STUDENT NOTES

Nigina Avganova, from Tajikistan, and Zarema Suleymanova, from the Ukraine, will be students in the College of Education this year.  They are part of a U.S. Department of State-sponsored program to get undergraduates from the New Independent States to spend a year on a U.S. campus.  Although they will not be part of any formal COE program, they will be taking four COE courses in Fall and four courses in Winter.  In addition, they will conduct a community service project in the Fall and an internship at a local school in the Winter.  Mary Rearick and Nelson Maylone, respectively, will serve as their faculty advisors.

Nan Asher, a facilities maintenance worker in McKenny Union, who is hearing impaired but holds a masters degree, is working on secondary teacher certification.  She was featured recently in the "Why I Work at EMU" section of Focus EMU.

COE CREDIT HOURS

As of August 12, COE credit hours for Fall were 1.47% above final credit hours for last Fall's record-breaking high.  This includes a 7.26% increase in Teacher Education and a 1.63% increase for HPERD.  For the fiscal year to date, we are 2.35% ahead of final figures for this time last year.

SPONSORED PROJECTS

PROPOSED ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE

Provost Paul Schollaert has proposed that "the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation [sic] shall move to the College of Health and Human Services. . . . intact. . . ."

Provost Schollaert has requested formal input on this (and other proposals affecting CHHS, but not COE) from "the appropriate committee" in HPERD and from the COE Council by September 12.
