COE CREDIT HOURS REACH AN ALL-TIME HIGH

As of May 2, COE credit hours for the fiscal year (Summer 2002 through Spring 2003) stood at an all-time high--95,749--with more Spring 2003 credit hours yet to be posted. The previous high was set in 1990-91, when COE credit hours reached 91,986. COE credit hours then declined during much of the decade of the '90's, "bottoming out" during 1995-96.

This year's growth represents an 8% increase over last year, which in turn was 6.3% above that of the year before. There has been greater than 25% growth in COE credit hours over the past four years.

This year's growth over last year, to date, includes a 10.33% increase in Teacher Education, a 7.92% increase in Leadership and Counseling, a 7.05% increase in Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, a 6.04% increase in Special Education, and a 5.17% increase in Student Teaching.

As of May 2, Spring term COE credit hours were 3.45% ahead of final credit hours for last Spring. This includes a 12.5% increase in Teacher Education.

FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Karen Carney is the coauthor of Get Ready for School: Family-Centered Activities to Promote Early Literacy and Appropriate Behavior, published by Southwest Institute, Tempe, AZ.

Valerie Polakow is the author of the chapter on "Homeless Children in the Post-Welfare Era" in Invisible Children (ed. by S. Books, Lawrence Erlbaum).

Kay Woodiel's article on "High-Tech Gear Integrates Diverse Format Presentations" will appear in the June issue of Syllabus Technology for Higher Education.

Valerie Polakow gave the keynote address on "Poverty, Policy and the Lived Worlds of Children" at the conference of the Center for Urban Educators in New York. She also conducted a seminar on qualitative research and advocacy for the faculty of the School of Education at Long Island University.

Karen Carney presented on an early intervention/prevention program for children with emotional impairments to the spring conference of the Michigan Association of Teachers for Emotionally Disturbed Children at Boyne Mountain.

Gary Navarre, Mike Beebe, Karen Carney, and Joe Coyner presented on the status and regulations for special education programs for emotionally disturbed children at the Michigan Association of Teachers of Emotionally Disturbed Children at Boyne Mountain.

Nelson Maylone recently addressed the Ann Arbor Area Gray Panthers on the subject of "No Child Left Behind." He is scheduled to speak on the same subject as the keynoter for the Michigan Public Education Task Force in Southfield on June 2.

John Tonkovich recently attended the quarterly meeting of the Professional Advisory Board of the Visiting Nurse Association of Southeast Michigan in Oak Park.

The research of Jeff Schulz, with colleagues Christine Karshin and Kay Woodiel, on tattoos, piercing, and other body art was reported in depth, with photographs, recently in the Ann Arbor News.

Leah Adams (emeritus) recently was in Chicago participating in two days of board meetings of the U.S. National Committee of the World Organization for Early Childhood Education.

ALUMNI NOTES

Patricia E. Strum '75 is the president of Westwood Management Associates, LLC, a part of the Westwood Group of Muskegon. She has more than 20 years experience in the areas of retail management and property marketing.

Debra E. Whitehead '79 is a CTAT organizational consultant and trainer, operating out of Denver, CO. She began her career as a special educator in both public and private schools. She then worked in residential environments for people with disabilities. She formerly owned her own consulting business.

Viola M. Mueller, age 96, died recently. She attended MSNC in the 1920's and later taught physical education in Detroit.

Byron E. Weed II '61, '64 died recently. Prepared as an industrial arts teacher, he spent the bulk of his career in the real estate business.

STUDENT NOTES

Jefferson Hamlin will defend his dissertation "Teacher Instructions Versus Integrated Learning Systems: A Comparison of Sixth Grade Reading Instruction" on June 4 at 9:30 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C. Helen Ditzhazy is the chair. The public is invited.

SPONSORED PROJECTS

As of the end of April, COE faculty and staff members had received 13 awards amounting to $1,193,871. During the same period of time, 24 proposals were submitted in the amount of $15,246,526.

Stephen McGregor received $15,500 from Biotest Laboratories for "Analysis of Androst-1-ene Isomers in Food." In this study, "analysis will be done of lab and swine, fat and liver tissues for the presence of the delta 1 isomers of androst-1-ene-3, 17-dione, androst-1-ene-3_, 17_-diol and androst-1-ene-17_-ol, 3-one."

SHORT NOTES

May 30 is the deadline to nominate persons for the $3,500 EMU "Institutional Values" Awards. Detailed information has been distributed throughout the University community. For additional information, contact Martha Tack at 487.2211.

A new articulation agreement between Washtenaw Community College and EMU provides for smooth transfer between WCC's new A.A. in elementary education and new A.A. in secondary education and EMU's teacher preparation programs.

Approval has been received, effective Winter 2004, for a new concentration in sports management in the M.S. in physical education.

CALENDARING INSTRUCTION

EMU's new e-mail system includes a calendaring function. Training in how to use this feature will be offered in Porter 205E on May 16 at 2:00 p.m. Any COE administrator, faculty member, or staff member is welcome to participate. However, spaces are limited and reservations must be made through Karen Hansen at 7.1414 (or karen.hansen@emich.edu).

ATE AWARDS AND PAPERS

The call for nominations for awards from the Association of Teacher Educators has been issued. Nomination deadlines are at various times, depending on the category, in July. Award categories are "distinguished research in teacher education" (contact catsls@Mail1.Hofstra.edu), "distinguished clinician in teacher education" (contact jsnyder@coe.wayne.edu), "distinguished teacher educator" (contact johnm@siu.edu), "distinguished dissertation in teacher education" (contact ckelly@mail.uccs.edu), and "distinguished program in teacher education" (contact jreinhartz@uta.edu).

Proposals for thematic sessions, professional clinics, and research proposals for the 2004 ATE convention are due by June 1.
