EPSTEIN NAMED TO PORTER CHAIR

Joyce L. Epstein has accepted the invitation to serve as the holder of the John W. Porter Chair in Urban Education for 2003-2004. Epstein is internationally known for her work with families. The chair is named in honor of former EMU president John W. Porter.

Her graduate degrees are from Harvard (in human development) and Johns Hopkins (in sociology). She is currently on the faculty at Johns Hopkins, where she is director of the Center on School, Family, and Community Partnerships; director of the National Network of Partnership Schools; director of the Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed at Risk; principal research scientist for the Center for Social Organization of Schools; and professor of sociology.

Epstein holds or has held more than $14 million in grants. Her recent books include (with various coauthors) School, Family, and Community Partnership: Your Handbook for Action (2002); School, Family, and Community Partnerships: Preparing Educators and Improving Schools (2001); and Promising Programs in the Middle Grades (1992). She is the author of hundreds of articles and papers.

The schedule for her residencies will be announced later.

FACULTY ADVISING AWARDS

The COE Advising Office has announced the selection of four faculty members for the 2002-03 Faculty Advising Awards. Presentations will be made at the COE Fall Conference. The recipients are George Barach, Ella Burton, Jodi Johnson, and Olga Nelson.

FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Nelson Maylone's award-winning research on "The Relationship of Socioeconomic Factors and District Scores on the Michigan Education Assessment Program Tests" has been selected by the Great Lakes Center for Education Research and Practice as the second in its series of research publications. The Great Lakes Center supports and disseminates research about K-12 schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Michael Paciorek was instrumental in organizing and conducting the 2003 Champions Cup Sled Hockey tournament. Sled hockey is an international game similar to ice hockey but played by individuals who have physical disabilities. Teams competing were from Norway, Canada, and the Paralympic and World Champion USA team.

Jerry Robbins was the keynote speaker ("Teacher Induction and Pre-Service Teacher Education") at the recent Oakland Schools policy seminar on "Teacher Induction: Why it Matters and What Works."

Rebecca Martusewicz will appear on two panels during the "Revitalizing the Commons: A Forum on Educating for Environmental Justice, Sustainability, and Community" to be held in the Porter Building on May 14. Valerie Polakow and Jeff Schultz will present during another panel.

Professional activities of Joe Bishop, Don Staub, Ella Burton, Charles Achilles and Suzanne Hobson were noted in the April 29 issue of Focus EMU.

The research of Shawn Quilter, Mark Sharp, and Nelson Maylone was presented in abstract in a recent issue of the newsletter of the local chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.

Leah Adams (emeritus) made three presentations at the recent conference of the Association for Childhood Education International in Phoenix. These were: (with Amy Lin Tan, Sacramento CA schools) "Schools and Preschools in the U.S. and the Middle East"; (with Susan Miller of Kutztown University and Anne Eddowes of UAB) "Visiting Schools and Preschools at Home and Abroad"; and (with Pat Kostell of South Carolina) "The U.S. and the Convention on the Rights of the Child."

Leah Adams (emeritus) (with Mei-yung Lam Lam, Swee Eng Lim, and Jung Chen Ma, Hong Kong Institute of Education) is the author of "What Hong Kong Teachers and Parents Think About Thinking," published in the international journal Early Child Development and Care.

ALUMNI NOTES

Ingrid Saunders Jones '73 is senior vice president, corporate external affairs for The Coca-Cola Company and chairperson of The Coca-Cola Foundation. She lives in the Atlanta, GA area.

John J. Case '76 is president of the La-Z-Boy Incorporated Upholstery Group. The company headquarters are in Monroe.

Paul D. White, Sr. '53, died recently. He taught business education at Dundee High School, South Redford High School, and Cleary College before entering the insurance business in 1964.

STUDENT NOTES

Will Hathaway will defend his dissertation "Conflict Management and Leadership in Higher Education: A Case Study of University of Michigan President Robben W. Fleming" on May 7 at 1:00 p.m. in Porter 202. Martha Tack is the chair. The public is invited.

Jefferson Hamlin will defend his dissertation "Teacher Instructions Versus Integrated Learning Systems: A Comparison of Sixth Grade Reading Instruction" on June 4 at 9:30 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C. Helen Ditzhazy is the chair. The public is invited.

Jennifer Murphy, 5th grade teacher in South Lyon and master's student in educational leadership, the recipient of one of the 2002 $25,000 National Educator Award from the Milken Family Foundation, was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News.

Ridhwan Al-Khalli, Fulbright scholar in the COE from Yemen, has arrived in the United States and is enrolled for the Spring term.

Physical education students who assisted with the 2003 Champions Cup Sled Hockey tournament included Rob Bailey, Johnny Borg, Kathleen Callan, Mary Cripps, Lissonn Delcamp, Madonna Emond, Nathan Haag, Peggy Herrick, Rick Hornbaker, Meghan Kimball, Julie Kurdziel, Chuck Molett, Angela Pryor, Michael Rocheleau, Derek Tefft, Kevin Tuite, Danielle Wensing, and Amanda Yeager.

SHORT NOTES

The First (Probably Annual) COAS/COE "Celebration of Educational Outreach" event will be held on May 8. If you are a faculty/staff member who works with local-area schools, you are invited to an 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. hotdog picnic at Big Bob's Lakehouse as we celebrate the successes of colleagues in the COE and COAS who share the same passion for improving our local schools through collaboration. Faculty/staff members who are interested in attending should contact Don Staub (donald.staub@emich.edu) so he can estimate the number of hotdogs to buy.

May 30 is the deadline to nominate persons for the $3,500 EMU "Institutional Values" Awards. Detailed information has been distributed throughout the University community. For additional information, contact Martha Tack at 487.2211.

ATE AWARDS AND PAPERS

The call for nominations for awards from the Association of Teacher Educators has been issued. Nomination deadlines are at various times, depending on the category, in July. Award categories are "distinguished research in teacher education" (contact catsls@Mail1.Hofstra.edu), "distinguished clinician in teacher education" (contact jsnyder@coe.wayne.edu), "distinguished teacher educator" (contact johnm@siu.edu), "distinguished dissertation in teacher education" (contact ckelly@mail.uccs.edu), and "distinguished program in teacher education" (contact jreinhartz@uta.edu).

Proposals for thematic sessions, professional clinics, and research proposals for the 2004 ATE convention are due by June 1. ED TECH ENDORSEMENT APPROVED

Notice has been received from the Michigan Department of Education of approval of EMU's request to offer the new educational technology (NP) endorsement, effective immediately. This is a graduate-level endorsement, available only to previously certified teachers in any field, intended primarily to assist teachers to become highly proficient in the use of technology in their teaching.

CALENDARING INSTRUCTION

EMU's new e-mail system includes a calendaring function. Training in how to use this feature will be offered in Porter 205E on May 9 at 10:00 a.m. The training will be repeated in Porter 205 on May 16 at 2:00 p.m. Any COE administrator, faculty member, or staff member is welcome to participate. However, spaces are limited and reservations must be made through Karen Hansen at 7.1414 (or karen.hansen@emich.edu).

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

The Greasley-Mich Endowed Scholarship has been created. This is "to provide a tuition scholarship(s) to a student(s) who plans to become an elementary or secondary teacher. The scholarship is for a junior or senior undergraduate student(s) and is renewable as long as satisfactory academic progress is made toward the degree."

The scholarship has been established by Judith Greasley Mich and Thomas F. Mich in appreciation of EMU's accessibility to so many first-time-in-the-family college students. Judith Greasley Mich is retired from the Ann Arbor schools where she worked for many years as a substitute teacher and where she still administers SAT, ACT, and AP tests for the district. She is a graduate of Northwestern University. Thomas Mich is a retired vice president of the Pfizer Corporation. He is a graduate of Marquette University and Dartmouth College.

COE CREDIT HOURS

As of April 25, COE credit hours for Spring stood at 10,149, a slight increase over final credit hours for last Spring. The COE is currently 7.62% ahead of final figures for last fiscal year. This includes a 9.85% increase in Teacher Education, a 6.94% increase in Leadership and Counseling, a 6.84% increase in HPERD, a 5.94% increase in Special Education, and a 5.12% increase in Student Teaching.
