FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Nelson Maylone is the author of “TestThink” in the current issue of the Phi Delta Kappan.

Judy Williston and Sue Grossman have published “Teaching in Troubled Times, Under Difficult Conditions” in Childhood Education.

William J. Price’s article, “New Age Principals,” appeared in the January 7 issue of Education Week, pp. 36-37.

Lisa Delpit, former holder of the John Porter Chair in Urban Education, is the author of “Educators as ‘Seed People’ Growing a New Future” in a recent issue of Educational Researcher.  The paper is the text of the AERA 2003 Dewitt Wallace-Reader’s Digest Distinguished Lecture.

“The Impact of Reflection on Teacher Immediacy and Clarity in the College Classroom” by Sarah Ginsberg has been accepted for the AAHE “Learning to Change” conference in San Diego, March 31-April 1.

Joe Bishop has been named to the editorial review board for the International Journal of Whole Schooling.  Bishop also serves as the local contact person for the organization.

Eboni Zamani will serve as a panelist on the topic of “White Privilege, Then and Now” during the  observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 19.

Cristina Jose-Kampfner will serve as a panelist on March 2 on the subject of “Mothering: Research, Practice, and Meaning.”  The event is part of the Women’s History month observances.

Jack Minzey, emeritus, received the President’s Award during the National Community Education Association convention held last month in New Orleans.  This award is made to the person who is viewed by the president of NCEA as the individual who has made the most significant contribution to him/her in her/his career.  Minzey was also inducted as a charter member of the NCEA Hall of Fame during the conference.

A memorial for Kathleen Kootsillas will be held on January 13 in Porter 202 at 4:00 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to the North Shore Animal League or the Salvation Army.  Envelopes will be available at the memorial service, or contributions may be left with Norma Taylor-Bishop, Pat Sullivan, or Sylvia Bethea.  The EMU community is invited to the event.  For additional information, contact Steve Press at 487.4410.

STUDENT NOTES

Madonna Emond, a special education major/physical education minor, was featured in a recently released film, “Haley and Madonna.”  The film details the special relationship between Emond, the current Miss Michigan and Miss American finalist, and Haley Crabtree, a young girl with cerebral palsy.  The film includes many scenes from the Porter Building and elsewhere on the EMU campus and it includes an interview with Michael Paciorek.

Honors Program Senior Thesis/Project Awards and Workshop.   Junior and senior departmental honors students are invited to apply for the University Honors Program Senior Thesis/Project and Symposium award. Although the number and amount of the monetary awards have not yet been determined, it  is  expected  to  fund  between 10 - 20 students at approximately $2,000 each. Completed applications must be received in the University Honors office (2nd floor of Wise Hall) no later than 4:00 p.m. Friday, January 16.  Call 487-0341, or e-mail Joe Rankin at jrankin@emich.edu

A student-oriented e-portfolio workshop will be held on January 17, sponsored by COATT, on January 17, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Porter 205-D.  Participation is free and lunch is provided.   For additional information, bfilipiak@emich.edu.

The Physical Education Organization will sponsor a workshop conducted by Carol Ann Cook, the National Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year, on February 13, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Women’s Commission Scholarship.  The 2004-2005 EMU Women's Commission Scholarship application is now available at the Office of Financial Aid, 403 Pierce Hall.  This application is for both undergraduate and graduate students who have had an interruption in their education of at least five cumulative years and/or are planning a career that is generally non-traditional for their gender. The deadline for a completed application is Friday, February 13. Call 487-0455.

Friends of the Rouge seeks college students to assist with the Rouge Education Project.  The commitment includes a training session on March 13, another training session on March 27, and work with elementary/middle/high school students on May 5 in assessing water quality of the Rouge RiverFor information, Christina Bartoli at 313.792.9626 or ascoordinator@therouge.org.  See also www.therouge.org.

Undergraduate Symposium.  Students with outstanding undergraduate research and creative projects are being sought to give presentations at Symposium XXIV, scheduled Friday, March 26,  McKenny Union. ALUMNI NOTES

The Office for Alumni Relations is currently accepting nominations for the 43rd Annual Alumni Awards. There are four award categories: Outstanding Young Alumnus/Alumna; Alumnus/Alumna Achieve-ment; Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna; and the Dr. John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award. The deadline for nominations is January 16. Awards will be presented at a dinner ceremony May 8, at the Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest. The EMU Alumni Office has determined that 105 (approximately 18%) of the superintendents of Michigan school districts hold at least one degree from Eastern Michigan University.  Plans are being made for a group photo at the MASA convention.

APPROVALS RECEIVED

Notice has been received from NCATE of the approval for national recognition by the International Reading Association of EMU’s master’s program in Reading.

The Michigan Department of Education has approved EMU’s graduate programs in director of special education and supervisor of special education.

DANCE CONCERT

“FastForward,” a dance concert of modern, hip-hop, ballet, and jazz, with choreography by EMU dance faculty and local choreographers, will be presented in Quirk Theatre on January 16 and 17 at 8:00 p.m. and on January 18 at 2:00 p.m.

EMU dancers and alumna will perform  Sherry Jerome’s ballet choreography for  “Coppelia,” Joann McNamara’s contemporary premiere “Oscillation,” and Julianne O’Brien Pedersen’s modern premiere “Mind Full.”  Other pieces scheduled will include a light-hearted classic jazz piece to an array of Ella Fitzgerald songs, a contemporary work for 10 dancers to the driving music of Arnold Dreyblatt, and a hip hop piece finale.

SPONSORED PROJECTS

Through the end of December, COE faculty members had received $1,742,273 in sponsored project awards.  This amount is greater than any ever received for a full year, with two exceptions, so the prospects are good for a record-breaking year in this respect. 

Nine awards have been received to date this fiscal year.  The eight proposals submitted to date request a total of $13,917,615.

SHORT NOTES

Academic Programs Abroad.  With an application deadline of January 15, EMU students have a choice of five short-term (February 21-29), inexpensive (under $1,000, not including airfare and EMU tuition and fees) study opportunities.  These include “Art in Mexico City” (credit in art available), “Power, Place and Image in Florence and Rome” (credit in European history available), and “Cultural Geography in Puerto Rico” (cultural geography credit available), “Literature in London” (credit in introductory literature available), and “Hospitality Management in London” (hotel and restaurant management credit available).  For information, see http://www.emich.edu/abroad

The SINO-American Education Consortium, of which the EMU COE is a member, has announced the Summer Education Trip, May 31-June 15, to the People’s Republic of China in connection with the 15th SINO-American Education Consortium International Conference in Wuhan, China.  For additional information, contract Binyao Zheng at bzheng@Kennesaw.edu or Ann Smith at asmith@kennesaw.edu.

NCATE now offers 10 online training modules on Standards and procedures.  These are open to all faculty members.  They can be accessed from NCATE’s homepage, www.ncate.org, under the “News” section.
