RECOGNITIONS OF THE WEEK
At the 26th annual Faculty Awards Ceremony on March 26, Valerie Polakow presented the Scholarly/Creative Activity Award. Sherry Jerome (with Kevin Miller, Music) received the 2002-2003 Artistic Recognition Award for the December 6, 2002 production of "The Fantastic Toy Shop" in Pease Auditorium.
Lidia Lee was recognized for having received a Provost's New Faculty Research Award. Valerie Polakow was recognized for receiving a one-semester sabbatical leave for "Who Cares for the Children? Poverty, Policy and Child Care."
Recognized for receiving a Graduate School Research Support Fund award were: Doug Briggs ("Kinematic and Kinetic Analysis of the Otto Bock Microprocessor-Controlled Knee"); Christine Karshin, Jeffrey Schulz and Kay Woodiel ("Assessment of College Students' Decision Making Related to Tattooing and Body Piercing"), and Margaret Moore-Hart ("Illuminating Diversity Through a Preservice Outreach Project").
Lidia Lee was recognized as an Academic Service-Learning Fellow for Winter 2003. Diversifying the Curriculum Fellows included Joe Bishop ("Multicultural and International Education: Refining a Graduate Course Through Internet Infusion and International Student Inclusion"); Dibya Choudhuri ("Infusing Multicultural Skills Training in Counselor Education"); Marion Dokes-Brown ("The Application of Multicultural Content to a Reading Methods Course"); Toni Jones ("Bringing Together Diversity and Technology"); and Ethan Lowenstein ("Developing an Integrated Multicultural Approach to Teaching Curriculum Methods").
Former recipients of the Ronald W. Collins Distinguished Faculty Awards were recognized. These include: Valerie Polakow, Kathleen Beauvais, Michael Paciorek, Dale Rice, Pat Pokay, Elizabeth Johnson, Lynne Rocklage, the late Marilyn Lake, Nora Martin, Georgea Langer, Mary Bigler, Thomas Gwaltney, and Martha Irwin.
At the Division of Student Affairs "Salute to Excellence" breakfast on March 27, Kay Woodiel received the Gold Medallion (Faculty) Award for her work with the Snow Student Health Center. Irene Ametrano and Elizabeth Broughton received Faculty Appreciation Awards.
Jenny Clark and Don Anderson (Access Services) were awarded $15,300 from the Division of Student Affairs for EMU's eText project for the CATE Lab. This will permit rapid translation into Braille of print materials.
Nora Martin was the keynote speaker for the COE "Celebration of Excellence" convocation last Thursday. Martin was presented with the COE Appreciation Award.
FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES
In national competition, Suzanne Hobson received the First Place Award for Best Leadership Development Program. The award was made at the convention of the American Counseling Association in Anaheim, CA. Hobson has been commissioned by the ACA to write the ACA leadership training book for association leaders.
Hobson also accepted three awards at the ACA convention on behalf of the Michigan Counseling Association, of which she is president. The awards were First Place in both Best Membership Service and Best Membership Recruitment Campaign and Second Place in Best Newsletter.
Suzanne Hobson and Dibya Choudhuri, co-editors of Dimensions in Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice, received the First Place Award for Best Journal in national competition. The award was made at the convention of the American Counseling Association in Anaheim, CA.
Cristina Jose-Kampfner and Shawn Quilter will present "Writing and Storytelling in Mathematics Education: Empowerment for Latino Students" at the convention of the American Educational Research Association. Quilter will also present "Knowing and Experiencing Educational Assessment: A Survey of Inservice Teachers."
Kay Woodiel and Lisa Angermeier-Howard will present "The Coordinated School Health Program as a Framework for Advocacy for LGBT Issues in Health Education" at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance convention in Philadelphia. Woodiel, with Jeff Schulz and Christine Karshin, will present a poster session on "Assessment of College Students' Behavior Status Related to Tattooing."
Last week, Jenny Clark attended the 18th annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities conference in Los Angeles.
Under the leadership of Steve Press, the COE Clinics have sponsored the first two of three sessions for a national audience on Auditory Processing Disorders. Twenty-five persons attended the first session; 36 persons attended the second.
David Anderson, Nelson Maylone and Donald Staub presented "Data-Based Decision Making: Effective Use of Data in the Building and Classroom" at the NCA Midwest Assessment Conference in Lansing.
Don Staub was instrumental in making logistical arrangements for the state "Future Problem Solvers" meeting on campus this past week end. Approximately 800 4th-12th graders from across the state participated. The event has moved to EMU from its traditional UM meeting site. Staub was in Ingham County last Friday for a briefing on the revised "Eisenhower Grants" program.
Jim Berry has been named to the 2002-2004 EMU Academic Calendar Committee. Berry was in Lansing Friday attending a state wide meeting related to the preparation of teachers of vocational-technical education.
Jerry Robbins was in East Lansing on Wednesday attending a meeting called by the State Superintendent concerning substantial revisions of the state Periodic Review/Program Evaluation process.
Deanna Edens, lecturer, Department of Teacher Education, was featured in the "Why I Teach at EMU" article in a recent issue of "Focus EMU."
STUDENT NOTES
Lynne Malinoff received the George Brower Scholarship award for her presentation ("Who's Schools? Culture, Politics, and Conflict: A Study in Educational Adaptation to Social Forces") at this past week's Graduate Research Fair.
Nicole Vitale received a $2,500 award through the University Honors Program Senior Thesis/Project Symposium structure.
EMU students Mary Cacciapalle, Emery Craig, Michael Coyne, Amy Kargul, Jessica McKenna, Robert Murray, Steve Patterson, Amanda Swanson, and Melissa Whicker recently performed a medley of waltz, tango, and swing for an annual "Titanic" Tea held at the Bessie Hoffman Elementary School. After their performance the EMU students taught swing dance to the elementary students.
The local Kappa Delta Pi chapter held an outing to the Ann Arbor Comedy Club. The chapter is collecting nonperishable food, clothing, and same size hygiene items. For National Day of Service, these items will be donated to the SOS shelter in Ypsilanti. There is an April 9 member meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Geddes Town Hall School building.

Many hundreds of COE students were honored last Thursday during the COE Celebration of Excellence Convocation. The names and awards will be announced across several issues of Monday Report. Some of the honorees included:

ALUMNI NOTES
Barbara Jones, corporate relations manager for EMU's Career Services unit, has received several recognitions recently. She is the recipient of the 2003 Athena award from the Ypsilanti Area Chamber of Commerce Women's Council. Last Monday, there was a feature story (including photo) about her in the Ann Arbor News. During this past week's Division of Student Affairs' Salute to Excellence Breakfast, she was awarded the Gold Medallion as "Division Ambassador."
Chloe Charlotte West '32, '63, age 89, died recently. She began her career in a one-room school house in the 1930's. Later, she taught at Farrand Elementary School in Plymouth.
Robert K. Archer '46 died recently in Florida. He was a popular history and social studies teacher at Dearborn High School before taking up the practice of law. He was a founding partner of Archer, Kenney, Wilson, and Cohen in Dearborn and active in many civic organizations.
Yvonne Golusin '73, age 51, of Bloomfield Hills, died recently. She was southeast regional director of the Michigan State Medical Society Alliance and active in many community organizations.
SHORT NOTES
The deadline for applications for the MACTE $1,000 scholarship is today. For additional information, contact COE Office of Academic Services. A 3.5 GPA, program completion by June 2003 required.
The Spring Conference of the Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education will be held on May 2 at Oakland University. There is no charge to attend and a free box lunch will be provided. All EMU faculty members and students are welcome to attend. There is an April 18 deadline for a call for presentations for the conference. Presentations should be related to the use of technology. Students are welcome to submit presentations as well. Presentation applications should be sent to jerry.robbins@emich.edu. For additional information, see the flyer distributed in the COE.
COE COUNCIL MEETING
The College of Education Council met on March 26 with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding. Ellen Hoffman was reelected to the EMU Continuing Education Advisory Council. A new major and minor for "integrated science" at the elementary level were approved, replacing the "science group" major and minor at the elementary level.
State Periodic Review materials were approved for special education areas. Social science folios were tabled and the ESL folio was approved pending editorial additions. The Council approved a proposed new master's program in health education, and a graduate certificate program for school counselor licensure.
Course changes in EDMT 628, EDMT 623, EDMT 653, SOFD 572, SOFD 550, and SOFD 580 were approved. A new "sport management" track was approved for the M.S. in physical education. The proposed LAW 411 was tabled, as was the proposed graduate certificate in health administration. Changes in the M.S. in biology, the proposed new graduate certificate in community building, and the proposed new graduate certificate in nonprofit management were approved. Various reports were received.
