HPERD TO MOVE TO CHHS

The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance will move organizationally to the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), effective July 1, 2004, according to an October 6 announcement by Provost Paul Schollaert.

Several other organizational changes affecting CHHS will take effect on the same day. In announcing the changes, Schollaert said that the new academic organization "will meet the needs of large numbers of faculty, while creating a climate in which the collegiate structure of the University can be strengthened."

HPERD traces its roots to lectures and course work offered from the 1850's onward and its history as a department to 1894 when the "Department of Physical Training" was created. In 1903, the name was changed to "Department of Physical Education." Over the years, the name gradually changed to "Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics," the nomenclature in 1960 when the department became one of five organizational units brought together to form the College of Education.
