FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Jerry Robbins has been invited to give one of the plenary session addresses, on the topic of "Best Practices Toward Quality Teacher Education," at the Third International Conference on Teacher Education, to be held at the University of the Philippines June 30-July 2.

"What Research Tells Us About Teacher Work Samples," by Pat Pokay, Ana Harten, Barbara Gorenflo, Martha Baiyee, and Mary Rearick, has been selected for presentation at this week's meeting of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) in Chicago.

Jerry Robbins will be attending meetings of the AACTE Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities (TECSCU). He will also represent EMU at a meeting of The Renaissance Group. All these will be held during the AACTE convention in Chicago. During the AACTE meeting, the EMU COE (in conjunction with the Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education) will host a reception for alumni and friends who are attending the AACTE convention. A large delegation of COE personnel will also attend the convention.

Ron Williamson recently co-chaired the semi-annual meeting of the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform.

Michael Bretting will be in Orlando, FL this week attending the Academic Chairpersons Conference sponsored by the IDEA Institute of Kansas State University.

Georgea Langer, along with other recipients of the Teaching Excellence Award, was featured in the January 27 issue of Focus EMU.

Provost Schollaert has appointed Lynne Rocklage and Michael Bretting to the Faculty committee of the Budget Planning Committees. Jerry Robbins will serve on the Steering Committee and as chair of the Administrative Unit Reorganization committee. Jeff Armstrong is also a member of the latter committee.

Ruth E. Riggs '26, '44, age 97, died recently in Chelsea. She taught for two years in Romulus and for 40 years in the Van Buren district.

Edith Mae Pinter '64, '67, age 78, died recently in Ann Arbor. She taught at the elementary level in Ypsilanti for 23 years.

STUDENT NOTES

Application materials for the $1000 MACTE scholarship are available in the COE Office of Academic Services. Three from EMU will be selected to participate in the state wide competition. The major criteria are a 3.5 GPA and expect to complete program by June 2004.

The Hillsdale County Community Foundation offers a scholarship for a student in early childhood education. This scholarship is in memory of Beth Ann (Gill) Blanchard, an EMU alum who was killed in a car accident three years ago. For information and an application form, contact the Foundation at P.O. Pi Tau Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority offers a scholarship for a junior or senior student intending to become a teacher. The Anglin/Burks Memorial Scholarship is for $2,000. Applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and must include a set of transcripts, a letter of recommendation, and a recent photograph. The application deadline is April 1. COE WEB SITE

"Hits" on the main page of the COE web site increased from 4,687 in January 2003 to 9,139 in January 2004, a 95% increase in a year's time. In fact, the January "hits" were the highest monthly total ever, passing the 8,303 of last March.

In recent times, the main page has been receiving about 220 hits per day. Other popular pages are Teacher Education (72 hits/day) and the COE Office of Academic Services (50 hits/day). The COE phone directory gets an average of 13 hits per day.

COE CREDIT HOURS

For Summer 03, COE credit hour production (7,902) was 10.75% higher than for Summer 02 (7,135). Based on unofficial figures, the COE credit hour production for Fall 03 (41,376) was 8.52% higher than for Fall 02 (38,127).

For the fiscal year to date (Summer + Fall), our credit hours are approximately 8.9% above that for the same period of time last year. We are all but assured that this year's total will exceed 100,000 credit hours for the year for the first time ever, thus breaking another all-time record high.

Comparable figures by department are not yet available.

COE COUNCIL

The COE Council met on January 28, with Ellen Hoffman presiding in the absence of the chair.

Upon recommendation of the Basic Programs Committee, the Council approved a change of prerequisites for MATH 108 and the proposed new course ECON 303 Consumer Economics.

Upon recommendation of the Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee, the Council approved a revision in INDT 341 Advanced Ground Instruction and a new INDT 342 Commercial Ground Instruction; revisions in the Finance major, including a new FIN 360 Theory of Financial Decisions; and proposed new courses FRNH 450 and FRNH 550, both named French Civilization in Film.

The Council adopted a resolution of appreciation for the work of Gloria Neve, long time chair of the COE Personnel Committee, who is retiring after this year.

As an item of new business, the Council approved a proposal to change the name of CHEM 101 from "Science for Elementary Teachers" to "Chemistry for Elementary Teachers."

Numerous reports were received. Under "new business," there was a lengthy discussion of proposed changes in the governance structure for professional education at EMU. No action was taken.
