COE SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

Monday. Provost Paul Schollaert will speak at noon in Porter 300A/D on EMU's response to conditions associated with the FY04 budget. All COE faculty, staff, and students are invited. Feel free to bring your lunch.

Tuesday. "Coffee with the Dean" will be held from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Porter third floor staff/faculty lounge.

Thursday. COE Celebration of Excellence, honoring academic achievement of students, will be held on March 27, 4:00-5:30 p.m., in the McKenny Union Ballroom. Light refreshments will be served. Nora Martin will be the speaker. Entertainment will be provided by the EMU Chamber Choir under the direction of Leonard Riccinto (Music).

Friday. The induction for the EMU Education Alumni Hall of Fame will be held beginning at 4:00 p.m. on March 28. The reception will be in the Student Lounge of the Porter Building and the public is invited. The 2003 inductees are: the late Frank Manley; William "Bill" Morris; Robert "Bob" Parks; the late David E. Smith; and James A. Wilsford.

Sunday. The 36th Annual HPERD Scholarship Reception will be held 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the McKenny Union Ballroom.

FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Dibya Choudhuri presented "Grief and Death Across Cultures" at the American Counseling Association convention in Anaheim, California this past weekend.

Ethan Lowenstein presented "Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott: Herbert Kohl in Action" at the annual meeting of the National Council for the Social Studies, held in Arizona. Lowenstein recently defended his dissertation, "Teachers Transformed: Exploring the Influence of Facing History and Ourselves on Teachers' Beliefs about Citizenship and Civics Education," at New York University.

Rebecca Martusewicz presented "Convergences: Bateson and Deleuze on Difference, Ethics and Ecology" at the recent EcoJustice and Teacher Education conference at the University of Miami in FL.

At the Comparative and International Education Society meeting in New Orleans, Joe Bishop presented "Democracy Achieved? A Comparison of Secondary Student Definitions of Democracy in the Czech and Slovak Republics." Bishop also served as the chairperson for the session on "Schooling and Social Change: Toward Democratic Reform Through Educational Policies."

Suzanne Hobson has been appointed chair of the Human Rights committee of the American Counseling Association.

Nora Martin spoke on "Inclusion in Comer Schools" at the Developmental Academy held at Yale University.

Joann McNamara's choreography of "Interfuse" was performed recently by EMU dancers at the Northeast Regional American College Dance Festival in Buffalo, NY. McNamara and Sherry Jerome taught at the festival.

At the annual conference of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Lizbeth Stevens held a poster session on "IDEA 97-Resources for Speech Language Pathologists." She also facilitated the "Public School Forum" in her capacity as the MSHA Vice President for Public Schools. John Tonkovich presented "Oral Motor Exercises: Where's the Evidence?"

Suzanne Hobson presided over recent meetings in Lansing to address the codification of the Preliminary Employment Authorization for school counselors.

Ron Williamson and Jerry Robbins were recently recognized in "Newsleader" for 25 or more years of membership in the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Ella Burton participated in the second planning session of the Pinckney schools' school improvement process.

Ethan Lowenstein presented at the University of Michigan's Qualitative Research Forum. His topic was "The Data Reduction Process in Interpretivist/Hermeneutic Research."

Jerry Robbins participated in a meeting last Friday of the Executive Board of the Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, held at Oakland University.

Joe Bishop will be one of the three presenters at the World College Brown Bag Lunch Lecture series on "EMU Scholars' Experiences Teaching Abroad." The event will be held on March 26 in the Tower Room, McKenny Union, at noon. Bishop will speak on his experience in the Czech Republic and in Slovakia.

This Friday, Nancy Copeland, Ellen Hoffman, and Brian Filipiak will be three of the six presenters at the Spring Institute of COATT. The event will be held in the Porter Building. Copeland will present on "The COATT Portfolio Process: Lesson Learned." Hoffman will speak on "Strategies for Meeting the 7th Standard," and Filipiak will talk on "Going Digital."

Jeff Schulz, Christine Karshin, and Kay Woodiel presented "College Student's Behavioral Intentions Relations to Tattooing and Body-Piercing" last Thursday as part of the HPERD seminar series.

On April 15, Chuck Achilles and Jackie Tracy will be among the presenters at an EMU Graduate School research seminar on how to assist graduate students to improve the quality of their research endeavors.

HEALTH EDUCATION CONFERENCE

HPERD hosted the fourth annual MAHPERD Health Conference in the Porter Building on March 15. Kay Woodiel served as chair of the conference planning committee.

Susan McCarthy, with students Kelly Blayer, Suzanne Hansma, and Merisol Herrera, presented "'Smorgasbord' Teaching Approaches Toward Healthier Living."

Christine Karshin, with students Perry Herrick, Meghan Kimball, and Sarah Jedele, presented "Teaching Approaches Toward Healthy Body Image."

Kay Woodiel, with students Kristin Forsyth, Ryan Henderson, Merisol Herrera, Kelly Mongson, Marc Pouliot, and Derek Teft, presented "Service- Learning and Health Education."

Sharon Pendleton presented "Yoga, the Activity for All Our Dimensions."

NODDINGS RESIDENCY

Nel Noddings, 2002-03 holder of the John W. Porter Chair in Urban Education, will be in residency this week. On Monday, she will be meeting with and advising the Cabinet of the Detroit Public Schools and speaking to the EDLD 630 course. On Tuesday, she will be in the Wayne-Westland schools and facilitating a meeting of COE and COAS leaders on increasing collaboration between the two colleges.

Her Wednesday schedule includes meeting with a CURR 304 course, meeting with a special education seminar, meeting with the Porter Chair advisory committee, and individual meetings.

There will be a "Farewell Reception" on Tuesday, March 25, 4:00-5:00 p.m., Porter 301 B/C. The EMU community is cordially invited.

STUDENT NOTES

Doctoral student Katria VanderWoude is running unopposed for the position of president of the Michigan Association for Adult and Continuing Education.

Tiffany Byars recently received a scholarship award from the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Scott Whitehouse and Elizabeth Smith presented ecojustice curriculum units at the recent EcoJustice and Teacher Education conference at the University of Miami in Florida. John Lupinacci and Amanda Phillips also attended the conference.

Meghan Wirick performed a solo at the Northeast Regional American College Dance Festival in Buffalo, New York. Other EMU dancers who performed were Lily Elgincolin, Kristin Frak, Tia Garcia, Amanda Iannitti, Lauren Sabo, and Erin Quellhorst.

Tara Walls and Sarah Freitag held a poster session on service learning projects in augmentative alternative communication at the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association meeting.

ALUMNI NOTES

Catherine L. Steinbach '51, of Dexter, died recently. She taught in one-room schools in Hopson and White Rock. Later she taught in Harbor Beach and Dexter.

SHORT NOTES

The deadline for applications for the MACTE $1,000 scholarship is March 31. For additional information, contact the COE Office of Academic Services. A 3.5 GPA and program completion by June 2003 is required.

COE program information sessions have been held in four locales this month. Sessions are scheduled for tonight in Flint, tomorrow in Livonia, and Thursday in Livingston County.

U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige will speak in Livingston County on Thursday. Tickets are $50. Call Rich Morrissey at 810.632.5408.

MACTE SPRING CONFERENCE

The Spring Conference of the Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education will be held on May 2 at Oakland University. There is no charge to attend and a free box lunch will be provided. All EMU faculty members and students are welcome to attend.

There is an April 18 deadline for a call for presentations for the conference. Presentations should be related to the use of technology in teaching, research, service, and administration. Students are welcome to submit presentations as well. Presentation applications should be sent to jerry.robbins@emich.edu. SHORT NOTES

The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education has issued the call for papers for the 2004 annual meeting. Proposals are due by June 2. AACTE has also issued a call for reviewers.
