STUDENT RESEARCH LEADS TO AUSTRALIAN VISITOR TO CAMPUS

Elizabeth "Beth" Storey is currently a student teacher in a POHI setting at Roosevelt-McGrath Elementary School in the Wayne-Westland district.

Storey is a Presidential Scholar who has strong skills in forensics. In preparing for her competitive speech for 2001-02, she came upon an article about "spray-on skin," a potential treatment for burn victims. The product was being researched and developed by Dr. Fionia Wood in Perth, Australia.

Storey began an email communication with Dr. Wood that continued for many months, with Dr. Wood supporting Storey in the preparation of her speech. Storey won the 2002 state forensic competition with her speech on "spray-on skin" and then went on to place 7th in the nation with the same speech.

The support of Beth Storey led to an invitation for Dr. Wood to travel from Australia to serve as the keynote speaker for this year's EMU Undergraduate Symposium.
