EMU WELL REPRESENTED AT AACTE
EMU had one of the largest delegations present at and participating in the recent convention of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) and related organizations, held recently in Chicago.
Jerry Robbins participated in two days of meetings of the AACTE Board of Directors, during which he was recognized for concluding his third term of service on the Board. He then participated in meetings of the Board of Directors of the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities, (TECSCU) during which he was recognized for concluding his current term on the board and for being an original member of the Board when the organization was founded in 1977-78.
As the president of the Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE) Robbins participated in meetings of the Advisory Council of State Representatives (ACSR). Robbins also presided over a meeting of the education deans of The Renaissance Group and served as host for the EMU/MACTE reception. In addition, he represented EMU and participated in a meeting of the Council of the Great City Colleges of Education. Robbins was also recognized for his work as a member of NCATE's Task Force on SPA's.

Margerum-Leys also served as a judge in the selection of AACTE's Outstanding Dissertation Award.

FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES
John Palladino's review of "The Southwest Airlines Way: Using the Power of Relationships to Achieve High Performance" (by J.H. Gittell) is scheduled to appear soon in the Journal of Women in Educational Leadership.
Sue Grossman and Judy Williston recently attended the Publications meeting of the Association for Childhood Education International in Bethesda, MD.
Ellen Hoffman presented "Addressing Proficiencies Across the Curriculum" at a state wide meeting on the "Seventh Standard" (technology) of the Michigan Standards for Entry-Level Teachers. Those attending from EMU included Alane Starko, Toni Stokes Jones, Nancy Copeland, and Kathy Brandon.
Beth Johnson presented "Radical Assessment Makeovers: From Paper to Performance-Based Pedagogy" for PreK-12 educators in the Grand Traverse Area Catholic schools. For custodians and secretaries, Johnson presented "Servant Leadership."
Johnson also presented "Using Pop Culture as a Pedagogical Tool to Teach to the Michigan Standards and Benchmarks" to faculty members at Davison Elementary School; "Extreme Teaching for Extreme Times" for urban teachers from Detroit and Flint; and "Using Pop Culture to Reach and Teach ESL and LEP Students" for educators in the Warren school district.
Marina McCormack, members of the Bonisteel Computer Lab staff, and Linda Lewis-White presented a two-day workshop for K-8 teachers of the Lincoln school district. On the first day, McCormack and the lab staff presented the use of different technology integration software. On the second day, Lewis-White presented a prototype lesson and several "best practice" lessons on African-American literacy.
John Palladino has received one of six awards made campus-wide for 2004 Spring-Summer Research. He will study "How School Administrators Collaborate with Homeless Mothers on Behalf of Youth with Emotional Disabilities." Palladino also holds one of six Awards for New Faculty to study "Collaborating on Behalf of Adolescent Youth with Behavior Disabilities Residing in Foster Care: Implications for Transitional Services."
The Winter 2004 issue of EMU's Exemplar magazine pays tribute to Akosua Slough who, at the time she received the "Institutional Values Award" in the "Continuous Improvement, Innovation and/or Customer Service" category, was a secretary in the COE Office of Academic Services.
Marv Johnson recently celebrated 42 years of service to EMU and Sharon VanRyte celebrated 20.
Leah Adams, emeritus, has been appointed a reviewer for the UNESCO Child Development Briefs in the Early Childhood and Inclusive Education Sector of UNESCO. The briefs are available at www.unesco.org/education/ecf/briefs.
Agnes L. Rogers, associate professor emeritus of special education and occupational therapy, died on October 16, 2003. She was living in North Palm Beach, FL. Rogers worked at EMU from 1955 to 1972.
ALUMNI NOTES
A recent issue of Focus EMU took note of alum Bradford Bush being named as EMU assistant football coach.
The recent issue of EMU's Exemplar magazine profiles William and Delores ('52) Brehm's gift of $200,000 to the College of Education. Another article in the magazine is by Theo Hamilton '55.
- - - - - - - - Vallateen Virginia Dudley Abbington '30, age 96, died recently. She had an 18-year teaching career in North Carolina and Kentucky, before changing to the social work profession, which she practiced in St. Louis. She achieved prominence in civil rights activities, helping to integrate public housing and to win equal pay for black teachers.
Eva-Deane Elwell '32, age 91, died recently. She taught in Roscommon, Capac, and Saginaw and for many summers on the piano faculty at Interlochen.
Helen Allison Jones Heidamos '48 died recently. She taught business subjects at Milan High School and at Cleary College.Ronald William Egnor '64 died recently. His career was spent in the Ypsilanti area where he was a prominent civil rights and personal injury attorney.
STUDENT NOTES
Eddie Conner was selected from among 31 student applicants to be EMU "President for a Day."
As Conner was performing presidential duties, Samuel Kirkpatrick was attending Conner's classes, which included RDNG 311 and EDMT 330. In the four years of operation, "President for a Day" has included two future teachers (or administrators?).
Presidential scholar Shana Baber was featured recently in Focus EMU. Baber plans to become a speech language pathologist. Presidential scholars get a four-year scholarship that covers tuition, housing, food, and fees.
Geoffrey Williams, a student teacher at Huron High School, was injured in an I-94 crash that has earned Trooper Shun Green commendations for heroism.
Application materials for the $1000 MACTE scholarship are available in the COE Office of Academic Services. Three from EMU will be selected to participate in the state wide competition. The major criteria are a 3.5 GPA and expect to complete program by June 2004.

As of the end of January, COE faculty and staff had received 10 awards in the amount of $1,848,551 during this fiscal year. This is a 67% increase over the same time last year. Proposals in the amount of $14 million have been submitted this fiscal year.
