FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES
Nora Martin (with F. Haynes-Scott) is the author of Effective Team-Building Activities for Pumpkin and/or Sweet Potato Pie Lovers, published by Robbie Dean Press, Ann Arbor.
Elizabeth Broughton, Suzanne Hobson, and Ron Williamson presented "Building Collaboration Between School Counselors and Administrators" at the American School Counselor Association conference in St. Louis.
Lizbeth Stevens recently attended the second National Summit on the Shared Implementation of IDEA '97, held in Arlington, VA. Stevens has served as a leader in the ASPIIRE-ILLIAD partnership arrangements. However, it is unclear whether support for these activities will continue under new federal legislation.
Later this week, Jerry Robbins will be in Denver, CO attending the annual AACTE Summer Leadership Conference. Robbins has begun his 3rd non-consecutive term as president of the Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE). Robbins will also attend meetings of the executive board of the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities (TECSCU) while in Denver.
STUDENT NOTES
Daniel J. Jonker will defend his dissertation "The Effect of MEAP Preparation on Students--Opportunity to Learn" on July 14 at 8:00 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C. David Anderson is the chair. The public is invited.
David J. Maile will defend his dissertation "An Investigation of Formative Evaluation Practices for Teacher Evaluation in Selected School Districts in the State of Michigan" on July 14 at 10:00 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C. William Price is the chair. The public is invited.
ALUMNI NOTES
John E. Hagel '78 is the superintendent of the Shiawassee Regional Service District in Corunna, MI.
Pat Messing '83 is leaving her position as principal of Hillcrest Elementary School in the Crestwood District to become principal of Winchester Elementary School in Northville. She has worked in the Crestwood District for 28 years, teaching at Kinloch and Highview Elementary schools and at Riverside Middle School. She also served as a counselor at Riverside.
Maurice Pope, the first completer of EMU's Urban Teacher Program in Detroit, currently principal of the Detroit Academy for the Arts, has completed his studies and defended his dissertation for the Ed.D. at Wayne State University. Cynthia Overton, also from the first cohort in the Urban Teacher Program, is ABD at the University of Michigan.
SPONSORED PROJECTS
For the fiscal year just ended, COE faculty/staff members submitted 37 proposals in the amount of $23.1 million. There were 16 awards made, in the amount of $1,406,842.
SHORT NOTES
The COE Office of Collaborative Education has submitted forms to all COE faculty/staff members requesting information for the "Outside the Classroom" resource publication. The deadline for responding is September 12.
The call for nominations for awards from the Association of Teacher Educators has been issued. Nomination deadlines are at various times, depending on the category, in July.
Award categories remaining are "distinguished clinician in teacher education" (contact jsnyder@coe.wayne.edu), "distinguished teacher educator" (contact johnm@siu.edu), "distinguished dissertation in teacher education" (contact ckelly@mail.uccs.edu), and "distinguished program in teacher education" (contact jreinhartz@uta.edu).
