The article on "Bullying: A Perennial School Problem," by Ella Burton and Helen Ditzhazy, recently published in the Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin, will be reprinted and made available to school board members in Nebraska and Wisconsin.
Eboni Zamani presented "A Quarter Century of Trends in The Review of Higher Education" at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education in Portland, OR.
Lizbeth Stevens is the president-elect of the Michigan Speech-Language Hearing Association and will serve as president in 2005 when the convention will be held in Ypsilanti. Lidia Lee is a member-at-large of the Board of the organization.
Eboni Zamani and doctoral fellow Shaftone Dunklin presented "Examining Experiences with Multiculturalism and Stance on Affirmative Action" in a poster session at the annual KCP Fellows conference in Lansing.
Ella Burton was the university partner for the Pinckney Community Schools District Resource Team. A recent activity was at Country Elementary School in Pinckney. The process involves mentoring principals and assisting newly appointed principals with the work of staff development and school improvement.
Jim Berry recently served on the Academic Calendar Committee.
A memorial for Kathleen Kootsillas will be held on January 13 in Porter 202 at 4:00 p.m. Kootsillas, 58, had been employed at EMU since 1986 and she was a senior secretary in the COE Clinics. She died on December 1 of complications from surgery. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Shore Animal League or the Salvation Army. Envelopes will be available at the memorial service, or contributions may be left with Norma Taylor-Bishop, Pat Sullivan, or Sylvia Bethea. The EMU community is invited to the event. STUDENT NOTES
Durwood Lee Murphy, 39, died on October 3. A master's degree student at the time of his death, he had taught for the Detroit schools for 12 years. He also coached basketball for three years for the Cadillac Cougars.
Honors Program Senior
Thesis/Project Awards and Workshop.
Junior and senior departmental honors students are invited to apply for
the University Honors Program Senior Thesis/Project and Symposium award.
Although the number and amount of the monetary awards have not yet been
determined, it is expected
to fund between 10 - 20 students at
Women's Commission Scholarship. The 2004-2005 EMU Women's Commission Scholarship application is now available at the Office of Financial Aid, 403 Pierce Hall. This application is for both undergraduate and graduate students who have had an interruption in their education of at least five cumulative years and/or are planning a career that is generally non-traditional for their gender. The deadline for a completed application is Friday, February 13. Call 487-0455.
Undergraduate Symposium. Students with outstanding undergraduate research and creative projects are being sought to give presentations at Symposium XXIV, scheduled Friday, March 26, McKenny Union. Nomination forms and abstract guidelines may be obtained through departments, the College of Arts and Sciences (411 Pray-Harrold), or the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts (124 Quirk). ALUMNI NOTES
The
Office for Alumni Relations is currently accepting nominations
for the 43rd Annual Alumni Awards. There are
four award categories: Outstanding Young Alumnus/Alumna; Alumnus/Alumna
Achievement; Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna; and the Dr. John W. Porter
Distinguished Service Award. The deadline for nominations is January 16. Awards
will be presented at a dinner ceremony May 8, at the Ypsilanti Marriott at

Barbara Balbach '66 was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News. Balbach is a former president of the Ann Arbor Thrift Shop and still a major volunteer at the agency. She is also involved in many other community organizations. Her degrees are in special education.
Tom Wall '71, '73, '76, retired special education teacher in the Willow Run schools and current operator of a driver education school, was named a Finalist in the annual Ann Arbor News "Citizen of the Year" competition. Among many other civic contributions, he is the prime organizer of the annual T-Wall B-Ball/The Carnival for Special Athletes event held every October.
George A. Rose '73 is president and CEO of The Portsmouth Group, Inc. in Washington, D.C. This organization has recently launched an innovative Internet navigation tool that provides an on-line safety net of health and human services and assistive programs. This is known as "iSafetyNet.US."
Cynthia L. Warger '75 is principal of Warger, Eavy & Associates, a communications firm in Reston, VA that specializes in education print and media. She has taught at both the K-12 and university levels and is a past president of the International Council for Children with Behavior Disorders. While editor of Teaching Exceptional Children, she won national EdPress awards. She is a co-author of several books and videos, including ones on safe schools and working with children with emotional and behavioral challenges.
William ("Bill") Lynn '78 describes his company (located in Inkster) and himself on the company web site in this way: "Simtech Publications is a very small company. In fact, if Bill quits we have no company left at all. We shouldn't even be using the word 'we' but it makes us sound big and important. By day, Bill (that's me) is a mild-mannered Speech Language Pathologist working in the field of Assistive Technology." Simtech produces educational materials for young children.
Jeffrey Morgan '82 is superintendent of the Kearsley schools. Kearsley, with two other districts, has a "Consortium for Professional Development." This project won one of the "Michigan's Best" Education Excellence awards made by the Michigan Association of School Boards, which carried a $1,000 prize.
Ann Beriault (Ann J. York-Beriault) '84, is the management supervisor of Indianapolis-based Young & Laramore. Young & Laramore is a full-service, major advertising and marketing company.
APPROVAL RECEIVED
The Michigan Department of Education has approved EMU's request to offer a new major and minor in reading, applicable toward certification as an elementary teacher. The major and minor were approved through the EMU input system some months ago. The certification code is "BT."
DANCE CONCERT
"FastForward," a dance concert of modern, hip-hop, ballet, and jazz, with choreography by EMU dance faculty and local choreographers, will be presented in Quirk Theatre on January 16 and 17 at 8:00 p.m. and on January 18 at 2:00 p.m.
EMU dancers and alumna will perform Sherry Jerome's ballet choreography for "Coppelia," Joann McNamara's contemporary premiere "Oscillation," and Julianne O'Brien Pedersen's modern premiere "Mind Full." Other pieces scheduled will include a light-hearted classic jazz piece to an array of Ella Fitzgerald songs, a contemporary work for 10 dancers to the driving music of Arnold Dreyblatt, and a hip hop piece finale.

COE WEB SITE IS BUSY!
During the past year, the main page of the COE web site was "hit" on average about 7,000 times per month. Peak usage included the months of March, September, and April, when "hits" exceeded 8,000 per month. Lowest levels of usage were in January and July.
