FITNESS CHAMPS

The team of Brett Pedersen and Chris Roberson constitutes the 2003 ACIC National Fitness Champions.  Pedersen and Roberson, the winners of the local competition, were recently in Orlando, FL for the national event.  Events included the dualathon (run/bike), tug-of-war, speed sled, and an obstacle course.

The American Collegiate Intramural Championships is sponsored by the Target corporation, in association with the Disney corporation

FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Jim Berry is in Kiev, Ukraine presenting an invited paper at the International Conference on Innovation in Higher Education.

Jerry Robbins will be in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, one of six witnesses invited to appear before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on  21st Century Competitiveness (a.k.a. the higher education subcommittee).  Robbins will present a case study of EMU as a large, comprehensive, and quality institution for the preparation of professional educators, especially teachers.

Sue Grossman's article "Reflecting on Play in the Past: Making it Personal" is in the Summer issue of "Focus on Teacher Education," a newsletter of the Association of Childhood Education International.

Lidia Lee and Lizbeth Stevens were in Lansing recently promoting two licensure bills--for audiologists and for speech language pathologists--under consideration by the Legislature.

Thomas Gwaltney, a former Fulbright Scholar, recently participated in "Michigan and the World: A Foreign Policy Town Meeting" session, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, held in Dearborn.

Lizbeth Stevens participated in a workshop on "Communication for Learning in School" held recently in Livonia for the Wayne County Speech Language Hearing Association.

At the statewide One-Room Schoolhouse Conference, held on May 10 in the Porter Building, Jerry Robbins and dean emeritus Scott Westerman brought greetings.  Thomas Gwaltney served on a panel on "Historical Perspectives of the One-Room School," conducted a spelling bee challenge, and showed and conducted a discussion around the video "A Clean Slate."

MR was pleased to hear recently from former COE dean Allen Myers, who continues with his hobby (for the 64th year) of playing the French horn.

ALUMNI NOTES

Richard G. Telfer '48 is the author of a recent article in Michigan History on "Pioneer Nuclear Educators."  Telfer lives in Las Vegas, NV and remains active as a consultant on nuclear-related issues.

Dale E. Bartch '67 is the founder of a wholesale air conditioning company in Florida.  In recent times he has served by gubernatorial appointment as a member of the governing board of Lake Sumpter Community College.

Gary L. Sullenger '73 is the president of Baker College of Port Huron.

STUDENT NOTES

Jefferson Hamlin will defend his dissertation "Teacher Instructions Versus Integrated Learning Systems: A Comparison of Sixth Grade Reading Instruction" on June 4 at 9:30 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C.  Helen Ditzhazy is the chair.  The public is invited.

Lynn Malinoff received the George Brower Scholarship, awarded by Phi Delta Kappa, at the conclusion of the EMU Graduate Research Fair.  The award is made to the COE graduate student who receives the highest marks for an oral or poster presentation.  Her topic was "Whose Schools? Culture, Politics and Conflict: A Study in Educational Adaptation to Social Forces."

"Bottom of the Barrel?"  No way!  Among the top five percent of the graduates of area high schools this Spring are these persons, all of whom are planning to come to EMU to become teachers:

Tara Fairclough, Huron High School, whose interests are in art and music; Krista Nicole Pancone, Belleville High School, elementary education; Jennifer K. Woodard, Howell High School, elementary education, Spanish; Jennifer A. SPONSORED PROJECTS

Don Staub (as codirector with Raouf Hanna, Economics, director) has received $49,020 from the International Research and Exchange Board for "Freedom Support Act Undergraduate Program IREX 2003-2004."  This project is year two of the FSAU Undergraduate Fellowship program.  Eastern will be receiving four students from the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union including one from each of the following countries:

Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, and Russia.

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

A recent EMU Foundation supplement to Focus EMU noted that four of the top ten cash gift categories from the Faculty/Staff/Emeritus campaign were to accounts in the College of EducationShaftone Dunklin, a student in Leadership and Counseling, was featured as the recipient of the Larry and Janice Warren Endowed Scholarship.  Jackie Tracy was featured in the "I Give to EMU Because . . . " column.

The Development staff of the EMU Foundation recently spent 478 person-hours calling COE alums.  The list of prospects included 19,280 persons, to whom 30,907 calls were made.  Of these, 24,559 were "incomplete" (no answer, answering machine, etc.).  Of the 6,348 "complete" calls, there were conversations with 3,561 COE alums.  Of these, 660 persons made a definite financial pledge and another 273 made an indefinite pledge to the EMU COE.

SHORT NOTES

May 30 is the deadline to nominate persons for the $3,500 EMU "Institutional Values" Awards.  Detailed information has been distributed throughout the University community.  For additional information, contact Martha Tack at 487.2211.

ATE AWARDS AND PAPERS

The call for nominations for awards from the Association of Teacher Educators has been issued.  Nomination deadlines are at various times, depending on the category, in July.  Award categories are "distinguished research in teacher education" (contact catsls@Mail1.Hofstra.edu), "distinguished clinician in teacher education" (contact jsnyder@coe.wayne.edu), "distinguished teacher educator" (contact johnm@siu.edu), "distinguished dissertation in teacher education" (contact ckelly@mail.uccs.edu), and "distinguished program in teacher education" (contact jreinhartz@uta.edu).

COE COUNCIL

The College of Education Council met on May 14 with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding.

The proposed EDLD 601 Grantwriting and Fundraising for College and School Professionals remained tabled and the proposed EDPS 660 Grantwriting was tabled in order to permit the two departments to propose a single, cross listed course.

The Council endorsed a proposed revision in the Master of Public Administration program by the creation of a new concentration in Nonprofit Management, endorsed seven new graduate certificates in public affairs, and endorsed a revision in the M.A. in Spanish Bilingual-Bicultural Education by abolishing an unused track. 

The Council also endorsed proposed new courses AAS 370 Films of the African American Experience, AAS 402 African American Studies Internship Seminar, and ESLN 515 Graduate ESL Seminar in Academic Communication.

Various reports were received, including one from the dean related to the governance of professional education preparation programs at EMU.
