by Carolyn Finch, Deborah Harmon, and Elizabeth Broughton was presented.
A poster session on "A Day in the Life: Putting Some Fun in Technology Professional Development" was presented by Ellen Hoffman, Jean Rauch, and Brian Filipiak.
Jerry Robbins chaired a session on "The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence." He also served as a panelist on the same topic during the meeting of the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities (TECSCU).
Georgea Langer and Pat Pokay were among those who participated in working sessions of the "Teacher Quality" grant consortium. Ellen Hoffman, Jean Rauch, and Brian Filipiak participated in working sessions of the CATALISE grant consortium.
Jim Berry participated in a number of sessions related to NCATE policies and preparation for NCATE visits.
Jerry Robbins participated in his last meeting as a member of the AACTE board of directors. In addition, he attended a meeting of the AACTE nominations committee and reported for that committee at the AACTE business session. He also participated in a meeting of the AACTE membership committee. Robbins also attended his last meeting as a member of the board of directors of the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities. He participated in the business meeting of the Council of the Great City Colleges of Education and in a meeting of the education deans of The Renaissance Group.
Robbins attended a joint meeting of the board of directors of the Michigan Association of Colleges of Teacher Education and the Michigan (Education) Deans Council. Robbins also served as host for the annual EMU/MACTE reception for alumni and friends.
Provost Paul Schollaert participated in a meeting of presidents and provosts of AACTE member institutions.
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
Pat Williams-Boyd was named the Region 2 College Educator of the Year by the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators. She will be presented her award on March 13 during the MAMSE state conference.
Ron Williamson was recently in Pomona, CA for four days, facilitating a National Leadership Institute for 155 elementary and middle school principals. The event was sponsored by the Galef Institute.
Williamson was also recently in New Orleans, LA where he participated in the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform. He is a member of the steering committee and of the leadership committee.
Judy Williston and Sue Grossman recently attended the winter meeting in Bethesda, MD of the publications committee of the Association for Childhood Education International.
Ellen Hoffman will be in Orlando, FL this week attending the International Society for Technology in Education forum on National Planning for Educational Technology and Technology Literacy. The purpose is to advise the U.S. Department of Education on the National Educational Technology Plan that is under development.
Sally Rae recently conducted an inservice workshop for physical education teachers in the Grosse Pointe area.
Sherry Jerome served as a dance panelist for the Michigan Arts and Humanities Council at a meeting in Lansing. The panel selected which Michigan dance companies should be included in the Council's touring directory.
Gary Banks attended the MAHPERD leadership development conference in Frankenmuth in his capacities as attorney for the organization and as coauthor of the proposed safety guidelines for school physical education programs.
Jim Berry was in Lansing last Friday, attending a briefing session on Title II reporting of "program completers."
Michael Paciorek has served as a member of the campus Student Judicial Services review committee.
Phil Bogle and Kay Woodiel are members of the campus Employee Wellness Committee. The Committee urges all at EMU to participate in TestWell, an annual survey on wellness. The URL is www.emich.edu/wellness. The password is "wellness." The User Login code for various employee groups has previously been distributed.
Winnie Witten was named to emeritus status at the January 21st meeting of the EMU Board of Regents. Witten served HPERD from 1979 through 2002. Gayle Nash's retirement from EMU after 25 years of service was noted during the same meeting.
Leah Adams, emeritus, recently returned from a UNESCO consultancy to Oman. She has now been invited to be part of a small group of early childhood professionals attending a consultancy meeting at UNESCO headquarters in Paris in May.
Gerald Kratz, who served for some years as an adjunct in the Department of Leadership and Counseling, died suddenly last week. In recent years he was superintendent of the Jackson County ISD. He had only recently assumed a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives.
John Hansen, who has frequently served as an adjunct in the Department of Leadership and Counseling, has been named interim superintendent of the Willow Run schools. Hansen formerly served as the Dexter superintendent. More recently, he served in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Several hundred people gathered last Thursday to bid farewell to Merri McClure, who retired after 35 years of service to EMU, the past 11.5 years of which were as administrative secretary to the Dean of the College of Education. McClure will be succeeded by Karen Hansen, effective February 17.
IN THE MEDIA
The COE's consociate partnership with Estabrook Elementary School was the subject of the cover story in the November 2002 issue of "Key Issues," a publication of the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association. In particular the story reported on the work done by students in a mathematics methods course taught by Joanne Caniglia (Mathematics) and an after-school mathematics club at the school.
The COE Winter Conference on February 6 was the subject of a front-page story in the Eastern Echo on January 29.
The British Broadcasting System contacted Jeff Armstrong for information from his research for a forthcoming TV series on evolution for BBC1.
ALUMNI NOTES
J.E. Morcombe '32 has been named to the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame. Distinguishing himself in track and cross country at The Normal, he went on to coach high school sports in Michigan schools. He was Michigan Coach of the Year in both basketball and baseball.
John Baublit '71, '75, marketing education teacher at Ann Arbor's Pioneer High School, was the subject of a "Faber's World" column in the Ann Arbor News on January 17.
Lanny Mills '71 has been named to the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame. After an outstanding career as a gymnast at EMU, he went on to become a highly successful high school gymnastics coach, developing eight All-American high school gymnasts in nine seasons at Trenton High School.
Nancy Cook '72, '77 has been named the principal of the yet-to-be-opened Childs Elementary School in the Lincoln district. Cook is currently the principal of Model Elementary in Lincoln.
Michael Boulas '74, '75, formerly deputy treasurer in Michigan's Department of Treasury, has been named executive director of The Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan. This organization serves as a forum for the presidents and chancellors of Michigan's 15 public universities to discuss and frame positions on key higher education finance and policy issues.
William Malcolm '77 received one of two Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Awards in ceremonies at the EMU Convocation Center on January 20. Malcolm is an intensive probation officer with the Washtenaw County Trial Court Family Division/Juvenile Center.
Stephen Barbus '82 is Dean of the College of Education at Saginaw Valley State University.
Tom Danna '70, '77, age 56, Hartland High School counselor and coach, was killed last week in an automobile accident on U.S. 23.
STUDENT NOTES
Anil Abraham was one of two recipients of the Strand-Evans Diversity Award during ceremonies at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observance.
Michelle Williamson, a prospective secondary social studies teacher, is an EMU Presidential Scholar. She was featured in a recent issue of "Focus EMU."
The Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) offers a student discount for attendance at this year's March 12-14 conference at Cobo Center in Detroit. For information, khauze@macul.org.
Pi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi held a "lesson plan swap" at its January 28 meeting. There will be a member meeting at 6:30 p.m. on February 12 in the Town Hall School. Information on KDP scholarships is available from Thomas Gwaltney, counselor.
COE COUNCIL
The College of Education Council met on January 22, with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding.
The Council approved the state folio in Japanese Language and Culture pending editorial changes. The state folio for Fine Arts (Arts Group) was approved, along with the content of Form XX for physical education. Each of the former actions had been recommended by the Basic Programs Committee.
Based on recommendations by the Advanced Programs Committee, the Middle Level Education state folio was approved. The Council also endorsed a graduate certificate program in Community College Leadership. Various reports were received.
COE BY THE NUMBERS
As of January 26, COE credit hours stood at 39,426 for the Winter term, a 7.74% increase over final figures for the previous Winter term. These stats include an 11.9% increase in Teacher Education, a 7.8% increase in Student Teaching, a 6.8% increase in Leadership and Counseling, a 5.4% increase in HPERD, and a 3.4% increase in Special Education.
For the fiscal year to date, COE credit hours are 7.75% ahead of final figures for last years (Summer + Fall + Winter) credit hours. These stats include a 9.6% increase in Teacher Education, an 8.2% increase in HPERD, a 7.6% increase in Leadership and Counseling, a 5.9% increase in Special Education and a 4.3% increase in Student Teaching.
For the Winter term, 3,559 undergraduate students are attributed to the College of Education.
These include 2,381 in Teacher Education, 605 in Special Education, and 573 in HPERD. The largest "majors" include TE01 Elementary Education Intent (805), TE31 Three Minors (606), TE37 Language Arts Group (367), PE 31 Physical Education (245), TE33 Elementary Science Group (243), TE02 Secondary Education Intent (182), and SP31 Emotionally Impaired (178).
From mid-December through mid-January, the COE web site main page was "hit" an average of 153 times per day. Other popular destinations on the COE web site were Teacher Education (71 hits per day) and the COE Office of Academic Services (59 hits per day).

Martha Townsend (University of Missouri) will present sessions on February 3 on "Writing in the College Classroom." The fifth annual Graduate Research Fair will be held in McKenny Union, 1:00-5:30 p.m. on March 24. The public is invited.
AACTE CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education has issued the call for papers for the 2004 annual meeting. Proposals are due by June 2. AACTE has also issued a call for reviewers. NUTRACEUTICAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING GROUP
Stephen McGregor, Jeff Armstrong, and Jeff Schulz, along with six colleagues from other disciplines in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Health and Human Services, make up the EMU Nutraceutical Research and Training Group. McGregor is serving as the Project Director for a Research Excellence Fund activity. In recent days, this group has acquired and installed a liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer and engaged a technician to perform analyses. The group has several major funding proposals that are pending.
Several presentations have resulted to date from the work of this group, including ones by both McGregor and Armstrong. McGregor is the senior author of an article that is in review.
In addition, the work of the Nutraceutical Research and Training Group is supporting graduate student research. At least six master's theses are in progress or have been completed.
