FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Jerry Robbins represented EMU at a brunch held last Saturday at the Ypsilanti District Library.  The event was sponsored by Allen Francois, a staff member of Congressman John Dingell.  Francois plans a fund-raising campaign for a scholarship in memory of his grandmother.

SHORT NOTES

The COE Fall Conference at Eagle Crest on Tuesday, September 2 will begin at 8:00 a.m. with coffee and registration.  The general session will begin at 8:30 a.m.  Between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m., the EMU Office of Public Information will have a photographer present to make "head shots" of COE faculty members.  A new video tape will be shown and Provost Schollaert will speak.

SPA APPROVAL FOR ELEMENTARY

Approval has been received from the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) for EMU's programming to prepare elementary teachers at the initial level.

In addition to the ACEI approval for elementary, national association approval has been received from ITEA/CTTE (technology and design education), ISTE (computer science, advanced program in educational technology/media), CEC (initial and advanced programs in emotionally impaired, hearing impaired, cognitively impaired, physically or otherwise health impaired, speech-language pathology [which is also accredited by ASHA]; advanced programs in administration/supervision of special education programs, curriculum development in special education), and AAHPERD/NASPE (advanced program in physical education).

Programs in music education and school counselor education are accredited by separate agencies (NASM and CACREP, respectively), but recognized by NCATE.  Our accreditation in music education is valid until 2008 and our accreditation in school counseling is valid until 2005.

Because of "special arrangements" between the relevant SPA and the Michigan Department of Education, our continued national approval in several teaching fields will come with state approval in the same field. These fields include English (NCTE), mathematics (NCTM), and middle level education (NMSA).

Responses to our rejoinders  for the advanced early childhood education (NAEYC) program, the advanced program in reading (IRA), and the programs in educational leadership (ELCC) have not yet been received.

We do not hold approval for national recognition by the  relevant SPA (specialized professional association) in biology, chemistry, earth science, physics (NSTA); or in economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and social studies (NCSS).

SPA's approved as part of the NCATE structure cover many, but not all, teaching and other professional education fields.
