FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Middle Grades Education: A Reference Handbook, edited by Pat Williams-Boyd, has been released by ABC-CLIO. Seventeen EMU graduate students contributed chapters and sections to the book.

Pat Williams-Boyd's chapter, "Using Case Studies," has been published in Valerie Janesick's Stretching Exercises for Qualitative Researchers (Sage, 2nd edition). Case studies prepared by EMU graduate students appear in the book as examples.

Ethan Lowenstein's "The Rosa Parks 'Myth': A Third Grade History Investigation" appeared in a recent issue of Social Studies and the Young Learner.

Suzanne Hobson is the lead author of "Tenure and School Counselors: The Impact of P.A. 288," featured in a recent issue of School Counselor Connections.

Helen Ditzhazy was a reviewer for Standards for the Principalship (Corwin Press), by Elaine Wilmore.

Jerry Robbins represented EMU at Friday's meeting in Lansing of the Michigan (Education) Deans Council.

Ella Burton, Jackie Tracy, William Price, Yvonne Callaway, Deborah Harmon, Georgea Langer, Olga Nelson, Irene Allen, Regina George, Wendy Burke, Jon Margerum-Leys, Murali Nair, and Joe Coyner are participating in the College of Education Information Sessions sponsored by Continuing Education at the EMU regional centers this month.

Vic Chiasson is working with the Ypsilanti Recreation Commission to conduct a survey and to raise funds for recreation programming in the city. Chiasson's work was reported in a recent issue of the Ann Arbor News.

Jerry Robbins presented "How to Fix the Schools" last Thursday at the Ann Arbor "Learning in Retirement" session.

Cristina Jose-Kampfner has been awarded a full-year sabbatical for 2004-2005, subject to approval by the EMU Board of Regents. She will study "Sí, Se Puede-It Can Be Done: Advancing Adolescent Latinas in Mathematics." This award is one of nine two-semester awards on campus and one of 16 total.

Yvonne Callaway will receive one of the Faculty Appreciation Awards to be presented at the Founder's Day "Salute to Excellence" breakfast sponsored by the EMU Division of Student Affairs.

Steven McGregor presented "Is Exercise Good or Bad for Your Muscles? Cellular Processes in Exercise-Induced Muscle Injury and Regeneration" last week in the EMU Department of Biology Seminar series.

Sherry Jerome will present a lecture/demonstration on the ballet Coppelia on March 16 in Warner 106, under the auspices of the local observance of Women's History Month. The public is invited.

Dibya Choudhuri will be presenting at Pease Auditorium at "Colors in Harmony," March 20, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Dibya Choudhuri will present an information seminar for students considering a doctorate in counseling on March 13, 5:30 p.m.

Jason Hall, student worker in the dean's office, has been selected to be one of the "University Ambassadors" for next year.

STUDENT NOTES

Three graduate students in Pat Williams-Boyd's middle level education class have their entire interdisciplinary unit, created as a class assignment, included in Valerie Janesick's Curriculum Trends (ABC-CLIO).

Randall Morris will defend his dissertation "The Teacher Perceiver Interview: An Assessment by Students and Administrators" on March 25 at 1:00 p.m. in Porter 301 B/C. Chuck Achilles is the chair. The public is invited.

Events for Pi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi for the next few weeks include hosting the regional cluster meeting (March 16), the winter initiation (March 28), Commencement flower sale (April 25), a pizza sale, and a book drive.

Registering for co-requisite classes for Spring and Summer must be handled in a special way. Students planning to register for FETE 201, 301, 302, 401, 402; EDPS 322, 340; CURR 304, 305; RDNG 310 must do this in a certain sequence. For information, see your advisor.

COE CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE

The annual COE Celebration of Excellence ceremony to honor academic achievements of students, will be held on March 25, 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the McKenny Union Ballroom.

Kenneth Burnley, CEO of the Detroit Schools, will be the speaker. Entertainment will be by the EMU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Donald Babcock. Jerry Robbins will serve as master of ceremonies.

Among the students to be honored will be those in the COE with high grade point averages, COE students in the Honors Program, scholarship recipients, those nominated for the Student Teacher of the Year competition, various program area "students of the year," masters and specialist program scholars, doctoral graduates, Kappa Delta Pi officers and initiates, and Phi Delta Kappa officers.

Carl Isaacs is chair of the planning committee, assisted by Sylvia Bethea, Ronald Callison, Tiffany Cogdell, Winifred Martin, Joan Quinlan, Susan Rink, Heather Shelton, and Cliff Elston. Light refreshments will be served prior to and during the ceremony. Honorees and their guests are cordially invited.

EDUCATION ALUMNI HALL OF FAME

The Education Alumni Hall of Fame event will be held on Friday, March 19, in and near the student lounge in the Porter Building, starting at 4:00 p.m. At the discretion of the supervisor, COE offices may close at 4:00 p.m. so that staff may participate.

Honorees are: Barbara Forker '42, Bert Greene '55, Theo Hamilton '55, Nora Martin '63 '65, Ron Oestrike '54, and Lloyd Olds (1892-1982) '16.

ALUMNI NOTES

The six alums being inducted this year into the Education Alumni Hall of Fame were featured in the March 9 issue of "Focus EMU."

Among the attendees at an EMU alumni event in Florida were Mr. and Mrs. Larry ('56, 57) Cunningham, the parents of the Ball State University Athletic Director. Mrs. Cunningham is the daughter of Frank Manley, a member of the Education Alumni Hall of Fame. Former faculty member (and fellow Hall of Famer) Bob Parks also attended the event.

Joe Nuzzo '70, a technology education teacher at Lincoln High School, was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News. Nuzzo recently won the International Technology Education Association's 2004 award for program excellence.

Terrel LeCesne '73, executive director of operations and labor relations for the Ypsilanti schools, will retire from that position at the end of this year.

Mike Flanagan '74, executive director of the Michigan Association of School Administrators, was featured in the March 2004 issue of The School Administrator.

Phil Booth, a special education teacher at Holt High School, was featured in the March 12 issue of the Lansing State Journal. Booth and his colleagues organized the second annual Student Transition Conference to help kids who haven't considered college get the feel of the Lansing Community College campus.

David Little, whose death was noted in last week's Monday Report, was a former EMU "Physical Education Major of the Year."

COE COUNCIL

The COE Council met on March 10 with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding. Upon the recommendation of the Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee, the Council endorsed new courses INDT 345 Industrial Direct Response, INDT 346 Industrial Climate, and INDT 448 Wholesale Policy and Distribution.

Provost Schollaert was a guest. The agenda was adjusted to consider a proposal to award current post-baccalaureate students a bachelor's degree. A motion was made not to support this proposal but to instead support a formal certificate for these program completers. After considerable discussion, the motion failed unanimously. A motion was made to support the original proposal and it passed unanimously.

Various reports were received and announcements made.

The Shiawassee County School Districts' Best Practice Fair will be held on March 24, 1:00-4:00 p.m., Owosso High School gymnasium, 765 East North Street, Owosso. EMU personnel are cordially invited.

The Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Spring Conference will be held at the Kellogg Center, Michigan State University, on April 2, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p. m. The topic is "Poverty and Achievement." The keynote speaker is Kati Haycock, director of The Education Trust of Washington, D.C. Other speakers include Nelson Maylone and Valerie Polakow. Because of our institutional membership, all EMU faculty members are welcome to attend at no expense, although pre-registration is required for the free lunch; contact teneycka@gvsu.edu.
