FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

John Tonkovich has been selected to serve on a review panel for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation. The panel is charged with awarding funding for research proposals from graduate students in speech-language pathology and audiology programs.

Tonkovich also recently served as a medical rehabilitation surveyor at the V.A. Medical Center in San Juan, P.R. for CARF International, a rehabilitation accreditation organization.

Jim Berry is in Arizona, attending the annual meeting of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration.

Ethan Lowenstein co-facilitated an intergenerational discussion at the Unitarian Church in Detroit on "Freedom Schooling." The discussion was sponsored by Detroit Summer, an organization that involves youth in community revitalization.

ALUMNI NOTES

Kerry W. Keating '58 is the CEO of Mitchellance, Inc., a Portsmouth, OH manufacturer of shoe products. Keating received an EMU Alumni Achievement Award in 1987.

Thomas M. Grundner '67 is the owner of Marietta Golf Products of Cleveland, OH and Tucson, AZ. In 1988 he received an EMU Alumnus Achievement Award.

Bill Blakemore '75 is the new athletic director at Huron High School in Ann Arbor. In the late 1970's, he was the athletic director at Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor. He then moved to Florida to teach and coach. For approximately the past 20 years, he has been the athletic director at Lely High School in Naples, FL.

Clara M. Gale, age 97, died recently in Saline. She attended The Normal and taught for 13 years in the Ann Arbor and Saline areas.

Paul Cummings '63, '72 died recently in Plymouth. His entire career was spent in the Plymouth-Canton schools as a teacher and coach. He served from 1985 to 1997 as the district's athletic director.

COE COUNCIL

The College of Education Council met on July 30, with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding.

Robert Van Der Velde was a guest, discussing various matters related to academic human resources.

The COE Council approved, pending editorial changes proposed by the Basic Programs Committee, folios for submission to the Michigan Department of Education. In addition, upon recommendation of the Basic Programs Committee, the COE Council approved changes in the ESSC program.

The COE Council approved a change in the prerequisites for RDNG 310. A report was received from the dean concerning progress toward the NCATE Institutional Report and exhibits. The next meeting will be September 10.

SHORT NOTES

AERA has extended the proposal submission deadline to 11:59 p.m. on August 8.

The COE Fall Conference at Eagle Crest on Tuesday, September 2 will begin at 8:00 a.m. with coffee and registration. The general session will begin at 8:30 a.m. Between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m., the EMU Office of Public Information will have a photographer present to make "head shots" of COE faculty members.
