FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Kathleen Conley, national president of Eta Sigma Gamma, presided over the annual board of directors meeting, held at Ball State University February 19-21. Conley and Susan McCarthy represented Eta Sigma Gamma at the 7th annual Health Education Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C. this past weekend. Eta Sigma Gamma is the national professional health education honorary.

Ian Haslam has been selected for inclusion in the eighth edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Kay Woodiel presented "The Coordinated School Health Movement: Solutions for Health and Social Problems in Schools" and "Bullying in Schools: Ways for the Health Educator and the Counselor to Work Together to Improve School Climate" at the February 27 meeting of the Association of Michigan School Counselors, held at Oakland College.

Jerry Robbins conducted a concert of the Ypsilanti Community Band at WCC on February 26.

Dibya Choudhuri and Christine Karshin have been named as recipients of a 2003/2004 Josephine Nevins Keal Professional Development Fellowship. The recognition carries with it a cash award for research.

Sylvia Bethea has been selected for participation in the first cohort of Management EMU.

STUDENT NOTES

Madonna Emond, the current Miss Michigan, is featured in a documentary film with 14-year-old Haley Crabtree of Saginaw. Crabtree has cerebral palsy. The 107 minute movie will be shown seven times in March on the local community access television channel (17). Emond and Crabtree were featured in an article about the movie that appeared over the weekend in the Ann Arbor News.

Application materials for the $1000 MACTE scholarship are available in the COE Office of Academic Services. Three from EMU will be selected to participate in the state wide competition. The major criteria are a 3.5 GPA and expect to complete program by June 2004. The award will be presented on April 2 at the MACTE Spring conference, to be held at the Kellogg Center at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Nominations/applications for the Ronald W. And Gerri Collins medals for Excellence in Graduate Assistantship are due to the Graduate School by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 5. For additional information, see the Graduate School web site under graduate student services/financial aid.

The US - China Education and Culture Exchange Center is sponsoring the TESL Summer 2004 trip. Americans travel to China to teach English as Second Language to Chinese elementary, middle, and high school students for several weeks. The cost of the program is $490-$640 ($250 for certified teachers), with Chinese institutions covering transportation, meals, housing, etc. For additional information, see www.uschinaedu.org.

Events for Pi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi for the next few weeks include hosting the regional cluster meeting (March 16), the winter initiation (March 28), Commencement flower sale (April 25), a pizza sale, and a book drive.

A total of 1,030 COE students was named to the Dean's List for Fall 2003. This includes 719 students from Teacher Education, 188 students from Special Education, and 123 students from HPERD.

Registering for co-requisite classes for Spring and Summer must be handled in a special way. Students planning to register for FETE 201, 301, 302, 401, 402; EDPS 322, 340; CURR 304, 305; RDNG 310 must do this in a certain sequence. For information, see your advisor.

ALUMNI NOTES

Dean Rockwell '35 is the author of Antique Knife Rests. The book is about the history, manufacture, and use of American, English, and continental knife rests in metal, glass, and ceramic. For information, 734.663.4214. Rockwell is also organizing an effort to find an authentic wood stove for the Geddes Town Hall School building on campus.

John DiBiaggio '54, '85, member of the EMU Education Alumni Hall of Fame and former president of Michigan State University and Tufts University, has been named by the University of Colorado to help the school determine whether its embattled athletic department has a culture that encourages mistreatment of women.

James A. Wilsford '70, member of the EMU Education Alumni Hall of Fame, is the author of a software program entitled "Phonics Too." For information, see www.phonicstoo.com.

Sandra Harris '74, '80, '97, interim superintendent of the Lincoln schools, is under consideration for the superintendency position in that district.

John Wilkins '84, is director of bands at Detroit's Mumford High School. He is also director of the University of Michigan Alumni Pep Band. In this capacity, he was featured in a front-page story in the February 23 issue of the Ann Arbor News.

Harry A. Graichen '32, aged 94, died recently in Traverse City. He taught chemistry, physics, mathematics, and astronomy in the Dansville and Trenton districts and at Albion College and at EMU. After his teaching career, he worked as a buyer for Fingerle Lumber Company in Ann Arbor.

Joseph Zawadzki '64, '64, age 67, died recently in Canton. He was a secondary mathematics teacher and wrestling coach in South Redford for 28 years. After retirement, he operated several retail sports apparel stores.

Karen Bogotski Cortis, age 54, of Milford, died recently. She was educational director of the Dorsey Schools, which teach business courses to post-secondary students with locations in Madison Heights, Wayne, Roseville, and Southgate.

SHORT NOTES

The EMU Women's Association program for March 3 (noon to 1:30 p.m., Halle 300) features Gary Evans (CTA) on "Cross Cultural Communications."

The Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Spring Conference will be held at the Kellogg Center, Michigan State University, on April 2. The topic is "Poverty and Achievement." Because of our institutional membership, all EMU faculty members are welcome to attend at no expense, although pre-registration is required for the free lunch.

In a year's time, the COE home page was "hit" about 95,000 times! Most page counters have recently "crashed."

INITIAL PROGRAM ADMISSIONS

Based on admissions through January 2004, admissions to the EMU initial teacher preparation program are estimated to reach 1,522 for this fiscal year-an all-time high.

Projections are that almost 400 men will be admitted-also an all-time high-and the number of students of color admitted will be 181-also an all-time high. The projected number of prospective elementary teachers-684-will also be an all-time high.

Among the high-demand fields, initial program admissions in chemistry, earth/space science, French, mathematics, and physics are all at relatively high levels.
