Jerry Robbins was in Washington, D.C. this past Wednesday and Thursday, attending meetings of an NCATE task force on specialized professional organizations.
"Performance-Based Assessment: The Case of Two Children," by Martha Baiyee (with Stephanie Boling) has been accepted for presentation at the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters convention, to be held in March at GVSU.
The graduate certificate program in orthotics/prosthetics was featured in the January 20 issue of Focus EMU, along with a photo that included Doug Briggs and graduate assistant Frank Fedel.
Nelson Maylone was quoted in recent articles that appeared in the Detroit News and in the Petoskey News-Register. The former was about MEAP testing; the latter about a school policy that exempts students from taking exams.
Georgea Langer was honored by the EMU Alumni Association as the recipient of one of seven awards for "teaching excellence." COE faculty members who won this award in previous years were recognized as well: Peggy Moore-Hart, Leah Adams, Thomas Gwaltney, Mary Bigler, Michael Paciorek,
Dale Rice, Lou Thayer, Jane Goodman, Larry Bemish, Beth Johnson, Nora Martin, Judy Williston, Olga Nelson, Rob Kreger, and Marylyn Lake.
Eboni Zamani served on the steering committee for the MLK Day events at EMU. Norma Taylor-Bishop, chair, and Nora Martin served on the luncheon committee. The printed program took note of the Lee and Nora Martin scholarship, awarded to a student in the Ypsilanti schools.
ALUMNI NOTES
Shannon Smith '99, a science teacher in the Willow Run district, was featured recently in a story in the Ann Arbor News.
- - - - - - - - - William Rosen '65, who taught special education for 25 years in the Detroit schools, died recently in Royal Oak. He also taught driver education.

Application materials for the $1000 MACTE scholarship are available in the COE Office of Academic Services. Three from EMU will be selected to participate in the state wide competition. The major criteria are a 3.5 GPA and expect to complete program by June 2004.
The Hillsdale County Community Foundation offers a scholarship for a student in early childhood education. This scholarship is in memory of Beth Ann (Gill) Blanchard, an EMU alum who was killed in a car accident three years ago. For information and an application form, contact the Foundation at P.O. APPROVAL RECEIVED
Notice has been received from NCATE of the approval for national recognition by the Educational Leadership Constituent Council of EMU's masters and specialist degree programs in educational leadership. (ELCC does not review doctoral programs in educational leadership.)
