JEROME WINS ARTISTIC AWARD

Sherry Jerome will receive the EMU Artistic Recognition Award for 2002-2003 in ceremonies on March 26 at 3:00 p.m. in the McKenny Union Ballroom. The award is being made for the December 6, 2002 Pease Auditorium production of The Fantastic Toy Shop with Kevin Miller (Music).

The award includes a $500 prize and a commemorative plaque. Jerome has choreographed and directed a series of ballets, produced with full orchestra in Pease Auditorium, especially designed for area school children.

FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

The February 2003 issue of Educational Leadership contains an article by Gordon Cawelti that identifies the 11 pieces of research during the past 50 years that have "changed education." Included among the 11 is the research by Charles M. "Chuck" Achilles (with Jeremy Finn and Helen Bain) on the effects of class size on student learning in the early grades. Other studies included are those of Ralph Tyler, Madeline Hunter, Jean Piaget, etc.

Nelson Maylone's article "TestThink" has been accepted for publication in the Phi Delta Kappan.

Nora Martin, Alison Harmon, and Sherrie Joseph presented "Impact of School Reform on Academic Achievement" at a meeting sponsored by the Ford Foundation in New Haven, CT.

John Tonkovich was a featured speaker at the Kentucky Speech-Language-Hearing Association convention in Lexington. His address was on "Process Oriented Interventions that Facilitate Participation in Adults with Neurogenic Communication and Swallowing Disorders."

Jeffrey Schulz has been invited to address the Mississippi Alliance for School Health on media influences on the health risk behaviors of adolescents and the implications for health education.

Gary Banks presented "Michigan Law and Athletic Coaching" at a coaching workshop held at Livonia Stevenson High School. Banks also presented "With a Plan, a Hero; Without a Plan, a Defendant" at the Michigan Recreation and Parks convention in Dearborn.

Jerry Robbins recently conducted the winter concert of the Ypsilanti Community Band. The concert was dedicated to the memory of Erika Anstett, band member and prospective teacher.

Lizbeth Stevens presented a half-day workshop on "Meeting the Challenge: Communication Disorders in Children from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds" for the Oakland County Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Suzanne Hobson and Nelson Maylone recently attended the Michigan Testing Conference in Ann Arbor.

Q.S. Samonte (emeritus) published an article on stereotyping of ethnic minorities in the March issue of Filipinas. Samonte's "A Professional Journey," an autobiographical account, is being published by the University of the Philippines History Project.

HALL OF FAME

The third induction into the EMU Education Alumni Hall of Fame will be held on March 28, starting with a reception to which the public is invited at 4:00 p.m. The reception will be held in the Student Lounge on the second floor of the Porter Building. Unveiling of the photographs of the inductees will occur at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The new members of the Education Alumni Hall of Fame are: the late Frank J. Manley, B.S. 1928; William P. "Bill" Morris, B.S. 1964, M.A. 1968; Robert C. "Bob" Parks, B.S. 1952; the late David E. Smith, M.Phil. 1898; and James A. Wilsford, M.A., 1970.

The Hillsdale County Community Foundation has established a scholarship fund in memory of Beth Ann (Gill) Blanchard, a COE ECE alum who operated the Bridges to Learning Pre-School and Child Care Center in Hillsdale. Blanchard was killed in an automobile accident about three years ago. For information, contact the Community Foundation.

ALUMNI NOTES

Mary Annetta Taylor '56, '65 died recently at age 78. She taught in the Willow Run district and in the Ann Arbor district, from which she retired after a 31-year career.

COE CREDIT HOURS

As of March 12, COE credit hours for Winter stood at 40,040, a 9.41% increase over last Winter. For the fiscal year to date (Summer + Fall + Winter) COE credit hours are 8.53% ahead of the same time last year. This includes a 10.3% increase for Leadership and Counseling, a 9.95% increase for Teacher Education, an 8.74% increase for HPERD, a 7.13% increase for Special Education, and a 5.18% increase for Student Teaching.

TOWNSEND LECTURE

Tony Townsend, an associate professor in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, will lecture on March 19 at EMU. At 11:00 a.m., he will speak on "Globalizing the Curriculum." At 1:00 p.m., the topic will be "Improving School Effectiveness." Both sessions will be held in Room 301B Porter. The public is invited.

Townsend has worked with educators in more than 20 countries, primarily in the areas of strategic planning, accountability, leadership, and community relations. He has published extensively, is a recent president of the International Congress for School Improvement and Effectiveness, and serves on the editorial boards of two international journals.

COE CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE

The annual College of Education Celebration of Excellence, honoring academic achievement of students, will be held on Thursday, March 27, 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the McKenny Union Ballroom. Light refreshments will be served prior to the ceremony.

Nora Martin, professor of Special Education and University Coordinator for the Comer Project, will be the speaker. Entertainment will be provided by the EMU Chamber Choir under the direction of Leonard Riccinto (Music).

Joan Quinlan is the chair of the planning committee, assisted by Sylvia Bethea, Charlene Ford-Chambers, Marjorie Dargo, Limor Gutnick, Carl Isaacs, Win Martin, Sally Rosales, and Heather Shelton, with technical support by Cliff Elston.

MACTE SPRING CONFERENCE

The Spring Conference of the Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education will be held on May 2 at Oakland University. There is no charge to attend and a free box lunch will be provided. All EMU faculty members and students are welcome to attend.

There is an April 18 deadline for a call for presentations for the conference. Presentations should be related to the use of technology in teaching, research, service, and administration. Students are welcome to submit presentations as well. Presentation applications should be sent to jerry.robbins@emich.edu. SHORT NOTES

The COE International Education meeting, regularly scheduled for the 2nd Monday and Tuesday of every month, will be held this month on March 17 and 18 instead in Porter 301B, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Cognos is presenting a free web seminar on "Performance-Driven Education: Delivering on Student Performance Mandates" with presenter Scotty Futrell, CIO of the Gwinnett County (GA) schools. The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education has issued the call for papers for the 2004 annual meeting. Proposals are due by June 2. AACTE has also issued a call for reviewers. COE COUNCIL

The College of Education Council met on March 12 with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding. Upon recommendation of the Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee, the COE Council endorsed revisions to the M.B.A. program, a new M.S. in Clinical Research Administration, new course GERT 517, and new course IHHS 260 and its use in the Social Work program. Various reports were received.

COE IN THE MEDIA

The "above the fold" story in the March 11 issue of "Focus EMU" is on the Hall of Fame. The Eastern Echo recently carried a story about six performers from the dance program, along with two faculty members, who recently performed at the Northeast Regional American College Dance Festival in Buffalo, NY.

HELP NEEDED

Merri McClure, who recently retired after more than 30 years at EMU, the past 11 of which were in the COE, is appealing for help to support a $75,000 stem cell transplant procedure for her son, Kirk A. WALLS GOING UP!

A change in the Porter Building, incorporated in the original design but postponed for cost reasons, is underway. The 3rd floor faculty/staff lounge is being divided into two parts. The east portion will remain as a lounge area. The west portion is becoming work spaces to house the COE's expanding sponsored projects operations.
