COE AT AERA
Last week's account of the record-breaking degree of participation by COE faculty in the activities of the American Educational Research Association convention was incomplete. In addition to items presented in the previous Monday Report,
Valerie Polakow will present "Rights Denied: Stories of Mothers and Their Children Under the Welfare Regime, 1997-2002." She will chair the session on "Culture, Identity and Resilience in Early Childhood Settings" and she will be a panelist and member of the task force drafting social and environmental justice standards for AERA to be presented at this year's meeting.
Wendy Burke will present "Building a Professional Knowledge Base? Teachers Construct Their Own Professional Development."
FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES
Adjunct lecturer Diane Haslam was in Singapore to organize and conduct a personal trainer course for the Federation of International Sports, Aerobics, and Fitness. While there, she also discussed collaboration possibilities with Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Wendy Burke's " Empowering Beginning Teachers to Analyze Their Student's Learning" has been accepted for inclusion in the Teacher Education Yearbook XII: Research Linking Teacher Preparation and Student Performance.
Cristina Jose-Kampfner (with Lucy Shaw, Academy of the Americas, Detroit Schools) presented "A Story About Latinas in Mathematics" at the recent convention of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics." This was the keynote address for the "Todos Latinos in Mathematics" section.
Judy Williston and Sue Grossman presented "Linking Course Content to the Learning of Appropriate Teaching Practices for Early Childhood Preservice Teachers" at the annual convention of the Association for Childhood Education International in Phoenix. They also attended meetings of the publications committee of the organization.
Regina George's presentation on the EMU Urban Teacher Certification Program has been accepted for the October National Academic Advising conference.
Lecturer Sally Rae was the keynote speaker recently at Central Michigan University for the Phi Eta Kappa physical education fraternity year-end banquet.
This coming Friday, the "Day of Dialogue-Michigan Community Colleges: Partners in Teacher Education" conference will be held at Mott Community College in Flint. Regina George will present "EMU's Urban Teacher Education Program." Jerry Robbins will serve on a panel of five public university persons addressing the question of "Collaboration with Universities: How to Make it Happen."
Nelson Maylone had a letter to the editor published in the April 19 issue of the Detroit Free Press/Detroit News, dealing with "failing schools."
Regina George will be conducting workshops for prospective teachers on how to prepare for the state's Basic Skills tests in Flint on May 28 and in Detroit on May 31. She will be conducting similar workshops on May 17 and 21 for paraprofessionals in the Flint Community Schools.
Bill Shelton will be the speaker for the May 9 dinner meeting and installation of new members of the EMU chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.
Pat Williams-Boyd was featured in the "Why I Teach at EMU" section of the April 15 issue of Focus EMU.
Lynne Rocklage was appointed by Provost Schollaert to the EMU Continuing Education Advisory Board.
Don Staub recently was invited to spend a morning in the office of the superintendent of the Dearborn Heights district to discuss ways the COE could assist teachers in that district to become better informed about a variety of types of assessment. He and Nelson Maylone will return in a few days to continue the discussion.
Eight COE faculty and staff members recently participated in the "Major Decisions" program sponsored by University Housing and the Academic Enhancement Program. The event was held in Eastern Eateries.
STUDENT NOTES
Sharon Raschke will defend her dissertation "Socialization of New School Business Administrators from Outside the Educational Field" on April 30 at 10:00 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C. James Barott is the chair. The public is invited.
Will Hathaway will defend his dissertation "Conflict Management and Leadership in Higher Education: A Case Study of University of Michigan President Robben W. Fleming" on May 7 at 1:00 p.m. in Porter 202. Martha Tack is the chair. The public is invited.
On Tuesday, Pi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi will conclude its National Day of Service project of collecting clothing, nonperishable food items, and sample size personal hygiene products. The items collected will be delivered to SOS in Ypsilanti. That same day (noon to 4:00 p.m.), in the Town Hall School, the chapter will be conducting its "Free Book Fair" and selling KDP personal items.
ALUMNI NOTES
David Parker '80, who prepared to be a teacher of speech, but who has become known professionally as actor Wayne David, lives in Dearborn. He is best known for his role as Jimmer in the play and film Escanaba in da Moonlight, but his voice is familiar as the one selling Ford vehicles for more than 10 years on television. He has been a member of the Purple Rose Theatre Company and is currently on stage at the Meadowbrook Theater starring in Wait Until Dark.
Bruce Jacobs '53, '59 died recently of a heart attack while jogging. He was a retired faculty member at Ferris State University. While at EMU, he was prominent in track events. Later, he officiated at EMU meets.
Tommie Lee McIntyre '67 died recently. He served in the Willow Run schools for 30 years as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and Title I director.
DEVELOPMENT NOTES
The Sherry Loanna Sayles Endowed Scholarship has been created. The scholarship will be for undergraduate students in the COE taking at least six hours, with a GPA of at least 2.5, with preference given to minority students who are single parents or who have overcome economic hardship to attend college.
Sayles joined the EMU faculty in 1987 in the occupational therapy program. Later, she served as a special assistant to the president and as director of community college relations. She was at one time president of the EMU Women's Association and she served as an ACE Fellow. Sayles died on May 12, 2002 at age 53.
SHORT NOTES
Associate Provost Michael Harris has requested that syllabi include certain wording of importance to students on F and J visas. For the wording, see your department head.
COE credit hour production for the fiscal year to date (Summer + Fall + Winter), as of April 10, was 8.53% ahead of the same time last year. This includes a 10.4% increase for L&C, a 10.0% increase for Teacher Education, an 8.7% increase for HPERD, a 7.1% increase for Special Education, and a 5.2% increase for Student Teachers.
Art by students in the EMU Children's Institute will be on display in the Ford Gallery, April 27-30. There will be a reception on Sunday, from noon to 2:00 p.m. Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. A silent auction will be held with proceeds benefitting the Family Scholarship Fund.
The Spring Conference of the Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education will be held on May 2 at Oakland University. There is no charge to attend and a free box lunch will be provided. All EMU faculty members and students are welcome to attend.
The First (Probably Annual) COAS/COE "Celebration of Educational Outreach" event will be held on May 8. If you are a faculty/staff member who works with local-area schools, you are invited to an 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. hotdog picnic at Big Bob's Lakehouse as we celebrate the successes of colleagues in the COE and COAS who share the same passion for improving our local schools through collaboration. Faculty/staff members who are interested in attending should contact Don Staub (donald.staub@emich.edu) so he can estimate the number of hotdogs to buy.May 30 is the deadline to nominate persons for the $3,500 EMU "Institutional Values" Awards. The call for nominations for awards from the Association of Teacher Educators has been issued. Nomination deadlines are at various times, depending on the category, in July.
